1:01
I'm here to help you grow your passion
1:03
and reap the rewards so grab your gloves
1:06
roll up your sleeves and let's get
1:08
started on this year's gardening
1:13
Journey hey everyone and welcome back to
1:16
gardening with Ben it's the weekend the
1:20
weekend is finally here let us celebrate
1:23
let us shout from the rooftops because
1:26
Saturday is here and there's no snow
1:29
it's all gone thankfully hopefully when
1:32
I get down to the alotment it's all gone
1:34
but everywhere that I've been around
1:36
there's not been any snow around so
1:37
fingers crossed it has all gone so I'm
1:41
so excited to get back down to my
1:43
allotment today and hopefully get some
1:47
work done down there and if the
1:49
temperature goes by what it were like
1:51
yesterday on Friday it will actually a
1:53
decent day so hopefully we'll be
1:56
productive down there and it won't rain
1:58
and we'll be able to do plenty of work
2:01
until the weather changes and it's
2:02
frosty or it's raining or it's
2:06
sleeting fingers crossed we'll get
2:08
something done well we're definitely
2:09
going anyway it is on our list to
2:12
go so what are we doing at the allotment
2:16
this week well we've got lots to be
2:19
getting on with and this week I'm going
2:22
to be obviously filling up my bird seed
2:25
I do that on a weekly basis until I get
2:28
some squirrel proof bird feeders where
2:31
it don't all go away uh go down straight
2:35
away but yeah we'll be filling up my
2:37
bird feed as the future is a hefty
2:39
responsibility and not one that we take
2:41
lightly but then taking things lightly
2:43
has never been what Hefty is about
2:45
that's why we've created the heier new
2:47
program that turns hard to recycle
2:49
Plastics into valuable resources like
2:51
park benches and building materials to
2:53
participate simply fill up an orange
2:54
Hefty renew bag with accepted items tie
2:57
it up and drop it in with your regular
2:58
recycling that that's it it's that easy
3:01
it's time to rethink recycling with
3:03
renew particular valued resources may
3:05
vary by geography more info available at
3:08
he.com and then obviously feeding the
3:11
cat because the cat waits for me as soon
3:13
as I get to my allotment my dad feeds it
3:15
every single day but I I feed it at
3:17
weekends so we'll be feeding the
3:20
capat and then hopefully I'm going to be
3:23
water in my sweet peas and my geraniums
3:26
because last week when I went down it
3:28
all Frozen up all my water water uh
3:31
container so I weren't able to water
3:33
anything but the plants won't need much
3:35
water at this time of year there's
3:36
plenty of moisture around so hopefully
3:39
they're all still alive but we'll give
3:40
them more water this week CU we've not
3:42
watered them for quite a while and we'll
3:44
be planting them out in the spring time
3:46
when it does warm up and hopefully when
3:48
the chance of frost is pass because we
3:50
don't want to kill them off as soon as
3:52
we put them out obviously we've grown
3:54
them through the winter period and
3:56
they're in my Greenhouse it's not a
3:57
heated Greenhouse so if they survive
4:00
until Springtime I'll be happy if not
4:02
we've giving them a try but hopefully
4:05
save some money by doing it so yeah
4:08
we'll be doing that we're watering them
4:10
and then we're going to start digging
4:12
over some of my beds again last time I
4:14
dug them over around October time so
4:17
it's been about 3 months since we've
4:18
given a dig over obviously there's no
4:20
weeds growing in them it's too cold for
4:23
any weeds to be growing but we just dig
4:25
them over so that the frost can get into
4:27
the soil break it up and kill any Roots
4:30
what are growing in there if we keep
4:32
turning it over so we'll keep doing that
4:35
all the way up to May time when I will
4:37
be planting stuff out obviously the
4:39
weeds will start growing around March
4:41
time and stuff like that so we'll be
4:43
digging it over more regularly than once
4:46
every three
4:47
months so we'll be doing that and then
4:49
I'm going to be filming some videos as
4:51
well down there I've made a list of all
4:53
the videos what I want to film this
4:55
weekend so hopefully we'll be getting
4:57
some content back out on YouTube again
4:59
because some people obviously prefer
5:01
seeing the visuals rather than just
5:03
listening to
5:05
me so hopefully we'll be doing some
5:07
videos down there and I've ordered a new
5:11
uh phone holder for being at the
5:14
allotment so as well as obviously
5:16
recording on my tripod uh it goes on a
5:19
band that goes around my neck so you can
5:22
actually see like what I'm doing with my
5:24
hands so I can like film potting up or
5:27
sewing my seats and doing stuff like
5:29
that you can actually see it from my
5:31
perspective as well so we're going to
5:33
hopefully get some new camera angles on
5:36
videos it all sounds professional but
5:39
trust me the videos won't
5:40
be we just do it for the fun and
5:43
obviously people like to watch them so
5:46
we'll be doing that but yeah we've got
5:48
that to do and then obviously in a
5:52
couple of months hopefully we're going
5:53
to be painting all my beds up because
5:56
all the wood paints all washed off now
5:59
it doesn't last last five years like
6:00
most of them say on the tin uh they only
6:03
last a couple of years a year at the
6:06
most uh so I tend to paint them every
6:08
couple of years just to Spruce them up
6:10
and look nice obviously you don't need
6:11
to paint them but it protects them from
6:13
