0:25
and welcome back to gardening with Ben I
0:30
hope you're all okay and I hope you've
0:32
listened to the recent episodes what we
0:34
have uploaded as one of the episodes was
0:37
all the jobs that need doing in March
0:40
and then the other was all the seeds
0:42
that you can plant in March so two very
0:45
important episodes for you to listen to
0:48
and get some tips and advice on what you
0:51
should be doing this month down at the
0:54
alotment or in the garden so as you know
0:57
I'm off work for 4 days so so in the uh
1:01
so in today's episode we're going to be
1:03
talking about what we've been getting up
1:05
to down at the allotment and what we
1:08
have managed to get done down there well
1:12
today it's absolutely chucked it down so
1:14
we've not done
1:15
anything there you go there's the
1:17
episode thanks for listening to
1:19
gardening re Ben only
1:22
joking but no um yesterday was an
1:27
extremely busy day down at the alotment
1:30
it was really
1:33
really a nice day so we got absolutely
1:38
lots and lots done you may have seen on
1:40
my Instagram story and Facebook that I
1:45
have purchased quite a lot more bits and
1:48
Bobs to go on the allotment and to plan
1:51
really because I am looking towards
1:54
Summer now so I'm starting to look at
1:56
what things to plant down at the
1:58
allotment and
2:01
I'd been seeing quite a few Bargains
2:03
here around and everywhere to be honest
2:06
um I'd seen some longera what had been
2:11
reduced to 90 p in my local supermarket
2:16
from2 so I bought three of them whether
2:20
they sprout or not because obviously
2:22
supermarkets don't tend to water them
2:24
and they're in the cardboard boxes so
2:26
they can't get water to them and yeah
2:28
they dry out pretty fast
2:31
so I'm hoping that they are still alive
2:34
what we've done with them is we have put
2:36
them to soak for 24 hours so that they
2:40
can drink the water and hopefully spring
2:43
back to life if they are alive that is
2:46
and to be honest it's longer than 24
2:50
hours that they've been in that water
2:51
because like I say it's been raining
2:52
today so we've not been able to plant
2:55
them and the same goes I've managed to
2:59
by four Victoria plum trees now I've
3:04
talked about my Plum Tree quite a lot in
3:07
these episodes I've had it on the plot
3:09
for now what goes 16 years and I get the
3:13
most beautiful tasty plums from it that
3:17
you've ever tasted so soft so juicy
3:20
tender absolutely
3:23
delicious and I've got one Plum Tree um
3:27
and I've got like a couple of apple
3:28
trees and I thought you know what I'm
3:32
going to get another plum tree for my
3:33
allotment obviously it'll take a few
3:36
years to grow and start bearing fruit
3:39
but we are going to get another plum
3:41
tree so I decided to get two Victoria
3:47
plum trees for my allotment and plant
3:49
them in the new fruit area that I've
3:51
designed this
3:54
year and that we've got going on at the
3:57
moment there's still quite a lot of work
3:59
to do on that fruit new fruit area but
4:02
we wanted to have some trees on it and
4:06
obviously planting fruit trees requires
4:09
four because they are going to be there
4:12
for years to come and you won't be
4:15
obviously digging them up out of the
4:17
ground pretty soon so you need to think
4:20
about where you're going to be planting
4:21
your fruit trees and these Victoria plum
4:24
trees had been reduced from £7 down to2
4:30
£66 so like I said I bought four two for
4:34
myself for my plot and two for my next
4:36
door neighbor's plot because he tasted
4:40
those plums from that tree I won't say
4:42
he tasted my
4:43
plums he tasted those plums from my tree
4:48
and he couldn't get over how tasty they
4:50
were so I've purchased him two fruit
4:53
trees as well to put on his plot and
4:55
hopefully he will be able to plant them
4:57
and get some delicious plums from them
4:59
as
5:00
well so we've got four plum trees
5:03
between us and obviously you you should
5:05
really plant some fruit trees in twos to
5:07
help with pollination and stuff like
5:09
that um so I've got two for myself and
5:13
two for him so again I've put them to
5:16
soak for 24 hours because they've just
