Let's plant our Onwinds carrot seeds.
0:03
Welcome to Gardening with Ben. And today
0:04
we're going to be sewing our Unwinds
0:06
carrot seeds. These are called
0:08
resistorly F1, which resist the carrot
0:11
fly, which can damage crops. And these
0:14
are actually on a seed tape, so they're
0:17
perfectly spaced for when planting
0:20
directly into the soil, and you
0:23
shouldn't have to do much thinning. Now,
0:25
if you've been watching my videos
0:26
recently, we have built so many raised
0:29
beds in this poly tunnel. We're wanting
0:31
to grow more and more stuff throughout
0:34
the year, all year round, and hopefully
0:36
earlier and later in the season because
0:39
it'll be warmer in here. So, we're going
0:41
to start and try and grow some carrots.
0:43
Now, I've never had any success with
0:45
growing carrots in the 20 years in my a
0:48
lotment. So, this could be the year that
0:50
I have successful carrots. If I get
0:53
successful carrots, everything else
0:55
can't just go to pot. I just want some
0:58
successful carrots. So, there's
1:00
approximately 4 meters of tape on here.
1:03
So, we're going to give this a try and
1:04
get sewing these. So, let's see how well
1:09
So, this is the rais bed that I'm going
1:10
to do them in. It's quite deep, so
1:13
hopefully we get some decent sized
1:14
carrots. There's no black membrane
1:16
underneath it. So, if they need to get a
1:18
bit further, they can do, but they'll
1:20
probably fork if they hit the soil
1:22
because it'll probably be hard and stony
1:24
under there. But, this is nice, good
1:26
compost. So, we're going to put like a
1:30
divot in it like that. And then we're
1:32
going to put the seed tape in and then
1:35
cover it back with soil.
1:38
So, that's what the seed tape looks
1:40
like. It's like tissue paper, so it'll
1:42
dissolve pretty easy once it gets
1:44
watered in. And yeah, you can see the
1:46
seeds in the paper, but yeah, we need to
1:50
cover them over and then give them a
1:52
good water. We need to label where they
1:54
are as well, so we know where they're
1:56
going to pop up once they start growing.
1:59
But we're not doing them too deep. We're
2:01
going to add a thin layer of soil over
2:02
the top of them, and they should be
2:08
So that's them all covered over. So the
2:11
next big job is obviously to give them a
2:13
nice good watering to get them growing.
2:15
Fingers crossed. We just obviously need
2:17
it to warm up to help them germinate. We
2:19
put all the labels in where the rows
2:21
are. So hopefully we know where they're
2:23
all going to pop up and see how well
2:29
So there we are. We're giving it a good
2:32
Obviously, it'll need a good watering
2:34
over the next few days as obviously it's
2:36
pretty dry underneath with the compost,
2:38
but over the few weeks, it'll get pretty
2:41
wet. And hopefully the carrots will
2:44
start growing within a couple of weeks.
2:46
That's the plan. And then we'll be
2:48
harvesting them pretty soon. They
2:50
shouldn't take too long in the poly
2:52
tunnel once the heat starts to warm up
2:53
in May. And we should get some good
2:56
crops. Will this year be the first year
2:59
for me to get carrots? We'll just have
3:04
So, make sure you drop us a follow to
3:06
stay up to date with how well these
3:07
carrots get on and see if we're
3:09
harvesting them and get some great crops
3:11
this year down at the plot. So, until
3:13
next time everyone, remember, keep
3:14
smiling, keep shining, and keep
3:16
gardening. We're Ben, everyone.
