This video explains important seasonal gardening tasks that help plants and soil cope with cooler conditions. I cover clearing beds, improving soil, pruning, and simple protection methods that support healthy growth. It is helpful for gardeners wanting a clear plan for maintaining a productive garden as temperatures begin to drop.

essential autumn and fall jobs to do in
0:03
your gardens and a lotments that you
0:04
can't ignore and that you need to do
0:07
during autumn. Welcome to Gardening with
0:10
Ben. In this video, we're going to be
0:11
explaining all the tasks what need to be
0:13
done and not ignored this autumn winter
0:16
period. Now is the perfect time to be
0:18
doing lots of jobs and getting a head
0:21
start ready for next year's growing
0:23
season. A lot of stuff isn't growing in
0:25
the a lotment and garden at this time of
0:27
year and it's now a perfect time to get
0:29
cracking and get on with those main jobs
0:33
and maintenance ready for next year. So
0:36
the first thing what you need to be
0:38
doing in your a lotment and garden is
0:40
clear out any dead plants and weeds. Now
0:43
a lot of the vegetation may be dying
0:44
back or the old vegetables or the old
0:47
flowers. Dig them out, stick them on
0:49
your compost heap and get the beds
0:51
cleared. And the same goes for weeds.
0:53
Get out as many weeds and roots as
0:56
possible during the autumn period as
0:58
during the winter, not much weeding will
1:01
be needed to be done. So the quicker you
1:03
get it done, the quicker that you can
1:05
sit back and relax during the winter
1:07
period. If only it was that simple. But
1:10
yeah, get as much weeds out as possible,
1:12
especially the roots, because getting
1:14
the roots out now, it'll stop them from
1:16
growing in the springtime and it won't
1:19
be as big a job come next year.
1:22
If you've not already, plant your
1:24
garlic, your onions, and your shallots.
1:27
Now, I've got garlic in at the moment.
1:29
I've got onions in. I've got shelots in,
1:31
and they're all sprouting already.
1:33
They're really doing well down here at
1:35
the a lotment. Make sure that you net
1:36
them because the birds and the squirrels
1:38
do love to pull them out when they see
1:40
the green shoots popping through. So,
1:42
just make sure you net them and keep
1:43
them in the ground. If they do come out,
1:45
just pop them back in and hopefully they
1:47
will take. And remember to keep them
1:49
watered if it's a dry period during the
1:52
autumn. But so far we've had lots of
1:54
rain, which is good for down at the a
1:56
lotment. And again, if you've not
1:58
planted any spring bulbs at your a
2:00
lotment or in your garden, get some
2:02
planted. Uh I am an advocate for
2:05
planting spring bulbs at my a lotment. I
2:08
drone on about it all the time. You
2:09
might say, "Yes, shut up, Ben." But no,
2:11
I plant loads of spring bulbs because in
2:14
the springtime when the bees wake up
2:16
from hibernation, they're the first
2:17
flowers that are around and they need
2:20
the nectar and the pollen to give them
2:22
the food and the energy to get started
2:24
for the year ahead. So attracting the
2:26
bees and looking after them will help
2:27
you beneficially because when the spring
2:29
wolves come out, your fruit trees will
2:31
start to be blossoming and it'll attract
2:34
them to help pollinate the blossom on
2:36
the fruit trees which will encourage
2:38
more fruit on your plants. So, it's a
2:40
win-win situation and it looks
2:42
absolutely gorgeous having spring bulbs
2:45
when there's not much color around. It's
2:47
a great addition to the a lotment.
2:49
Next up is clean your tools and your
2:51
greenhouse and your poly tunnel. Now,
2:54
cleaning your tools is not something
2:55
that I enjoy doing, but it's good to
2:57
clean them down if you're not using them
2:59
during the winter period, especially
3:00
like your secretaries. Oil them up, give
3:02
them a good clean down, and hopefully
3:04
they'll last another year longer. Don't
3:07
leave them out in your a lotment like I
3:08
usually do. store them away in your shed
3:11
and keep them secure over the winter
3:14
period. Now you poly on your greenhouse,
3:16
disinfect it down, give it a good scrub
3:19
down, give it a good wash down as
3:22
there's a lot of diseases what hang
3:24
around whether you've had tomato blight
3:26
or potato blight if you've had them in
3:28
your polyon or greenhouse. Give them a
3:30
good wash down. Those diseases hang
3:32
around. So the better you clean it, the
3:34
better you get on with it like really
3:36
good. Give it a good scrub down. just
3:38
use an antibacterial
3:40
uh spray and it will do its job and keep
3:44
the diseases free.
3:46
Next up is lift tender plants. Now, if
3:50
you got any tender plants like I've got
3:52
deraniums in my a lotment and I want to
3:53
keep them for next year. Yes, you can
3:55
keep deraniums year after year. If you
3:57
dig them up, put them in your poly
3:58
tunnel or your greenhouse where it's a
4:00
bit warmer. keep them alive and they
4:02
will grow again next year and give you
4:05
more flowers and maybe bigger plants as
4:07
well. So, lift up any tender plants and
4:10
look after them until next year. The
4:12
same goes for non-H hardy fuchsia. Make
4:14
sure you dig them up and move them into
4:16
your poly tunnel as well.
4:19
Protect any pots from plants. If you've
4:21
got any like non-h hardy plants, bring
4:24
your pots into your poly tunnel, use
4:26
fleas, protect them, and they again will
4:29
come back next year.
4:31
Now, look after the birds during the
4:34
winter period. I know it's an expense.
4:35
We a lot of people don't have much money
4:37
these days, but if you have got a bit of
4:39
spare change, buy some bird feeders, buy
4:42
some cheap seed, hang them up in your
4:44
gardens, and look after them birds. Now,
4:46
I've got birdhouses on my a lotment. And
4:48
come springtime, the blue tits move in.
4:50
They absolutely love it. So, if you've
4:52
got any birdhouses in your a lotment and
4:54
garden, clear them out. They need
4:56
cleaning out. Disinfect them. The birds
4:59
won't move in. if they know there's been
5:01
signs of anything living in them. So,
5:03
clean them out now, especially if
5:05
there's like spiders in them and webs or
5:07
old nests in them. Clean them out ready
5:09
for next year. Hang them back up and
5:12
hopefully you will get some blue tits or
5:14
birds living in them. So, those are the
5:16
essential tips what I'm sharing with you
5:19
today. I hope you found them useful.
5:20
Until next time everyone, remember keep
5:23
smiling, keep shining and keep gardening
5:25
with Ben everyone.
