Raspberry Reset. Welcome to Gardening
0:02
with Ben. And today we're going to be
0:04
talking about raspberries. One of my
0:06
favorite things that I love growing down
0:07
here. Now, the only issue with
0:09
raspberries is that they can be worse
0:11
than a weed. And how I mean that is that
0:14
the roots travel all over the place. And
0:16
you'll find raspberry canes popping up
0:18
where you don't want them and
0:19
everywhere. So, if you're wanting to
0:21
keep them contained, grow them in a pot
0:24
and then the roots won't go grow
0:26
everywhere. But if you're not bothered
0:27
like me on the a lotment, put some in
0:30
down the side of your plot or somewhere
0:32
where you can try and keep them
0:33
contained and yeah, you can plant them
0:37
where you need them to. And where they
0:39
if they do pop up where you don't want
0:40
them to, usually they are pretty easy to
0:43
pull out if you've got a bit of strength
0:44
behind you. But yeah, raspberries are
0:47
great to have. Now, what I mean by
0:49
raspberry reset is that there's two
0:52
varieties of raspberries. There's a
0:54
summer variety and there's an autumn
0:56
variety. Obviously, the summer ones are
0:57
ready in the summer and the autumn ones
0:59
are ready in the autumn. However,
1:02
pruning comes different for both of them
1:04
and this can be confusing. So, you need
1:07
to know what variety of raspberries you
1:11
the way that you sometimes
1:14
can tell is that the summer varieties
1:18
grow on the previous year's growth. So,
1:22
if you've got a load of new canes, what
1:23
have grown this year, what haven't
1:25
produced, they will grow the raspberries
1:30
And the ones that had raspberries on
1:31
last year, they will have probably died
1:34
back now, the canes. So, those are the
1:36
ones that you prune down. So, summer
1:38
varieties, you prune the ones that have
1:40
had the raspberries on and the new
1:42
growth will produce the raspberries this
1:45
year. Now, autumn variety of
1:47
raspberries, you just cut them all down.
1:50
you prune them all to the ground and
1:52
they will grow new growth this year and
1:54
they'll grow the raspberries on them. So
1:56
that is why you need to know which
1:57
variety they are because if you prune
1:59
all your summer ones down that have
2:00
produced new growth last year, they
2:03
won't get any raspberries on them till
2:05
the year after. So yeah, you need to
2:08
know what variety of raspberry they are
2:11
so that you get some great crops from
2:13
them. Now raspberries are absolutely
2:15
amazing. They're so expensive in the
2:17
shops to buy. So, if you can grow them
2:19
yourself, it's an absolute bonus. Now,
2:22
there's uh red ones and there's yellow
2:26
ones as well. One called autumn gold.
2:28
So, if it's a yellow one, you know it's
2:30
the autumn variety as well. So, that's
2:32
one way of telling as well. So, yeah.
2:36
Who is growing raspberries on here? I've
2:38
had raspberries on my plot since I
2:40
actually first got it 20 years ago. And
2:43
we're getting great crops every single
2:45
year. And they're great to add in with
2:47
your strawberries cuz they're ready
2:49
around strawberry times some of them.
2:51
And yeah, they're a great addition to
2:53
your fruit bowl as well. So, I hope you
2:56
found them tips useful, knowing which
2:58
ones to prune and which ones not to
2:59
prune. So until next time everyone
3:01
remember keep smiling, keep shining and
3:04
keep gardening with Ben everyone.
