This video explains which jobs to focus on during the autumn period to prepare an allotment for the colder season and the year ahead. It shows practical tasks that protect soil, crops and structures.
The guide covers clearing beds, improving soil, protecting plants, organising tools and preparing growing areas. It also explains how completing these tasks early reduces work later and improves overall productivity.
If you want a well-prepared and productive allotment, this video provides practical beginner-friendly advice on seasonal garden preparation and planning.

1:12
today's
1:15
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
1:18
gardening with Ben it's a brand new week
1:22
we start the weekend is finally over
1:25
unfortunately no not what we want but
1:29
wow what a weekend it has been it's been
1:32
absolutely gorgeous where is Winter
1:35
where is the cold weather of Autumn this
1:38
is actually a really
1:40
nice Autumn that we're having and as I
1:43
mentioned in my tour video what I've uh
1:46
shared on YouTube uh yesterday it's not
1:49
actually rained for ages how's anyone
1:52
realize that it's not rained for ages
1:56
and when I were looking at my garlic and
1:57
my onions like some of them haven't
1:59
started popping through yet and that's
2:00
probably because we've not had no R to
2:03
water so I've had to water and it's not
2:06
often you'd be watering outside in this
2:08
sort of weather but yeah I'm having to
2:11
water my garlic my onions to get them
2:14
going which is hard which you you
2:17
wouldn't often think about to be honest
2:20
um one of the jobs that I did over the
2:21
weekend was fill all my water buts back
2:24
up
2:25
because they turn our water off at our
2:28
alotment site over winter period because
2:30
they don't want the pipes to freeze and
2:32
them to burst even though they never
2:34
usually do um but yeah they've started
2:36
turning it off
2:38
again and we have to make sure we've got
2:41
enough water cuz it don't turn it on
2:42
till like April time and I usually start
2:46
all my seeds off in March so I'll need
2:49
to keep on watered from beginning of
2:51
March if you get me um obviously I've
2:54
got the water on my plot as well from my
2:57
water BS outside but whever the water's
2:59
turned on I'll be using it out of the
3:01
tap until they turn it off and then I'll
3:04
have to start using it out of the water
3:05
Buzz which I don't really want to be
3:07
using so we need it to start raining I I
3:10
I I don't really want to say this but we
3:12
do need some
3:15
rain but yeah hopefully we'll get some
3:18
rain soon we'll have to check the
3:20
forecast on that but I did get
3:24
absolutely loads of work done down at
3:26
the allotment and like I said if you've
3:28
not checked out my tour video for my
3:31
allotment for this weekend go and check
3:33
it out on my YouTube channel called
3:35
gardening with Ben and you'll be to see
3:38
how well my allotments coming on it's
3:40
starting to look fantastic all the beds
3:43
cleared the paths are nearly all cleared
3:45
I've still got a couple more paths to
3:47
sort out then they we all done then it's
3:51
a I've cleared the top of my plot I've
3:53
cleared quite a bit area of that so I'm
3:55
pleased about that I'm having visions
3:58
now of what I want to do up there for
4:01
next year because I built this area at
4:04
the top of my plot a couple of years ago
4:07
but I've never really used it to its
4:08
full advantage I just used it to make it
4:11
look good to be honest because I'd never
4:13
used it in the 17 years that I'd had the
4:16
allotment so I thought I'm going to get
4:17
it all clear we're going to get it
4:19
designed and then we never planted
4:21
anything in it apart from a few herbs
4:24
but yeah um next year I'm going to get
4:27
all this back area of my plot up to
4:31
looking pretty good and I've got some
4:33
Visions for it I'm thinking like Alpine
4:36
plants up at the top of my plot along
4:39
with more herbs and everything like that
4:42
uh things that are easy to grow and I
4:44
thought alpines will look nice cuz
