Let's make our easy fill hanging baskets
0:03
for our strawberries. Welcome to
0:05
Gardening with Ben. And in today's
0:07
video, we're going to be using these
0:08
easy fill hanging baskets from Oakland
0:11
Gardens Limited and filling them with
0:14
strawberries. Now, we've got 300
0:16
strawberry plants cuz we've got 20 of
0:18
these to fill. And I'm going to have
0:20
them in my poly tunnel hung up from
0:22
these bars at the middle of the poly
0:25
tunnel and grow them indoors. Now we've
0:27
gone for a everbearing
0:31
strawberry. So fingers crossed they
0:32
should fruit all the way through summer.
0:36
That is the plan anyway. Hopefully they
0:38
do. As long as we keep taking the
0:40
runners off, they'll keep fruiting all
0:42
the way through summer. So let's get on
0:45
and let's crack on with filling these
0:46
hanging baskets and getting absolutely
0:49
loads of strawberries. this. Now, we've
0:52
ordered the strawberries as dry root
0:55
runners, and yeah, as you can see,
0:57
they're just roots. They're not covered
0:58
in soil or anything like that. So, what
1:00
you need to do when you get these is you
1:02
need to soak them for about an hour to
1:04
two hours. So, that it wakes them up,
1:06
gives them a drink of water before
1:08
planting them in the hanging bucket. So,
1:11
let's leave these to soak for an hour
1:13
before planting them up. So, we put them
1:16
to soak in some water for an hour or so.
1:20
Let them drink, let them wake up, and
1:22
then we'll get them planted into the
1:27
So, we've left them to soak for an hour,
1:29
and yeah, they're picking up. They're
1:30
waking up now. So, now is the time to
1:33
get them planted in the hanging baskets.
1:35
All 300 of them. Absolutely loads. But
1:38
we're going to be on data with
1:39
strawberries. And hopefully they'll be
1:43
Complete a easy filled basket. So, first
1:45
off, we need to put these clips in,
1:48
which are easy enough. You just slot
1:52
like so. Nice and easy.
1:57
Obviously, if the bigger plants, you put
1:59
your plants in first and then you put
2:16
As you can see, there's space for 12
2:18
plants. We'll also be putting a couple
2:20
in top if we've got any spare left over.
2:26
We've obviously got 20 of these to do.
2:34
So, that's 15 plants per planter.
2:39
First off, then you need your strawberry
2:41
plants, which help some of that soaking.
2:54
And what I do, I'm getting the bigger
2:58
is we'll put four around the bottom
3:14
Then we cover them ones with compost.
3:30
Need to make sure they secured in. We
3:34
don't want them falling out.
3:39
So, there we have it. Our first basket
3:41
is complete. So, yeah. Just make sure
3:44
that strawberries are in well and
3:47
fastened in good. We don't want them
4:05
That's one thing that we don't want them
4:06
doing. We don't want them all falling
4:11
We need them to take root pretty well.
4:16
So, obviously the last job is just to
4:19
water them. We'll water them all at the
4:34
And there we have it. That's that one
4:35
done. Like I said, we'll probably put
4:36
some in the top, but we will wait until
4:40
we've done them all. See how many we've
4:42
got left and if we can do it or not. So,
4:44
next up is just get the chain in, which
4:47
is an easy job as well. Just pop that in
5:17
And then obviously it needs a good
5:18
water. So we'll put that into place for
5:21
time being and do rest of them.
5:24
And there we have it. We've got them all
5:26
up now and they all look absolutely
5:30
fantastic. Come summer time and all the
5:32
strawberries are growing. Obviously,
5:34
we've got the strawberries popping out
5:35
of the sides, nice and secure. So, yeah,
5:39
keep them watered and hopefully they'll
5:42
grow really well in here. And they
5:44
should be ready earlier than the ones
5:46
outside because it'll be warmer and
5:48
hotter. So, we'll have to keep them
5:49
watered well. We're going to set up
5:51
irrigation as well to keep them watered
5:54
well and to look after them. So, yeah, a
5:57
job well done. We've got some to put in
5:59
the top still. We've still got a lot
6:01
left over, so we're going to put some in
6:03
the top, but we'll do that next week.
6:05
That's a job for next week. Now, we've
6:07
absolutely smashed it today. Absolutely
6:12
So, every week we'll post an update on
6:14
how well the strawberries are doing. So
6:15
you can keep along and see how well
6:17
they're growing here in the poly tunnel
6:19
island, how well they bear the fruit
6:20
this year, and hopefully get a good crop
6:23
from them. So make sure you drop us a
6:24
follow to stay up to date with all our
6:26
videos and how well they're getting on.
6:28
Until next time everyone, remember, keep
6:30
smiling, keep shining, and keep
