This video explains the important early season gardening jobs to focus on and how to prepare your garden for successful planting.
The guide covers seed sowing, organising growing areas, preparing soil, checking equipment, protecting young plants and planning upcoming crops. It also explains how early preparation helps plants establish faster and reduces problems later in the season.
If you want a strong start to the growing year, these simple practical tips will help you stay organised and ready for planting.

0:24
episode hello gardening with Ben
0:26
followers I hope you're all well well
0:29
it's Monday it's a new week and we are
0:33
here with a new podcast here for you and
0:37
yes it's live nice and early so that you
0:39
can listen to it on the way to work or
0:41
while you getting Brew or while you're
0:43
getting ready for work either way I'm at
0:46
work so that's why it's come early cuz I
0:48
pre-recorded it so that you still get
0:50
your regular fix of podcasts from
0:54
gardening with Ben cuz I know people
0:56
message me if I don't do a podcast
0:58
because they enjoy it that much and they
1:00
enjoy listening to it so I try and do
1:03
them as regular as possible whenever
1:05
I've got time to do
1:07
them so we are now on the 28th of
1:12
February can you believe it another
1:14
month has gone and tomorrow will be my
1:17
favorite day of the year which is
1:19
Pancake Day yes who loves Pancake Day I
1:23
certainly do and I will be having treal
1:27
on my pancakes uh I Absol absolutely
1:30
love them I can't be doing with this
1:31
grave lock I have to have syrup on mine
1:36
just oozing and making me feel sick by
1:39
the end of the
1:41
pancakes I think a lot of us do that
1:44
they have two men out and then they
1:46
regret it and then they think oh we'll
1:49
not have another pancake until next year
1:51
now but yeah I can't wait for pancake
1:54
day tomorrow so yeah what are we going
1:57
to be talking about today well we're
1:59
going to be talking about have you got
2:01
all the jobs done in the allotment and
2:03
garden for February that needed doing
2:06
and what have we achieved in February
2:09
because we have been extremely busy at
2:13
our alotment in February I really can't
2:15
believe how much I have actually got
2:18
done and like I keep on saying is that
2:22
we have not had a bad winter at all this
2:25
year it's been an absolutely fantastic
2:28
winter and getting everything prepared
2:31
and ready in time for the growing season
2:34
has been brilliant and we are well ahead
2:37
this year and hence the reason why I've
2:39
been doing lots lots more down at the
2:42
plot
2:42
because I'm well ahead of time and soon
2:47
I'll be able to start sewing all my
2:48
seeds once I've got all them sewn then I
2:51
can get back to doing more work in the
2:53
garden and getting it all ready but
2:55
sewing the seeds takes so much time and
2:58
uh writing all the labels up sing a few
3:01
seeds sprinkling them on covering them
3:03
over getting them all in the shed
3:05
getting them all watered getting them
3:07
all SED and then we've got to pot them
3:09
all on and grow them on a bit before the
3:12
frosts come and then we've got to plant
3:13
them all out I'm not putting anybody off
3:15
all the gardening definitely not but it
3:18
does take a lot of time and effort but
3:21
it's all enjoyable
3:23
stuff so this February I set myself the
3:26
mission of getting all my plot dug over
3:29
for all the beds dug over in February
3:32
which I have completed I'm so pleased
3:35
about that uh I've also dug over a new
3:38
area where there's going to be three new
3:40
beds this year and I'm looking forward
3:42
to Growing even more on the plot this
3:44
year and hopefully we will get some
3:47
great results cuz we've got the time and
3:50
the dedication that we can put in more
3:52
dedication down at the plot to do this
3:55
sort of work and get it all fixed and
3:57
ready for the year ahead
4:00
so I'm pleased that I'm encouraged to do
4:04
it because some years I feel
4:06
disheartened and I don't do well and I
4:08
think oh I can't be bothered to go on
4:10
another year but then I've got all my
4:11
supporters and my followers and they all
4:14
encourage me to carry on
4:17