4:46
they'll just like cover the ground and
4:49
some have flowers on them as well so
4:51
we're going to look for some that I've
4:52
got flowers on and get them all planted
4:55
out so hopefully we're going to have a
4:58
nice new area on my allotment next year
5:01
as I like to invest a bit of money into
5:04
my plot each year and an area that I've
5:08
done up and it's worthwhile if you get
5:10
me so each year I'll spend a bit of
5:12
money on a different area so I'm
5:15
thinking of getting this top area sorted
5:18
once and for all get some alpines in get
5:21
some Paving down sort out the borders
5:25
make it look good and I I know you're
5:28
not meant to spend lots of money on
5:29
allotments but I haven't got a garden so
5:32
I love to see money going into it and it
5:35
looking nice and the less maintenance
5:38
that I have to do on it the better uh
5:40
overall because like this year is
5:42
probably like the first year that I'm
5:44
not having to do much maintenance on my
5:45
plot because it's getting to that
5:47
standard where it's all pretty much good
5:52
looking good and I don't have to do
5:54
anything on it the only Investments I'm
5:56
going to be spending on it over the time
5:57
is to get my Paving done
6:00
because Paving slabs are expensive so
6:02
every year I'm going to be buying a few
6:04
more Paving slabs and eventually it'll
6:06
all be paved and my paths won't get
6:08
muddy or anything like that they'll all
6:10
be nicely paved so that can walk around
6:12
nice and easy most of my plot is
6:14
actually paved all my paths uh I've been
6:17
getting there over the 17 years of
6:19
having the plot whenever anybody's given
6:22
up the allotment and it's empty uh I've
6:25
usually scouted it for Paving slabs
6:30
all the secrets are coming out now shh
6:32
don't tell anyone but yeah Paving slaps
6:34
are expensive they like gold um so if I
6:39
see any Paving slabs I'll have them if
6:40
it's an empty plot if you get me but
6:43
yeah hopefully next year it's going to
6:46
look a bit more better as well uh a bit
6:48
more investment into the top area of my
6:50
plot and making that look good so what
6:53
have we being up to down at the
6:54
allotment this weekend that is what this
6:56
podcast is meant to be about
7:00
I've I've got I've got off on another
7:01
tangent again I always do
7:03
this so this weekend my allotment it has
7:07
been a case of clearing the top of my
7:10
plot which I I have been talking about
7:12
so that is all right so we've cleared
7:16
the top area of a plot we got rid of all
7:19
the leaves what had blown down put them
7:21
into the compost bin leaves will still
7:23
keep blowing down for quite a few weeks
7:25
because there's still loads of leaves on
7:26
at the moment uh but we've cleared all
7:29
that cleared all the bind weed cleared
7:31
all the
7:32
brambles got that all sorted cleared a
7:35
lot of the paths which is a pain cuz I
7:37
am a messy Gardener like I say I'll
7:39
empty my beds but I'll just Chu all the
7:40
weeds on the
7:42
path which is no good for anyone so
7:45
really I should put them into a tub
7:46
straight away and then put them into the
7:48
compost deep but I don't I make life
7:50
difficult and I just Chuck them on the
7:52
path uh then what else did we do we
7:57
potted up my Salvia I've got all all my
7:59
Salvia potted up now they look
8:01
absolutely fantastic uh there were loads
8:04
of flowers on them all on all my cuting
8:06
so I I'll be putting a video out this
8:09
week so make sure you stay tuned for
8:10
that but basically uh I've potted them
8:13
up and I've cut the flowers off to make
8:16
the root system better on it and to
8:19
hopefully push more shoots out on on The
8:23
Cutting what's growing and hopefully
8:25
we'll get some nice bushy plants next
8:27
year so fingers crossed we'll get that s
8:29
Ed we also filled up my bird feeders
8:33
obviously keeping the birds happy got to
8:36
keep the birds happy down at the
8:37
alotment expensive things but the birds
8:40
and the squirrels should I
8:42
say we
8:44
have uh pinched out all my sweet peas a
