and let's enjoy today's
0:24
episode hello gardening with Ben fans I
0:27
hope you're all well while it's Monday I
0:30
hope it's Monday because hopefully this
0:33
will go out as like I said my
0:35
subscriptions due to end yesterday but
0:37
we pre-recorded these and put these on
0:39
so hopefully they will still go out on
0:42
time for you to listen to if not
0:45
there'll be a book upload on Friday for
0:47
you to listen
0:48
to but yeah we hopefully get these
0:52
episodes up and running for you but yeah
0:56
it's a new week down at the allotment
0:59
and usually
1:00
I'm saying start making your lists on
1:04
Friday for the weekend but this week is
1:07
going to be a scorcher of a week it's
1:10
going to raise up to about 20° while it
1:13
is here in Sheffield it's forecast for
1:15
20 de CSI which is fantastic weather
1:20
which means you need to start making
1:22
those lists for this week you need to
1:24
make the most of every opportunity out
1:27
in the garden this week while the good
1:29
work ever is here whether it
1:32
be early in the morning before you go to
1:35
work or whether it be late at night
1:38
after you finished work but make the
1:40
most of this weather and by the M
1:43
meaning of making the most of this
1:45
weather is that you need to start
1:47
looking at sewing seeds now you need to
1:51
be getting your seed packets prepared
1:53
you need to be getting them in order you
1:55
need to start looking at what needs to
1:57
be growing now and yeah start thinking
2:00
about sewing all them seeds in in the
2:03
greenhouse and it's going to be a
2:05
mammoth task for me let alone anybody
2:08
else because I'm going totally mad with
2:10
my seeds this year um when I went to buy
2:13
all my flower seeds I just looked at
2:16
them all and I purchased them
2:18
all if you're going to purchase some
2:20
seeds why not purchase them all uh if
2:23
you're addicted to seeds like me you
2:25
will know the feeling if you see some
2:27
seeds you will certainly buy some more
2:30
seeds and yeah definitely but we have
2:35
got a busy week I'm back on nights on
2:38
Tuesday night so I'll be going to the
2:40
plot today on Monday and making the most
2:43
of this weather it's going to get up to
2:45
20 on Tuesday I think it is so I'll be
2:48
down at the alotment early on Tuesday
2:50
and then going to bed Tuesday night
2:52
before I start my night shifts because I
2:55
need to make the most of this weather
2:56
like I said while we've got it and this
3:00
week's tasks down at the allotment will
3:03
be I need to start off finishing my pond
3:06
off which I started the other day and if
3:09
you've listened to my other gardening
3:10
podcast Channel called gardening and
3:12
allotment tips you'll have heard me talk
3:14
about encouraging frogs to the Garden in
3:17
the allotment now that is my main aim
3:19
this year on my allotment to get as many
3:22
frogs as possible down there because
3:25
obviously the frogs will go around
3:27
eating all the Slugs up and that is what
3:30
you want to do if you've not got a pond
3:32
on your plot or in your garden try and
3:35
get one on obviously if you've got kids
3:36
you won't want one but try and get a
3:39
pond on your plot if you have got kids
3:42
just have a look at other options you
3:44
can have a shallow Little Pond just
3:46
somewhere for the frogs to jump into and
3:50
enjoy the water if you can encourage the
3:53
frogs to your alotment you are doing a
3:56
fantastic job because you don't want to
3:58
be using slug palletts frogs are a
4:01
natural defense in killing the Slugs and
4:05
slugs are an nightmare unless you're
4:07
going to go around and gather all the
4:10
Slugs at night I've seen certain people
4:13
they put a flashlight on the head and
4:15
they actually go around collecting all
4:16
the Slugs at night and picking them all
4:18
up and getting them all and chucking
4:20
them away from the plot uh but yeah I've
4:23
seen people do that uh so if you want a
4:26
natural way to stop the Slugs encourage
4:28
the frogs on to your plot and we're
4:31
going to be encouraging so much Wildlife
4:33
to our plot this year uh my my next
4:36
major step is to encourage the birds
4:38
onto the plot and that's going to be
4:40
April no yeah April's task uh we're
4:43
going to be putting lots of bird feeders
4:45
up around my plot and hopefully get some
4:48
beautiful birds coming to the plot it'll
4:51