gardening so what you need to what we
4:21
have mainly done is we've been preparing
4:23
the ground ready for this year we have
4:25
got some seeds planted this month um the
4:28
ones that needed to be St started early
4:30
but we've not got many seeds planted
4:33
whatsoever so what seeds is it that you
4:37
can plant in February and see if you've
4:39
planted them and let me know so we're
4:42
not going to go into too much detail
4:43
about what seeds to plant in February
4:45
because you can just listen to the
4:47
episode which we posted at the beginning
4:49
of the month if you want to listen in
4:51
depth about what seeds can be sewn in
4:53
February so the ones that you can SE
4:56
this month in February is orene
5:00
beetroot broad beans brussel sprouts
5:04
cabbage carrots cauliflower celery
5:09
garlic Jerusalem aroke leaks peas
5:15
peppers and radish shalots spring onions
5:19
and tomatoes and obviously you can start
5:22
chitting your potatoes so a lot of those
5:25
seeds you can actually start off in
5:27
March so if you've not started them
5:30
don't worry about it you can start them
5:31
off in March there's still plenty of
5:34
time but the main ones that you need to
5:35
be looking at sewing now are if you've
5:38
not already sewn them will be your orene
5:41
your peppers your tomatoes because they
5:44
take longer to grow and the quicker you
5:47
can start them off the more fruit time
5:50
you'll have on them and they'll keep
5:52
producing more fruit until the Colder
5:54
Weather so it's good time to get all
5:56
that all them seats done if you've not
5:59
already got got them
6:00
soon so what fruit can you plant in
6:03
February and this is what I've been
6:05
doing I've been planting so much fruit
6:07
this month because it is the time to be
6:09
planting fruit the weather's perfect the
6:11
ground is wet and they will take root
6:14
and start growing ready for summer so
6:18
this month you can start currants
6:21
blackberries fruit trees gooses
6:24
raspberries rhubarb and strawberry
6:27
plants so yeah I've got I've planted
6:30
some blueberries this month I've planted
6:32
some raspberries I've planted some
6:34
strawberries and yeah I'm looking
6:36
forward to getting some great crops from
6:39
my plants this year I've certainly put
6:42
in a lot of effort to get some more
6:43
fruit this year and hopefully we'll get
6:46
some fantastic results and yeah I'm
6:50
looking forward to hopefully getting
6:52
some black Brees off of our formless BR
6:54
be plants but we'll see hopefully
6:57
they'll grow they might take a couple of
6:58
years to get going but fingers crossed
7:00
they will get going so what flowers can
7:03
you sew in February bonias
7:06
chrysanthemums daas geraniums Liles
7:11
liilia roses and sweet peas so yes again
7:16
we've been planting roses this month we
7:19
haven't started our geraniums yet um
7:22
I've also purchased some lily bulbs well
7:24
I'll talk about that in another episode
7:27
so stay tuned for that so yeah we're
7:30
going to be starting loads of flowers
7:31
off ourself in March so we need to go
7:34
through all our flower seeds I purchased
7:36
loads and I talked about that in a
7:37
previous episode if you've not listened
7:39
to that I've purchased loads of flowers
7:41
this month so obviously I've grown got
7:44
my plants I bought my plants for my plot
7:47
but I've start got loads of seeds to
7:49
plant on the plot and it's going to be a
7:51
cracking year down at my plot I'm really
7:54
looking forward to sharing photos with
7:55
it if it doesn't turn out well I'll I'll
7:58
definitely cry and be disappointed but
8:01
if if it all goes to plan it will look
8:04
great and fingers crossed it does go to
8:07
plan this year it just depends if
8:09
anything else comes up and we don't
8:11
manage to do
8:12
it so what jobs did you need to do in
8:15
February make sure you get all these
8:17
jobs done if you've not got them already
8:19
done get them done as fast as possible
8:22
so asparagus you can mulch that this
8:25
month get some Mulch on it and get it
8:28
woken up ready for starting to grow in
8:30
the
8:31
springtime potatoes if you've not got
8:34
your potatoes yet go out and get them
8:36
because they are selling out fast I saw
8:38
some in Wilkinson's the other day so