5:18
been sat in one of these little bags
5:22
with no water possibly for a month two
5:25
months now so we don't know if they are
5:29
alive
5:30
if they're going to start again start
5:33
growing so we've given them a good good
5:36
drink and again I've not been able to
5:38
plant them today so they're still sat in
5:41
that bucket waiting to be planted
5:43
hopefully we may get them planted
5:45
tomorrow we'll have to see how we get on
5:48
down there but I'm hoping that we do get
5:51
them planted tomorrow we will definitely
5:52
get them planted while I'm off work if
5:55
it's still raining I'll still get them
5:57
planted uh as they do need to go in the
6:00
ground and get growing so yeah I'm
6:03
looking forward to a lot more fruit on
6:05
my plot then we have managed to get some
6:10
red gooseb now I've been talking about
6:13
these in my episodes quite a bit that
6:15
red gooseberries are a lot nicer than
6:18
the green ones because red gooseberries
6:20
are sweet they're not sour and they
6:23
taste absolutely delicious so I've been
6:25
wanting some red Gooseberry bushes for a
6:27
while on my plot we used to have some
6:29
when I first started my allotment years
6:32
ago honk honk I don't know if you could
6:34
hear that um but yeah um we used to have
6:38
some uh on my plot absolutely years
6:43
ago and I've always wanted to get some
6:46
more so we managed to get two from B
6:50
andq so we've got them planted in my new
6:52
fruit area as well so this new fruit
6:55
area is going to be absolutely fantastic
6:57
we've planted obviously my strawberries
7:00
they're all in we've planted
7:04
some um raspberry canes down the side of
7:07
my plot uh which are starting to Bud up
7:11
and take root so they're starting to
7:12
look good so it shows that they're
7:15
taking then we've planted
7:19
our forless black pris down the sides
7:23
which hopefully they will grow and take
7:26
root if they do fantastic I can't wait
7:29
to taste them at least we won't have to
7:31
deal with all the phones on them and get
7:34
prickled as we try to grab some black
7:36
bre so that's going to be good what else
7:40
have we planted down there and I've got
7:44
on order coming in the next few days
7:48
some grapes I've wanted a grape rine for
7:52
my allotment for ages and it's going to
7:55
take a lot of work and a lot of training
7:58
to get a good grip Vine but hopefully we
8:02
do get a fantastic result from it and we
8:05
do get some delicious grapes from it
8:08
because
8:09
of if you grow your own grapes fantastic
8:12
because again they're expensive to buy
8:15
in the shops so hopefully if we can get
8:18
some great gra Vine a good grape vine
8:20
growing and get some delicious grapes
8:23
that will go down a storm with me my
8:27
friends my family and they will
8:29
absolutely love them so it's going to be
8:33
jam-packed the only thing I've not
8:34
managed to get is the yellow raspberries
8:38
which I wanted to get uh so I may have
8:40
to look into getting some of them from
8:42
somewhere else but we'll keep an eye out
8:44
we'll keep his eyes peeled you never
8:46
know we might be able to get some uh so
8:49
yeah it's getting pretty jam-packed my
8:52
plot and after that our next job we have
8:57
planted some Mars summer bulbs now I
9:01
want to grow stuff what will keep coming
9:04
back every single year that you don't
9:06
have to keep growing from seed so
9:10
getting summer bulbs will help in that
9:13
process and hopefully we can get some
9:15
fantastic color from them when they'll
9:17
be reliable and grow good every single
9:20
year so what flowers did we get well we
9:25
have purchased 100 gladioli call ones
9:30
and I've grown gladioli in the past and
9:33
they look absolutely fantastic on the
9:35
allotment so I've bought two packets of
9:38
50 uh so that's 100 all different
9:41
colored ones not the same colors and we
9:45
have filled all my entrance rows with
9:48
gladiola icons so it's going to look
9:51
absolutely stunning in the entrance come
9:54
summer if all those grow and the
9:56
squirrel doesn't pinch them all and we
9:59
will get get some fantastic results down
10:01
there and it's just going to look
10:03
