previous episodes sit back grab a brew
0:21
and let's enjoy today's
0:25
episode hello everyone and welcome back
0:27
to gardening with Ben
0:30
well it's Tuesday now and we are on our
0:35
last day at work before we go back to
0:37
the allotment on Wednesday and hopefully
0:40
get lots of work done down there and
0:43
obviously when I'm back down at the plot
0:45
I'll be able to talk about what I've
0:46
been up to down there so when I'm not at
0:49
the plot we talk about different topics
0:51
and different subjects about
0:54
gardening and just share with you stuff
0:56
that we know uh what I've learned from
0:58
over the years and what I enjoy doing
1:01
down at the allotment and yeah I've also
1:05
got another podcast if you've not
1:06
listened to it already it's called
1:09
gardening and allotment tips the link is
1:12
in the description of this podcast so go
1:15
and subscribe to that one and listen to
1:18
that as well cuz there's over 40
1:19
episodes on there for you to listen to
1:22
and each episode we talk about something
1:24
different a different topic to do with
1:26
gardening and allotment uh where I just
1:29
share different tips and advice really
1:31
so yeah it's not really about talking
1:33
about what I get up to on the plot but
1:35
it's about sharing allotment and
1:37
gardening tips and quite a lot of people
1:39
are enjoying that one so make sure you
1:41
head over to that one after you've
1:43
listened to this one though and click
1:45
subscribe and listen to some of those
1:47
episodes as well plenty to keep you
1:49
going on these miserable winter days
1:51
until the springtime comes So today
1:55
we're going to talk about gardening
1:57
tools and allotment tools
2:00
because there's a lot of a lot of new
2:03
people out there that are starting to
2:04
garden and it's hard to know what type
2:09
of gardening tools you you need to get
2:12
really and it can be quite expensive to
2:15
buy gardening tools for the allotment
2:17
and for the garden um it can be and once
2:21
you get addicted to buying gardening
2:22
tools then it can become expensive and
2:26
very uh costly uh probably more than you
2:31
actually would spend on going to the
2:33
supermarket and purchasing the
2:34
vegetables
2:35
yourself but yeah uh you can certainly
2:38
get addicted to gardening tools but if
2:41
you're new to gardening and you've not
2:43
got a big
2:45
budget and you want to just get started
2:47
in gardening the best advice I can give
2:51
is to go to somewhere like a charity
2:55
shop or a car boot sale a car boot sale
2:58
is absolutely fantastic for gardening
3:00
tools uh because when you go to these
3:03
car boot sales and stuff like that
3:05
people are just like trying to empty all
3:08
the stuff out that they don't actually
3:10
need and half of times they've been in
3:13
the shed and they've just emptied the
3:14
shed and took it with them to the car
3:16
boots
3:17
because sometimes these gardening tools
3:21
they can be like fads uh it's like when
3:24
a new cookery item comes out like a new
3:28
blender type I it for everything and you
3:32
end up purchasing it and using it for
3:34
months and then you suddenly stop using
3:36
it uh gardening tools sometimes can be
3:39
like that if there's a new gardening
3:40
tool what's come out um so more often
3:44
than not you'll be able to pick up some
3:46
real good Bargains at car boot sales and
3:49
get them a lot cheaper than they would
3:51
actually be if you were to purchase them
3:53
from a garden center um but there's so
3:56
many good gardening tools out there
3:58
obviously if you're starting in alotment
4:00
the main gardening tools which you will
4:03
need is obviously a fork uh for digging
4:07
over the soil a
4:10
spade is not necessarily needed you only
4:14
need a spade if you're going to be using
4:15
it for digging really if you're going to
4:17
be planting stuff uh I don't use my
4:20
Spade much hardly at all um hardly ever
4:24
use my Spar to be
4:26
honest uh the fork is what what I use
4:30
the most out everything every time when
4:33
I'm at the alotment I'll always use my
4:34
Fork uh
4:36
and the other two main ones are a hand
4:40
Trel which is like a small Spade
4:43
obviously but in your hand and I use
4:45
that obviously for planting bulbs for
4:48
planting seeds planting plants and stuff
4:51
like that so and you can pick them up
4:53
pretty pretty well cheap uh obviously