8:40
places have still got them in so go and
8:42
get yourself some potatoes and start
8:45
chitting them if you are chitting them
8:47
if not get them ready for planting out
8:50
pretty soon I'll be planting mine out on
8:53
Good Friday I always plant my potatoes
8:55
on Good Friday to do with the moon I go
8:57
by the old wife's tail but yeah
9:00
definitely so your fruit trees apple
9:03
trees pear
9:05
trees and yeah they can be pruned this
9:09
month if you've not pruned them get them
9:12
pruned get them tidied up but don't
9:14
prune any fruits that have got a stone
9:16
in them like your plums your peaches
9:19
your cherries they don't want to be
9:21
pruned until the end of spring leading
9:25
into summer as pruning them now can
9:28
affect the fruit
9:30
and you really don't want to affect the
9:31
fru in on them I definitely don't want
9:33
to affect the fru in on my plum tree uh
9:36
my best best fruit tree on the plot and
9:40
I absolutely have fantastic crops on
9:43
it black Curren if you've not pruned
9:46
them back from last year get them pruned
9:48
back same goes for all bushers
9:51
gooseberries and red currents if you've
9:53
not pruned them give them the pruning
9:55
that they need tidy them up get them so
9:58
that they've got some vent ation around
10:00
them so that they can breathe once all
10:02
the leaves grew and yeah get them
10:04
mulched get them get them all ver for
10:07
growing this year the effort that you
10:09
put into it they will provide the best
10:11
fruit coming back from them and if
10:14
you've not pruned your
10:16
raspberries Autumn raspberries prune
10:18
them to the ground summer raspberries
10:21
prune the ones to the ground which had
10:24
the fruit on last year the New Growth
10:26
last year is the ones that will have the
10:28
fruit on the this year I must have gone
10:30
over raspberry so many times but I hope
10:33
that you all get get
10:35
it so what do you need to do in the
10:39
flower garden if you've not already done
10:40
it clamus prune your summer clamus this
10:43
month fuches these can be pruned back to
10:47
two buds on each shoot this month I do
10:51
need some fuches on my plot that is
10:53
something I do need to buy so we need to
10:55
look out for futures that's the thing
10:57
that I've not gotten it's on my list of
10:59
things to get I've obviously got my hyr
11:01
engers now so I'm pleased I've got them
11:04
but I've not got fuches he I've
11:06
definitely got heav on my plot so it
11:09
says now is the time to prune these back
11:12
it's funny that one because mine are
11:14
flowering they look good and I don't
11:16
really want to touch them so I might
11:19
leave mine for a bit longer but it does
11:21
say to prune them back now but yeah
11:24
we'll keep an eye on them and we'll see
11:26
how we get on with them panes keep
11:28
deadheading them while every you're
11:30
deadheaded them the more flowers will
11:32
keep coming on them and keep them going
11:35
keep them lasting through this
11:37
Springtime the more you dead head them
11:40
and look after them the more the will
11:42
flow off here and look great in the
11:45
garden pansies are something that really
11:47
do brighten up the garden during the
11:49
winter
11:50
time so yeah we have had a busy February
11:54
we've got absolutely loads done to say
11:56
we've been battered and bruised by all
11:58
the storms we've had
11:59
we've certainly been productive down our
12:01
allotment and I'm looking forward to
12:03
being even more productive in March
12:05
especially we're starting to se the seat
12:07
at I'll probably be starting midm March
12:09
end of March we s my seeds so make sure
12:12
you stay tuned for that because we'll be
12:14
talking all about it throughout March so
12:17
yeah tomorrow's episode will be talking
12:19
about all the jobs that you need to do
12:21
in your garden and allotment in March uh
12:25
expect it to be longer because as months
12:27
go on there's more and more to be
12:29
getting done with and then Wednesday's
12:32
episode I'll be talking about all the
12:33
seeds that you need to start off in
12:35
March and again that will probably being
12:37
a longer one because there's more and
12:40
more that can be sewn in March so if