it'll cost money obviously keeping the
4:52
bird feeders uh filled up but the more
4:55
people that listen to this podcast the
4:57
more we can feed the birds
5:00
so keep sharing this podcast with
5:02
everybody and it'll encourage the bird
5:05
to app plot so that's one main task what
5:08
we've got to do but um obviously
5:10
hopefully I'll finish my pond off I'll
5:12
be buying some pond plants in April when
5:15
I get paid so that'll be one thing that
5:17
I do then hopefully this week I will be
5:23
finishing off my main area of my plot I
5:25
started it on Saturday I've been
5:29
clearing all my main beds uh I've
5:32
trimmed back all my summer raspberries
5:34
they're all ready for this year now it's
5:36
a case of digging over all my beds I
5:39
have weeded them all uh they've just
5:41
obviously got flattened a bit uh over
5:43
the past few weeks so I need to dig them
5:45
over again I'm going to keep digging
5:46
them over every couple of weeks until
5:49
it's time for planting the more roots
5:51
and stuff I can get out of them beds now
5:54
the better they will be in the summer
5:55
for not having as many weeds in them uh
5:58
so that is how main task to keep digging
6:00
them over every couple of weeks so we're
6:03
going to be digging all them over I've
6:04
got all my paths to sort out which is a
6:06
mammoth job in itself because I've got
6:09
so many paths um so I've got all that to
6:13
do and then I've got the top of my plot
6:16
to sort out which is going to be an
6:19
absolutely tough job I'm guessing that
6:21
I'll go into airpo that bit but we've
6:23
got so much rubbish at the plot if
6:25
you're anything like me you just keep
6:26
moving the rubbish further and further
6:28
up your plot and and until there's too
6:31
much so I'm starting to clear all that
6:33
now and get all that out of the way
6:35
because I've got such a big area at the
6:37
top of my plot where I've been chucking
6:38
all my rubbish it's going to be a nice
6:41
new area which I want as a herb garden
6:44
I'd love a herb garden not necessarily
6:46
just for the herbs but
6:48
for getting the smell and encouraging
6:51
the bees to the plot as well herbs are
6:54
good for attracting the bees and even if
6:56
it's just a nice seated area I want a
6:58
nice seat to sit down down on I've not
7:00
got a seating area on my plot at the
7:02
moment so that is what I'm going to be
7:04
looking at doing over the next couple of
7:06
weeks so I'm hoping we can get all that
7:09
completed and all that finished over the
7:11
next few weeks because it's it is a
7:13
tough job and this time of year is so
7:16
much hard work down at the allotment
7:19
because I do push myself probably too
7:21
much and I will get through it all I
7:24
will get on with it but I just expect
7:27
too much from my allotment sometimes
7:29
whether it's because I want to please my
7:31
followers or whether it's just because I
7:33
want to please myself but I do like to
7:35
keep busy down there and another new
7:38
thing what I want to build I want to
7:40
build some raised beds at the end of
7:42
each of my rows uh just out of scrap
7:45
pieces of wood um I just want to build
7:48
some Square beds at the end of each bed
7:50
end of each uh path just to add like an
7:54
extra bit of space to grow in really and
7:58
I want to see what can grow in there
8:00
whether it be some patunas what hang
8:03
down over the edges or whether it be
8:05
some squash plants but we'll see we'll
8:08
see what we're growing there um but yeah
8:11
I'm excited for this year it's going to
8:13
be a good year and again if you've not
8:17
listened to my other podcast Channel
8:18
gardening and allotment tips go over and
8:21
have a listen to that we're going to be
8:22
talking about different topics of the
8:24
week uh we're going to be talking about
8:26
Planting onions planting potatoes
8:29
planting broad beans planting peas um on
8:33
that podcast we talk about all different
8:36
topics but we just usually stick to one
8:38
Topic in the episode so that we're just
8:41
concentrating on that and you'll be able
8:44
to get lots and lots of information on
8:46
it so yeah hopefully you are going to
8:49
have a fantastic week hopefully this has
8:51
gone out on Monday and not Friday but we
8:54
will
8:55
see so I hope that you enjoy this hot
8:58
weather what we're going to get yet I
9:00
hope you enjoy it and make the most of
9:02
the garden like I've said and yeah
