This video explains essential winter gardening tasks that help keep plants healthy and prepare growing areas for the coming season. Learn practical maintenance jobs such as clearing beds, protecting plants and checking soil condition.
The guide covers caring for overwintering plants, preventing frost damage and organising the garden to avoid problems later in the year. These steps help plants survive colder weather and make spring planting easier.
If you want to stay productive during winter and improve results next season, this video provides practical gardening advice suitable for gardens, raised beds and outdoor growing spaces.

0:48
break from these podcast but we are back
0:50
now back with new episodes for you to
0:53
listen to and wow has it been chilly
0:56
this week have you had the snow where
0:58
you are well it's know early last week
1:03
and it's stuck around where I am it's
1:06
still here um the temperature's not
1:08
risen above zero this week it's been
1:11
absolutely Baltic we just need it to
1:13
warm up and to get rid of all this snow
1:16
and ice what's left around where we are
1:21
if you've not listened to my previous
1:23
podcast go and listen to that one
1:25
because that one's talking about all the
1:26
things that we can s in January
1:29
obviously depending on the weather but
1:31
today's episode we're going to be
1:33
talking all about what you can do in the
1:37
garden in January obviously depending on
1:40
the weather as well but these are the
1:42
sort of tasks that you can get completed
1:44
tick them off and then you can move on
1:46
to doing all your other little jobs
1:49
around the garden and everything like
1:51
that and I just want to say a big
1:53
welcome to all the new listeners out
1:55
there as we are pushing this podcast out
1:58
a lot more at the moment so hopefully
2:00
we're getting a lot more people
2:01
listening and if you're not following
2:03
this podcast click the follow button and
2:05
the bell and you'll get notified when
2:08
new podcasts come up so yeah today we're
2:12
going to be talking about all the jobs
2:13
which you can do in the garden in
2:15
January depending on the weather like
2:19
we've got a lot of our jobs completed
2:21
already before this Baltic weather came
2:24
but some of these jobs we will be doing
2:26
ourselves and Ticking them off as we go
2:28
along and these podcasts we talk about
2:32
my gardening Journey what I'm doing what
2:34
I'm getting up to what I'm sewing and
2:37
what we are getting completed down on
2:40
the allotment every time we go so first
2:43
off we're going to talk about what we
2:45
can do in the vegetable garden this
2:47
month obviously we've not got many
2:49
vegetables growing at this time of year
2:51
but we've got a few things what can be
2:54
grow first off is peas if you growing
2:58
some early peas cover the the ground to
3:01
warm it up before sewing unless you are
3:03
sewing them in pots
3:05
beforehand
3:07
and I've grown my peas in the ground
3:09
many many years and I've had good crops
3:12
but now we've got loads of squirrels
3:14
living where we are down on our alotment
3:16
not that I don't like them I I love
3:19
seeing the squirrels down there but
3:20
obviously they're a pest and they'll
3:22
like dig up all the food and eat them
3:24
all and obviously because there's not
3:25
much food around at the moment they'll
3:27
Pinch A lot of them like the rats and
3:28
the mice will so sometimes it's better
3:31
to grow stuff in pots get them strong
3:33
enough and then plant them out when
3:35
they're big enough and then they won't
3:36
get Disturbed as much parsnips if you've
3:39
grown parsnips last year now is the
3:42
perfect time to be digging them up this
3:44
cold weather The Frozen Ground the snow
3:46
on the ground gives them a better taste
3:49
so always wait until we've had a frost
3:52
before digging up your par
3:54
Snips potatoes if you're growing these
3:57
in the greenhouse or polyany which you
3:59
can do through the winter periods you
4:01
can't grow them outside cuz it's too
4:02
cold but you can grow them in the
4:04
greenhouse and poly tunnel make sure
4:06
they're kept warm with a heater or use a
4:09
fleece to protect them from the cold
4:11
nights in January now it need a lot of
4:14
power to keep it warm at the
4:16
moment it's absolutely Baltic out there
4:19
but yeah we grow ours uh as we're ready
4:21
for harvesting at Christmas time we've
4:23
not got any potatoes growing at this
4:25
time of year what jobs can you do in
4:28
your fruit Garden this
4:31
month now this is perfect time to be
4:33
doing all your pruning of your fruit
4:35
trees while the plants are dormant while
4:37
they're not growing the buds and while
4:40
they are hibernating for the winter so
4:43
like your apple trees your black
4:45
currents your gooseberries your patries
4:47
your red
4:48
currents make sure you prune them all
