Welcome to the Poly Tunnel Diaries
0:02
episode three. If you've not been
0:05
watching along, make sure you go and
0:06
check out the other Poly Tunnel videos.
0:08
And every week we're showing you how
0:10
it's progressing in here as this is the
0:13
first time I've fully properly grown in
0:15
the Polyon. I've grown in the past grown
0:17
tomatoes and peppers and chilies and
0:19
allergy, but I've never used it to its
0:22
full potential. Now, this year we gave
0:24
it a massive revamp. We cleared it all
0:27
out. We redug it over. We put new
0:30
flooring down and we have got raised
0:32
beds in here as well and we're going to
0:35
use it to its full potential and we're
0:36
going to grow all year round in it.
0:38
Fingers crossed. That is the plan. We're
0:40
going to be starting off in March with
0:42
sewing in here and then sewing all the
0:45
way through the year and hopefully
0:46
growing all the way through the year as
0:48
well in winter as well. So, it's going
0:50
to be a learning journey for me because
0:52
I've never grown anything through the
0:53
winter apart from onions and garlics.
0:56
So, we're going to give it a try and see
0:58
how well we get on. Whether it's a
1:00
failure, I don't know. Whether it's a
1:02
success, hopefully. But we'll share all
1:05
the journey along with you. And I'll
1:06
show you the honest bits as well,
1:08
whether something fails cuz I'm an
1:10
honest gardener. So, let's have a look
1:12
and let's see how it's looking.
1:14
So, these are the Oakland hanging
1:17
baskets which we have got. We got all
1:19
these hanging baskets from Oakland
1:21
Gardens and these are absolutely
1:23
brilliant. They've got about 15 plants
1:25
in each one. Probably put too many
1:27
plants in, but oh well. We're going to
1:29
give it a try and see how well they get
1:31
on. Now, these are everbearing
1:33
strawberries where they'll fruit all
1:36
summer. As long as you keep pinching out
1:38
the runners, they should keep fruiting.
1:41
So, hopefully we'll get an abundance of
1:43
strawberries in the poly tunnel. And as
1:46
you can see, after being planted for 3
1:48
weeks, they are coming along. They're
1:50
growing. They're taking root. and
1:53
they're showing signs of new life. So,
1:55
that is an absolute bonus. It's going to
1:58
be a warm week this week. Temperatures
2:00
topping 16°, so it could get up to
2:03
around 20° in the poly tunnel. So, we've
2:06
given them a good watering today so that
2:08
they can hopefully take root and get
2:12
growing because these will probably be
2:14
earlier than the ones outside for fruing
2:17
as it will be warmer in here and yeah,
2:20
better conditions for growing in. So,
2:24
those are the strawberries. Absolutely
2:26
amazing.
2:28
Not much happening with all the raised
2:30
beds at the moment. We got all these
2:31
raised beds off Amazon. Absolutely
2:34
brilliant. easy to put together and they
2:36
look absolutely great. So, we're going
2:39
to be filling these with compost. As you
2:41
can see, I've started getting all the
2:42
compost for them all, which is a big
2:45
job, but once they're all filled, it'll
2:47
be perfect. Obviously, we'll have to
2:49
keep feeding the compost year on year
2:51
because obviously all the nutrients will
2:53
get out of them. But, I had quite a few
2:55
comments saying that I shouldn't have
2:57
black membrane on the floor. I am going
2:59
to cut the hole in the bottom for the
3:02
worms to get through and for them to
3:04
drain easier. So, we will be cutting
3:06
that, but obviously we want it down on
3:08
the paths and everything like that. So,
3:10
we will be cutting the membrane. But
3:13
yeah, I'm excited. We're going to be
3:14
having tomatoes along that back bit and
3:17
then we'll have some peppers in. We'll
3:19
have different vegetables in like
3:21
lettuce, beetroot, spring onions,
3:25
carrots, and we're going to have some
3:27
cucumbers in. So, we're going to have a
3:30
lot of good plants in here. So,
3:32
hopefully we'll have a good summer crop
3:34
in here and might possibly try broccoli
3:37
and cauliflowers in here as well and see
3:39
how well they get on and see if they're
3:41
any good. Let me know in the comments if
3:43
anybody else grows in the poly tunnel
3:45
and what sort of produce they grow
3:47
because I would like some ideas from
3:49
people as well. So yeah, it's going to
3:52
be an exciting year in the poly tunnel.
3:54
Next weekend hopefully I might start
3:56
taking all the compost out of the bags
3:58
and filling the raised beds up, getting
3:59
that job done because come March time,
4:01
I'm going to start sewing in here and
4:04
hopefully get some vegetables started
4:06
off growing like my beetroot, my
4:08
lettuce. So yeah, fingers crossed we get
4:11
some done down here.
4:15
So make sure you come back next week for
4:17
episode four. See how well we're getting
4:20
on and hopefully have all these raised
4:21
beds filled with compost. That's the
4:23
plan for next weekend. So it's going to
4:25
be a busy weekend next weekend. And then
4:27
come March time, then we're going to
4:28
start sewing all our seeds, which is
4:30
exciting because I'm up north, so I'm a
4:33
bit behind with everyone. So we sewing
4:35
all those tomato seeds and there
4:37
corettes and uh beetroot lettuce
4:40
everything like that. So we're busy busy
4:42
busy in March. So we're trying to get as
4:44
much done as possible before we get
4:46
started.
4:48
So until next time everybody remember
4:52
keep smiling, keep shining and keep
4:54
gardening with Ben everyone.
