Let's get ready for planting our
0:02
potatoes on Good Friday. Welcome to
0:04
Gardening with Ben, everyone. And today
0:06
we're going to talk about getting ready
0:07
for planting our potatoes on Good
0:10
Friday. And you might say, why Good
0:11
Friday? It's an old gardener's tale that
0:13
you should plant them on Good Friday as
0:16
it's to do with the moon. So yeah, if
0:18
you're superstitious or follow the moon
0:21
like me, I always do follow it and I
0:24
always plant them on Good Friday, even
0:26
if it's early. I've always planted it
0:29
like sometimes Good Friday's in March
0:32
and yeah, we've always planted them on
0:33
Good Friday. Now, how do you get ready
0:36
for planting your potatoes? I'm going to
0:38
be growing mine in tubs this year
0:40
because I've done it for the last few
0:42
years and I prefer it to be honest
0:44
rather than planting them in the soil.
0:46
If you plant them in the soil, they're
0:47
susceptible for to wire worm and slugs.
0:51
And also, when you're digging them up,
0:53
you end up stabbing them and then you
0:54
ruin them, which I always do. And I end
0:57
up ruining all the good ones and all the
0:59
bad ones are the ones that I miss. And
1:02
yeah, I always struggle with that. So, I
1:04
grow them in tubs and then when they're
1:05
ready to harvest, you can just tip them
1:07
out and collect all the potatoes and not
1:09
risk about stabbing any. Obviously, you
1:12
need to keep them watered better because
1:14
sometimes uh they dry out a lot faster,
1:17
but if you're down here regular, that's
1:19
perfectly fine. So, let's show you the
1:21
containers that we're going to be
1:22
growing them in. So, these are the
1:25
containers that we're going to be
1:26
growing them in, which we got from
1:27
Oakland Gardens Limited. And we've got
1:30
10 of these. So, we'll probably plant
1:32
about three in each one. I think three
1:35
is enough. These are 30 liter. And as
1:37
you can see, they've got holes in the
1:39
bottom so that they're perfect for
1:40
drainage, and they won't get um flooded
1:44
with water if it rains really bad. But
1:47
yeah, they'll be absolutely perfect. So,
1:48
we're going to grow them in them. We're
1:50
going to keep them inside for the first
1:52
month or so, and then we'll take them
1:54
outside when it gets a bit warmer, and
1:56
that'll give them a speedier start down
1:58
in the plot. And what we tend to do is
2:01
that we put the compost in the bottom,
2:02
and obviously put soil in them. And then
2:04
we put some food in. And what sort of
2:07
food it is, you may ask. Well, it's
2:09
called actually called potato
2:11
fertilizer. And this is the potato
2:13
fertilizer that I will put in the
2:15
bottom. It'll obviously feed them
2:16
because potatoes will take a lot of the
2:18
nutrition from the compost. So, you need
2:20
to add that little bit extra. So, we'll
2:23
pop some around the potatoes and then
2:25
we'll put some on top every couple of
2:27
weeks once they're getting growing so
2:30
that they'll keep feeding them and
2:31
hopefully get some massive potatoes
2:36
And as for the potatoes, if you've not
2:38
got them yet, go to the garden centers.
2:40
Most have got them in at the moment. And
2:42
yeah, start chitting them. And chitting
2:46
them means that it starts some
2:48
sprouting. As you can see, they've got
2:49
little sprouts coming on their eyes and
2:52
they like blackening off like that. But
2:55
that's perfectly fine. You don't want
2:56
them really weed uh weedy and big shoots
3:00
on them. You just want these little
3:01
shoots on them like that. And the reason
3:04
why we chit them is because it gets them
3:06
ready for harvesting that couple of
3:08
weeks extra. And yeah, you don't need to
3:11
chit them if you don't want to chit
3:12
them, but that's one thing that I've
3:14
always done and I've always stuck with
3:16
doing them. So yeah, we'll keep them in
3:19
there till Good Friday. They need to be
3:21
in a light airy space and damp free and
3:24
hopefully you'll get some great
3:29
So, make sure you drop us a follow to
3:30
stay up to date with the potatoes and we
3:32
will be planting these on Good Friday.
3:34
Like I said, feel free to join along and
3:36
plant yours on Good Friday and we'll see
3:39
how we all get on with them all. So
3:41
until next time everyone remember keep
3:43
smiling, keep shining and keep gardening
