Let's answer some of your strawberry
0:02
questions. What you've been asking me on
0:04
a lot of posts at the moment. So,
0:06
welcome to Gardening with Ben. And in
0:07
today's episode, we're going to be
0:09
talking about strawberries. Yes, if
0:11
you've seen my latest videos, we've been
0:13
planting up hanging baskets full of
0:15
strawberries. Now, a lot of people asked
0:17
where I got these from, and these are
0:19
from Oakland's Gardens Limited. So, if
0:22
you check out their website, they're a
0:24
wholesaler, so the more you buy,
0:26
obviously, the cheaper they are as well.
0:28
And yeah, there's some great gardening
0:31
products on there for you to buy. And
0:32
I've got some great stuff from them. So,
0:35
let's have a look at them and let's try
0:36
and answer some of your questions.
0:39
So, one of the questions was, is it too
0:42
early to plant the strawberries? Well,
0:45
if you look at this, we have got new
0:47
growth growing on these bare roots which
0:50
were purchased. And yeah, I'll drop the
0:52
link to the strawberries in the
0:54
description. And as you can see, they
0:58
are taking they are taking root. These
1:00
are in the poly tunnel. So obviously
1:02
it's a bit warmer in here than it is
1:04
outside. Not too much warmer. It's still
1:07
cold, but you can see new life is
1:11
growing on these. So they are taking
1:13
they are growing and they are coming
1:15
along. So yes, they will do fantastic
1:18
here in the poly tunnel. The next
1:21
question was is about watering them. How
1:24
often should you water them? Now, I have
1:27
only had these up two weeks, and I
1:29
watered them when I first planted them,
1:31
and then I watered them last week, but
1:33
uh I've not been down to the a lotment
1:34
this week, and as you can see, they
1:36
absolutely still soaking wet. So, you
1:39
don't overwater them in the first couple
1:43
of months when you planted them.
1:45
Watering can cause root rot, which you
1:47
don't want on the strawberries. So, as
1:50
it's still cold and it's still damp,
1:52
they will keep wet and damp. So, they
1:54
will take roots. So, you don't need to
1:56
water them often. I'm going to stick to
1:58
watering them once a week to start off
1:59
with. And then as it starts to get
2:02
warmer, I'll possibly water them twice a
2:05
week. And then when it gets really warm
2:08
in the summertime, we'll water them
2:10
every single day. Now, me being a busy
2:13
man, I can't get down to the a lotment
2:14
every day. So, what we're going to do is
2:17
we're going to set up an irrigation
2:19
system so that we've got drippers in
2:22
everyone so it'll at least give them
2:25
some water every single day. And we're
2:27
going to connect it up to this water
2:29
butt here where I've got all this water
2:30
in. Now, it's going to be a solar
2:32
powered water pump because I've got no
2:35
electric down here. I used one last year
2:37
and it was fantastic. So, we're going to
2:39
run it up, run it along the top of the
2:41
pole and have the drippers into the
2:44
hanging baskets. So, that'll keep them
2:46
watered all the time. You can set the
2:50
timer to water when you want. So, you
2:52
could even have it twice a day if it is
2:54
really hot at the time. But, yeah, we
2:56
are going to have some fantastic
2:59
strawberries. So, I'm looking forward to
3:01
that. Now, the question again is about
3:03
feeding them. I've put some feeding them
3:06
to start off with. This is just the
3:08
Westland feed. Let me show you which it
3:10
is. This is the boost. And this says
3:14
it'll feed on for up to 6 months. So,
3:17
that'll be quite a while. However,
3:21
you don't want to be too kind with
3:23
putting feed on uh because you'll get
3:26
more leaves than strawberries. So, you
3:28
don't want more leaves than
3:29
strawberries. You want your
3:30
strawberries, don't you? So when they
3:32
start to flower, what we'll do is we'll
3:35
water them once a week with tomato feed.
3:38
Tomato feed is fantastic for fruit and
3:40
vegetable plants. So we'll be feeding
3:43
them once a week with tomato feed to
3:45
give them the food that they need to
3:47
produce the strawberries. So that is how
3:49
we're going to be feeding these. So
3:51
those are some of the questions what
3:53
people have been asking on my videos.
3:55
And I hope you found them all useful. If
3:57
you've got any other questions, please
3:59
drop them in the comments below and I'll
4:01
make more videos regarding those
4:03
questions.
4:05
So, I hope you found those questions and
4:07
answers useful on growing strawberries
4:09
in hanging baskets. Obviously, we'll be
4:11
doing more and more videos on a regular
4:13
basis. We'll do the poly tunnel tour
4:15
once a week, like I said, on a Sunday so
4:17
that you can see how things are growing
4:19
and how things are dying. I'm always
4:22
honest in my videos, but yeah, make sure
4:24
you stay tuned for that video once a
4:26
week. It's going to be exciting times in
4:28
the poly tunnel this year. We've got so
4:29
much potential and so much that's going
4:31
to be happening down here in the poly
4:33
tunnel. So, make sure you stay tuned for
4:35
that. So, yeah. Any questions on
4:37
strawberries growing in hanging baskets?
4:39
Drew, drop me a comment below and I'll
4:42
try and answering it in a video for you.
4:44
Until next time everyone, remember, keep
4:46
smiling, keep shining, and keep
4:48
gardening with Ben, everyone.