4:56
the more you pay for them the longer
4:57
they will last because some are cheap
5:00
metal and they'll just snap after a bit
5:03
uh so you don't want sometimes you need
5:05
to pay that little bit extra to get good
5:07
quality tools but if you've got
5:09
something just to last you at a year or
5:12
so fantastic and as long as you look
5:15
after them and keep them rust free they
5:17
will last a long
5:19
time and obviously the better handles on
5:21
them will help them last longer and then
5:25
a hand Fork as well uh I'm always with
5:28
my hand Fork because I use that mainly
5:31
for doing all my weeding with um
5:34
fantastic tool and you don't always need
5:38
your big fork to get in between plants
5:40
your little hand fork or just get in
5:43
between them and dig all the stones out
5:44
dig all the little Roots out what are
5:46
growing and you can pick them out pretty
5:48
much easily enough um best tool ever and
5:53
even a kitchen Fork sometimes if you're
5:56
just wanting to uh do a little bit of
5:59
weeding in between plants a Kitchen Fort
6:01
comes in fantastic down at the alotment
6:04
I've always got a kitchen Fork down
6:06
there um I would say don't tell my
6:08
parents but I live at live on my own now
6:11
so it doesn't really matter uh where
6:13
I've got the kitchen Fork
6:15
from but yeah definitely wouldn't be
6:17
without a kitchen FK and obviously the
6:20
garden hoe the garden hoe is fantastic
6:23
if you were to go around all your beds
6:26
once a week and just give them a ho that
6:28
you will keep on top of the week
6:30
totally uh I always don't do manage to
6:33
do it but I should do if you just go
6:36
around for 10 minutes just go around
6:38
every bed and ho around it that will
6:41
keep on top of the weeds and you will be
6:43
weed free all through summer trust me uh
6:47
there used to be a chap who were retired
6:49
on our alotment site and his onion beds
6:52
were absolutely pristin cuz he used to
6:54
go down and just home every day um they
6:57
were literally fantastic you wouldn't SP
6:59
a single weed in his beds uh it was
7:02
something to really look at and Inspire
7:05
to him so we've got that um and then
7:09
obviously you can get your posher tools
7:13
which are ones like from Wolf Garten and
7:16
I've got a few tools myself from Wolf
7:18
Garten and the best thing about getting
7:21
wolf Garten tools is that once you've
7:24
got a handle you can if people are
7:28
wanting to give you stuff for birthdays
7:30
or for Christmas or anniversaries you
7:32
can just ask for a different head to fit
7:34
onto that handle each birthday and
7:37
Christmas and you'll never grow short of
7:40
getting gardening tools for celebrations
7:43
because there's about 50 different
7:45
Garden heads to fit onto this
7:49
um pole what you use uh to attach it to
7:53
the handle um once you've got your
7:55
handle it's just a case of finding the
7:57
different heads that you need and the
7:59
best about that is you can just take
8:00
with you the heads to the allotment
8:03
whenever you need them certain heads for
8:05
the allotment because you can leave your
8:07
handle down there cuz nobody's going to
8:09
pinch the handle but if you were to
8:11
leave the actual tools down there people
8:13
would pinch them and you never want to
8:15
leave your allotment tools on your
8:16
allotment even if you've got a shared a
8:18
greenhouse do not leave tools at the
8:21
allotment because they will get pinched
8:23
even if they're cheap it encourages
8:25
people to come down and pinch them so
8:27
don't leave anything valuable down there
8:29
whatsoever uh you don't want no
8:32
opportunities um so yeah and I've got
8:36
this fantastic one which is it cost me
8:39
£40 to buy this head fitted but it's
8:43
like a
8:45
small cultivator and it's got a hoe on
8:49
it as well and you just grind it into
8:51
the soil and it chops it all up and it
8:53
gets pulls all the boots up and
8:55
everything it's fantastic I've shared a
8:58
video of it on my YouTube YouTube
8:59
channel before um but yeah it's one of
9:03
the best tools that you can get and wolf
9:06
carton offer you about a 10e guarantee
9:09
on your tools so if you have any that
9:12
break they'll replace them so you can't
9:15
get better than them so if you're
9:18
looking at garden tools have a look
9:20
around let me know which one's your
9:23
favorite garden tools send me a message