8:47
video will be coming for that as well we
8:50
have posted up my geraniums a videoos
8:53
coming out for that I'm filming loads of
8:55
videos for you all I hope you're all
8:57
enjoying all these videos and if if
8:59
you're not following my YouTube channel
9:01
do give it a follow because I'm putting
9:02
a lot of time and effort into all my
9:04
YouTube videos and I would like it to
9:07
get monetized eventually uh but it's so
9:09
hard to get YouTube
9:11
monetized um obviously everything that I
9:13
earn from these podcasts and from bits
9:16
and Bobs like that it all goes back into
9:18
my allotment for your videos and for
9:20
your podcasts to show you what I'm doing
9:22
and stuff so it's all worthwhile uh so
9:25
yeah I know there's quite a few adverts
9:27
in these podcasts but like said it all
9:30
goes back into my allotment and it's all
9:32
goes back into the labor of
9:35
it uh what else have we
9:38
done uh that has been pretty much it it
9:42
doesn't sound a lot but it is a lot we
9:44
have spent a lot of time down there this
9:47
weekend and next weekend I'm going to
9:49
get absolutely scratched to death so get
9:52
ready for the pain from that podcast um
9:56
down where all my fruit trees are
9:58
there's a lot of brown BS growing from
10:00
uh my neighbor's plot so I need to prune
10:02
all them back um I won't be able to dig
10:05
them out cuz they're in an awkward spot
10:07
uh but I'll trim them right back to the
10:09
base I do that every year and then by
10:11
the time it comes to next winter they'll
10:13
have growing back again they usually
10:14
last about a year before they get bad
10:16
again so we'll prune them all back and
10:19
chop them all back and then in a few
10:22
weeks when my fruit trees are completely
10:25
bad I'm going to give them a winter wash
10:27
now I don't know if you've heard of a
10:29
win to wash uh you can get it on Amazon
10:32
and basically it is a chemical
10:34
unfortunately um but I spray all my
10:37
fruit trees when they're completely bare
10:40
and it'll stop any insects
10:42
from living in the tree and hatching on
10:45
the tree and stuff like that it just
10:48
gives them uh protection over the winter
10:50
and then I'll do it again in the
10:51
springtime before they start budding up
10:54
and also I'll be getting some um sticky
10:58
tape
10:59
things what you put around the trees uh
11:02
to stop anything from crawling up and
11:04
nesting in the tree like bugs and stuff
11:07
like that so I I I like to put a bit of
11:10
attention into my fruit trees to protect
11:11
them for the year ahead and hopefully I
11:14
stop
11:15
any anything from eating the apples that
11:19
can as there's like something called a
11:21
winter moth or something like that and
11:23
it crawls up the tree and it nests in it
11:25
and it hatches and then it'll like eat
11:27
your fruit and stuff like that so so the
11:30
more I can do to stop stuff getting
11:31
eaten the better really so that's what
11:34
we're going to be doing next week we're
11:36
going to be sorting out my fruit area
11:38
which will be a full weekend's work
11:40
again I usually split it over two days
11:43
uh that'll be my task for the week and
11:45
then I'll do little jobs in between that
11:48
like any that I need to pot up or
11:51
anything that I need to uh sort out a
11:54
path or a bit like that I do a few other
11:56
jobs in between I don't just do that all
11:58
weekend if you get me but that's my main
12:01
project for next weekend I like setting
12:03
myself little project areas to do and
12:06
once I've done them I can tick them off
12:08
I know I don't put too much pressure on
12:11
myself to do a massive area of my
12:13
allotment I I'll say I'll do that chunk
12:15
this weekend I'll do that chunk next
12:17
weekend a bit like that and you get it
12:20
all done eventually and that's the best
12:22
way of doing it you don't want to put
12:23
too much pressure on yourself or it
12:25
becomes a chore and it's not a chore
12:27
it's fun good for the mental health and
12:30
everything like that so I hope you've
12:32