rotting a bit more faster and obviously
6:16
makes it look nice aesthetically uh so
6:19
it'll look good for photos and stuff
6:21
like that so we'll be painting all them
6:23
up the future is a hefty responsibility
6:26
and not one that we take lightly but
6:27
then taking things lightly is never what
6:29
Hefty is about that's why we've created
6:31
the Hefty renew program that turns hard
6:33
to recycle Plastics into valuable
6:35
resources like park benches and building
6:37
materials to participate simply fill up
6:39
an orange Hefty renew bag with accepted
6:41
items tie it up and drop it in with your
6:43
regular recycling that's it it's that
6:46
easy it's time to rethink recycling with
6:48
renew particular valued resources may
6:50
vary by geography more info available at
6:52
Hefty renew.com I do hopefully need to
6:56
try and Source some wood chip for
6:58
because my paths could do it rewood
7:00
chiping this year uh I put a load down
7:03
last winter and obviously it rots down
7:06
over the year so hopefully we'll try and
7:08
get some wood chip sorted down for the
7:11
allotment last time my neighbor got a
7:13
load from the council so we'll have to
7:15
see if if he can speak to his contact
7:17
and hopefully get some wood chip down on
7:19
the paths but there's loads of jobs to
7:22
be doing this winter time and this is a
7:24
time when you're doing all them odd
7:27
little jobs around the allotment
7:28
sprucing it up tidying it up doing any
7:31
repairs and getting it all planned and
7:33
ready for next year well this year now
7:36
and it's exciting part because come
7:39
March time I'm going to be sewing all my
7:41
seeds all my seeds will be getting sewn
7:44
and I'll be going down there regular
7:45
little water them at night and stuff
7:47
like that so we'll be having lots to get
7:49
be getting on with down at the alotment
7:52
so it's going to be a busy few months
7:54
coming up but I so can't wait to be SE
7:58
my seeds that's my favorite part the
7:59
year
8:01
sewing the seeds seeing them germinate
8:05
planting them out and then seeing the
8:07
produce what's produced on them it's so
8:10
heartwarming seeing the
8:13
final product really of what you've done
8:17
and seeing how it's actually grown and
8:19
how fantastic it is so yeah that is our
8:23
day Roundup down at the alotment
8:26
hopefully we'll get as much done as
8:27
possible and tomorrow podcast obviously
8:30
we'll be talking about what we have
8:32
actually done so hopefully we can say
8:34
that we've done some stuff down there
8:36
and obviously soon I'm going to be
8:38
preparing for the Big Bird Watch down
8:40
there I'm going to get a load of
8:41
different varieties of seed and
8:44
hopefully get some pictures of some
8:45
birds down at my allotment and yeah
8:48
fingers crossed hopefully we get to see
8:51
some birds down there I've been seeing
8:52
blue tis down there regularly Robins
8:55
down there and I might try and get some
8:57
black birds down there so I might get
8:58
some sulan and raisins because black
9:01
birds absolutely love them so if you're
9:03
wanted to attract the black birds get
9:05
some sultanas and raisins and just put
9:07
them in a little bowl obviously put them
9:09
high up because they attract the rats
9:10
and stuff like that but yeah try and
9:13
attract some black birds to your garden
9:15
as black birds are absolutely beautiful
9:18
the future is a hefty responsibility and
9:20
not one that we take lightly but then
9:22
taking things lightly has never been
9:23
what Hefty is about that's why we've
9:25
created the Hefty renew program that
9:27
turns hard to recycle Plastics into Val
9:29
valuable resources like park benches and
9:31
building materials to participate simply
9:33
fill up an orange Hefty renew bag with
9:35
accepted items tie it up and drop it in
9:37
with your regular recycling that's it
9:39
it's that easy it's time to rethink
9:42
recycling with renew particular valued
9:44
resources may vary by geography more
9:46
info available at Hefty renew.com
9:48
so hopefully we're going to get plenty
9:51
done down at the allotment obviously I'm
9:54
posting more and more videos on my
9:56
Instagram stories my Facebook Stories so
9:59
can follow along on a day how what we're
10:01
getting up to and yeah and I've been
10:04
sharing posts as well on my Facebook
10:06
page of little blog ideas and what to do
10:10
we at amarillas what jobs need doing in
10:13
the garden in January what needs to be
10:15
planted so yeah we're posting lots of
10:18
different things and yesterday I posted
10:20
a post on um how to prevent slugs from
10:24
eating everything stop slugs from eating
10:26
everything if only we could do that but
10:29
yeah I might talk about that in one of
10:30
my podcasts actually we'll do that as
10:32
one of my podcasts how to stop slugs
10:35
from attacking everything in your garden
10:37
what you can plan to stop them attacking
10:41
everything and hopefully getting some
10:43
produce out of it cuz my neighbor he
10:46
gets absolutely loads of looks on his
10:48
allotment but thankfully touchwood I
10:50
don't get many whether it's because I
10:53
let the weeds disguise all my
10:56
vegetables but yeah hopefully we'll be
10:58
recording in that podcast as well for
11:00
you soon so I hope you all have a
11:03
fantastic day everyone make sure you do
11:06
get out in the garden make sure you do
11:08
something like feed the birds or fill a
11:10
water bowl up them to have a little
11:12
drink out of just go outside and enjoy
11:15
some fresh air today everyone and I hope
11:19