absolutely amazing my plot this year I
10:05
really can't wait to see how well it is
10:08
going to grow and how well it's going to
10:11
get going and the end result uh I'm
10:14
certainly putting a lot of effort into
10:16
getting beautiful flowers this year on
10:18
my allotment uh to attract the bees down
10:21
to my plot and get some fantastic
10:24
results next up after the gladiol eyes
10:26
we got some lily bulbs now I've not
10:30
grown lilies before so I asked my
10:33
followers about Liles because like I say
10:36
I don't know everything so I often go
10:38
back to my followers and ask them
10:42
questions and they said to me to make
10:46
sure that you can get Lily beetle with
10:49
them so I need to look into ways of
10:52
preventing Lily Beetle uh and what Lily
10:54
Beatles do whether they eat the whole
10:56
plants and stuff like that so I need to
10:58
do a bit of research on
11:00
lies and I've planted all them near my
11:04
entrance as well so that they'll get a
11:06
nice strong whift of Lies as I walk onto
11:09
my plot and hopefully we'll get some
11:12
beautiful flowers from them I'll just
11:14
have to make sure I don't knock them or
11:16
I'll keep getting stained from the
11:18
pollen on them but
11:20
yeah I can't wait to have the lilies
11:23
growing on my
11:24
plot and then we have got two packs of
11:30
Summer bulbs mixed summer bulbs and in
11:33
those mixed summer bulbs are some more
11:36
gladiola IC corns so I've got even more
11:40
gladiol eyes um my plot is going to be
11:44
absolutely packed with gladiol eyes this
11:47
year uh but hopefully it will make it
11:50
look nice and it'll make it look
11:51
attractive so we might get some nice
11:54
color from them so we'll have I'll
11:56
definitely be sharing lots and lots of
11:58
pictures come summertime if those
12:00
gladiol eyes all do pop up because the
12:03
the show's going to be absolutely
12:06
fantastic then please do forgive me if I
12:09
don't say some of these names right like
12:12
you like I always say I'm not very good
12:14
at pronouncing flower names so then we
12:18
have got some in this summer bulb
12:20
collection we've got 15 and animate
12:24
Blues so they do look nice on the
12:27
picture then we've got 30 ox
12:32
oxus and they're like a pinky color so
12:35
they'll certainly look nice we've got
12:37
two daia cacti a white stroke pink one
12:43
so again daas they do fantastic they
12:46
always look good and always look
12:49
nice and we've got
12:52
30
12:55
tiia
12:57
tra I don't know how to say that at all
12:59
I really am not good at saying these
13:01
words but we've got 30 of them alt
13:04
together there's 100 bulbs in these
13:06
summer flower collections so again we've
13:09
been filling the borders up and getting
13:11
all them bulbs and corns planted down
13:16
the sides of my borders of my main plot
13:19
so yeah it's going to look good if all
13:22
this does grow so we've planted all them
13:26
and what I've done as well in these
13:28
borders is is I filled them up with all
13:31
the old compost what I whenever I've got
13:35
old compost I just Chuck it all into a
13:38
wheelie bin and put it all in there and
13:40
I've got a wheelie bin full of compost
13:43
so I've just been filling these beds up
13:46
with all the old compost obviously it'll
13:49
still do the ground good because it's
13:51
got some food in it and stuff like that
13:53
and it'll improve the soil content but
13:55
yeah we've filled all these borders back
13:58
up with compost so they all look really
14:00
nice and neat at the moment I've posted
14:02
a picture today on my Instagram of some
14:05
of the borders that are filled back up
14:07
with compost and they do look a lot
14:09
nicer than the soil looks so yeah
14:13
hopefully we do get some fantastic
14:16
blooms in there and as well as all the
14:20
bulbs what I'm planting we are going to
14:22
be planting a lot of flowers as well I'm
14:25
growing lots and lots of flowers from
14:27
seed I've talked about all the SE flower
14:29
seeds that I've purchased in one of my
14:31
episodes recently and shared that with
14:34
you so if you've not listened to that
14:36
episode make sure you do go and have a
14:38
