This video explains the essential gardening tasks to complete in autumn to prepare plants and soil for colder weather.
I cover maintenance work, plant care, and simple preparation steps that protect plants, improve soil condition, and make the next growing season easier and more productive.
Helpful for gardeners wanting a clear plan for seasonal garden care.

jobs to do in your a lotment in
0:02
September. Well, yes, we're now in
0:05
September and it's the weekend. So, what
0:07
jobs can we do this weekend down at the
0:10
a lotment? Well, things will start dying
0:12
off now. And I've noticed that the
0:15
pumpkins are dying off. They're early
0:17
this year as well as obviously the sweet
0:20
corns being early. So, obviously look at
0:23
harvesting your pumpkins. You know that
0:25
the pumpkins are ready. If the stems
0:27
have gone brown on them, that means that
0:29
they're ready to harvest and obviously
0:32
they're ripe as well. So that is when
0:34
you harvest your pumpkins. Obviously
0:37
harvest the rest of your sweet corn if
0:39
it's ready. And also start looking at
0:43
your eating apples and your pears as
0:46
they will start to get ready. Mine
0:48
aren't quite so ready yet. They're still
0:50
not big brilliantly yet. So I'm waiting
0:53
for them to swell up for a bit. We've
0:55
had some really
0:58
harsh rain here and hopefully that will
1:01
make them swell and get a bit bigger.
1:03
But you know when apples and pears are
1:05
ready as you'll just like lift them and
1:07
they'll just snap off the branch. That
1:09
is when they're ready. You shouldn't
1:10
have to pull them off the branch to
1:13
harvest your apples or your pears. That
1:15
is when you know when they are ready. So
1:19
also start doing that. Obviously,
1:22
people's tomato plants may start dying
1:24
off in like poly tunnels and green
1:26
houses. Once they've finished and they
1:28
start dying off, take them out, put them
1:30
in your compost pile, get off any old
1:33
tomatoes, and yeah, harvest all them
1:36
because you don't want to be leaving
1:37
them in the greenhouse because that can
1:38
cause diseases for next year. So, you
1:40
want to get the plants out of there as
1:42
fast as possible. Start looking at your
1:45
spring bulbs everywhere that you go at
1:47
the moment. You'll see spring bulbs
1:49
everywhere. You'll see them in shops.
1:50
You'll see them in garden centers.
1:52
You'll see them online. They're all
1:54
advertising spring bulbs, but don't
1:55
plant them yet. You can buy them, but
1:58
obviously store them somewhere dry and
2:00
cool. And don't plant them till end of
2:04
October, November time. That is usually
2:07
the best time to start planting your
2:09
spring bulbs. So, don't get carried away
2:11
and don't start planting them yet. Also
2:14
start looking at getting your garlic and
2:16
your winter onion sets as they're all
2:20
available in the garden centers now.
2:22
I've just been and bought my garlic and
2:24
I've ordered my onions.
2:26
We'll be planting them towards the end
2:28
of September, but use the next few weeks
2:31
in starting to prepare the beds. Build
2:33
your beds if you need to build them. If
2:35
you need to construct them, get some
2:37
manure in there. Start getting that
2:39
rotting down for a bit and get some feed
2:42
in there cuz all the summer plants will
2:44
have used a lot of the nutrition in the
2:46
ground. And yeah, get them get the food
2:49
back into the ground ready for growing
2:51
this winter time for the garlic and the
2:54
onions. You need to plant your garlic
2:56
around October, November time because it
2:59
needs the cold weather to help develop
3:01
the garlic bulbs to get them to
3:05
create the clove itself. So it needs the
3:09
cold weather. You don't grow them
3:10
through the summer. You grow them
3:11
through the winter. And then usually
3:13
they're ready around June time. So that
3:16
is your task for this weekend. Everyone
3:18
get looking at getting some garlic to
3:20
grow. If you're new to a lotments and
3:22
you've got a
3:25
a lotment what's covered in weeds, get
3:27
that area sorted and then at least
3:29
you're growing something to start over
3:31
the winter while you concentrate on
3:33
clearing down the rest of your plot over
3:35
the winter months. I don't grow much
3:37
myself through the winter. I grow my
3:39
Christmas potatoes. I grow my um garlic.
3:43
I grow my winter onions and possibly
3:45
some shallots as well. So that is all I
3:48
tend to grow through the winter period.
3:50
So if that's what you want to get done
3:51
this weekend, write them jobs down and
3:54
join along with me as I get ready for
3:56
winter myself as I start clearing all my
3:58
plot, getting it all tidied, and getting
4:00
it rebuilt ready for next year's season.
4:03