4:51
shape them all up make sure there's
4:52
plenty of room for the air to get around
4:55
and get ready but don't prune PL
4:58
anything that's got a stone inside so
5:00
for example your plums your cherries
5:03
your apricots your peaches don't prune
5:06
them at this time of year you meant to
5:07
prune them around middle of Springtime
5:10
end of Springtime as they can get Silver
5:13
Leaf if you prune them at this time of
5:15
year they don't coat well with being
5:17
pruned in the winter
5:19
time rhubarb plants if you want them to
5:22
grow early rubab why not try forcing it
5:24
to get early crops I also like to
5:27
sprinkle chicken pallet of manure around
5:29
the crowns to help feed it for the year
5:32
ahead but obviously don't put put it on
5:34
the crowns because it can burn them as
5:37
well my rhubarb up to the other week was
5:39
growing really well it was growing
5:42
already and it shouldn't be growing yet
5:43
it shouldn't be waking up until March
5:45
time but it will growing but it'll all
5:47
be dead again now with all this cold
5:49
weather it will have gone back to sleep
5:52
and it'll start growing again in March
5:55
time so General fruit Garden jobs check
5:58
the stakes supports wires you use in
6:01
your garden replace any that you need to
6:04
if any fruit tree or bush has had to cut
6:07
it all down below soil level or get it
6:10
out if
6:12
possible carry on planting fruit trees
6:14
and bushes this month as long as the
6:16
ground is workable to do
6:19
it what jobs need doing in the flower
6:22
garden at this time of year well again
6:25
there's not many flowers growing at this
6:27
time of year but the sort of jobs that
6:29
you can do are pansies any flowers that
6:32
have died these can be de dehe headed to
6:35
encourage New Growth roses if you've not
6:38
pruned your roses yet this can still be
6:40
done this month while the rose bush is
6:44
dormant so that is all the jobs which
6:46
need doing in January there's not many
6:48
jobs obviously through the months we'll
6:51
get more and more jobs that need doing
6:53
every single month down at the allotment
6:56
and we talk about this every single
6:57
month we talk about what to that month
7:00
coming up so one of the main things that
7:04
I like to do during the winter period is
7:07
to make sure I feed the birds as like
7:10
this sort of weather the ground is rock
7:12
hard they can't get the worms out
7:14
there's not many berries around
7:15
everything's hidden by snow or Frost
7:19
there's not much around so make sure you
7:21
do keep feeding your birds on a regular
7:24
basis now I've got some bird feeders and
7:26
the squirrels eat loads out of them
7:28
unfortunately so I'm going to be
7:30
investing in some new uh squirrel proof
7:33
bird feeders over the coming months so
7:36
watch out for me sharing posts on that
7:39
but obviously they're quite a bit more
7:40
expensive because they're made out of
7:42
metal and they've got metal frame around
7:44
them to stop the squirrels from being
7:46
able to get to them so hopefully
7:49
obviously it's quite a bit of money
7:50
expense to buy but it's a good
7:52
investment because the seed won't be
7:54
going down as fast so in the long run
7:57
and hopefully fingers cross will last
7:59
forever
8:00
while they'll last a long time so we're
8:02
going to be doing that and it's a big
8:04
bird watch coming up pretty soon as well
8:07
so if you've not checked that out check
8:09
it out online the Big Bird Watch and
8:11
help see how many birds are coming to
8:15
your Gardens and your allotments in add
8:17
them up and send them in and it's to
8:20
help calculate what birds we've got and
8:23
how many species we've got out there so
8:26
it's all good fun and good fun to do
8:28
with the family as well so if you've not
8:30
got a bird feeder in your garden you
8:32
don't have to go out and buy loads of
8:33
bird feeders or stuff like that just buy
8:35
one get some seed up and feed them birds
8:38
and encourage your blue tis your Robins
8:41
your black
8:42
birds encourage them to your garden but
8:44
obviously they can attract rats and mice
8:47
and stuff like that so don't put them
8:48
anywhere where you don't want to attract
8:51
Vermin to your plot my dad puts a little
8:54
like thing underneath it where it
8:56
catches any seed that drops so then it
9:00
stops the rats and mice from being
9:01
attracted to them so have a look around
9:04
for one of those as
9:05
well so yeah that is it for today's
9:08
episode a bit of a short and sweet one
9:11
but that is all the jobs which need
9:12
doing in January this month tomorrow
9:15
we're going to be giving you an update
9:17
on how things are growing at home
9:20
obviously I'm growing things at home at
9:22
the moment I'm trying to give it a head
9:23
start I'm not growing loads of things
9:25
I'm growing a few things so make sure