listen to it and see what all the
14:40
flowers are what I'm growing this year
14:42
so we need to look start looking soon at
14:44
starting them flower seeds because some
14:47
do need a long time to get going and get
14:50
growing so I need to find out where I've
14:52
put my bag of flower seeds if you like
14:54
me you'll put things away and then you
14:56
never find them again until year after
14:59
I I did that when I moved out uh I
15:02
realized how many packets of seeds I'd
15:05
put away and then when I came here I
15:07
realized blim me I've got all these
15:09
seeds uh to sort out but hopefully I
15:13
know where I've put them and we can get
15:15
those flower seeds started because I
15:17
really do need to get things moving
15:19
along now we've got all the sweet peas
15:23
to get going and get them growing
15:25
because I want to make a spectacle of
15:28
them as well this year
15:29
as well as the gladiol I want a good
15:32
display of sweet peas on my plot as I
15:36
know they're fantastic and easy to grow
15:38
once you get them growing so we want a
15:41
good result from them this
15:43
year so yeah and then obviously I've
15:46
been down to the allotment today and I
15:48
said it's been absolutely chucking it
15:50
down which it has it was awful down on
15:53
the plot but we have been working in the
15:56
shed today and I'm trying to do some
15:59
improvements in there there's a lot left
16:01
to do uh don't get me wrong but we are
16:04
doing improvements week on week down
16:06
there at the moment and what we've been
16:08
doing is we have rebuilding started
16:12
rebuilding some of the shelves in the
16:14
shed because they've been up quite a few
16:16
years now some of the uh shelves and I'm
16:19
starting to make some new shelving and
16:22
hopefully make the shelving a lot bigger
16:24
so that we can put more plants on this
16:25
shelving and hopefully get some fantas
16:28
fantastic flowers and uh vegetables grow
16:32
because I need to get it all tidy and
16:34
Ship Shape ready for starting these
16:35
seeds off and once I've started them all
16:38
off then we can go full steam ahead and
16:42
get our allotment jammed packed to the
16:45
rafters making the most of every
16:49
available bit of space on the plot so
16:53
make sure you do follow me over these
16:55
next few weeks because it's going to be
16:57
one hell of a it's going to be very busy
17:00
down at the alment so make sure you
17:02
follow in my Facebook and my Instagram
17:04
and you'll be able to stay tuned with
17:06
everything that I get up to down there
17:08
cuz I do like sharing lots and lots of
17:11
pictures with you all so yeah I hope
17:15
that you have a fantastic weekend and I
17:17
hope that you
17:19
have plenty to do it looks like it might
17:22
rain tomorrow fingers crossed it doesn't
17:24
rain cuz I want to be outside in the
17:26
garden tomorrow I don't want to be stuck
17:27
in the shed for a second day running
17:30
I've still got lots to do in the shed
17:31
don't get me wrong but I would much
17:33
rather be outside getting things done
17:36
because we've also got a repair tape for
17:39
the polytonal come so that I can get
17:42
that up and fastened back together again
17:45
and repaired because like I said we're
17:47
going to be going full steam ahead with
17:49
growing in the polyol again this year
17:51
last year we didn't grow anything due to
17:53
not having enough time uh so I'm going
17:55
to be growing some tomatoes some chilies
18:00
some cucumber some peppers and also
18:03
we're going to be growing melons down on
18:05
the allotment this year so I'm looking
18:07
forward to sharing that with you all and
18:09
getting some great results from the
18:12
melons because we are going to put a lot
18:14
of time and effort into growing them
18:15
melons and hopefully get the results and
18:18
some melons from the plants but we'll
18:21
have to wait and see uh I'll have to
18:22
share with you what melon seeds I've
18:24
purchased to try growing so we'll have
18:26
to have a good that and hopefully
18:30
like I said hopefully we'll get some
18:31
melons down at the
18:33
allotment so I hope you have a great

weekend everybody until next time
