1:15
episode hello everyone and welcome to a
1:18
brand new episode of gardening with Ben
1:22
we're Ben and this is your podcast well
1:25
it's now the 1 of July and summer is
1:29
here apparently if that's what the
1:31
weather forecast people are saying we've
1:33
been having hot spells we've been having
1:35
cold spells we've been having downpours
1:38
we've had some Hailstone and yeah I'm
1:40
surprised we've not had no snow mind you
1:42
up in Scotland they've had snow so yeah
1:45
you never know what we'll have this
1:47
month but hopefully we'll have some
1:50
warmer weather but this past week that
1:53
we have had a little Heatwave here and
1:56
yeah it certainly boosted things along
1:59
and in this episode we're going to be
2:00
talking about what we've done in June
2:03
and how well we've got on how badly
2:06
we've got on the things we've harvested
2:08
and what our plans are for July
2:11
tomorrow's episode we'll be talking all
2:14
about what to start what jobs to do in
2:17
the allotment and Garden in July so make
2:20
sure you stay tuned for that episode as
2:22
we'll be talking about that
2:24
one so I haven't recorded a few episodes
2:28
for a while uh I've been extremely busy
2:31
in the background still working on
2:33
gardening with Ben and yeah I'm trying
2:36
to sort of brand new website out and get
2:39
things up and running on that as I'm
2:42
wanting to do like daily
2:44
newsletters and daily tips and advice
2:48
I've been trying a few of those out on
2:49
Instagram at the moment you may have
2:50
seen them so yes stay tuned for lots
2:53
more content coming along so I'm trying
2:56
to get this website up and running as
2:58
fast as possible so so that I can start
3:00
getting the tips and advice out on a
3:03
daily basis to you through my website
3:04
and through newsletters as well so stay
3:07
tuned
3:09
for you to sign up to get the
3:11
newsletters on a daily basis I will soon
3:14
be sharing that link with you
3:17
all so June down at the allotment what
3:20
have we been up to well obviously we
3:23
went and visited Gardener's world we
3:25
went to Gardener world it was absolutely
3:28
fantastic and it is too big to walk
3:31
around in one day while even I get tired
3:34
from all the walking around it is a
3:37
massive area cuz it's BBC good food as
3:39
well as obviously BBC Gardener world so
3:43
there's so much to see so much to taste
3:45
so much to buy and yeah we came away
3:48
with quite a few things we came away
3:50
with a lot of Futures we came away with
3:52
some Salvia they're all now planted in
3:54
my garden and they're growing really
3:56
well I'm pleased that they've all taken
3:59
I not had non die on me yet that is a
4:02
success in itself so yeah I'm hoping the
4:05
fuches takee because the fuches that are
4:07
bought are bushy varieties so they'll
4:10
grow nice and big fill in the gaps and
4:13
hopefully make it look attractive and
4:16
welcoming to the bees as well so that
4:18
the bees come down and enjoy them so
4:21
we've got all them planted we've also
4:24
obviously been doing lots and lots of
4:25
weeding there's always weeding to be
4:27
done at the allotment but we've been
4:29
doing that
4:30
we've also been busy harvesting yes
4:34
we've started harvesting our produce
4:36
today I harvested my potatoes and they
4:40
look absolutely delicious I didn't get
4:42
as many as I thought as I'd hoped to
4:45
have got but I think that's down to me
4:46
not watering them as much as I should
4:48
have done if i' have watered them more
4:50
we probably would have got a bigger crop
4:52
but yeah we've got a decent crop from
4:54
them I've shared that picture on
4:56
Instagram and Facebook if you've not
4:58
seen it check them out guys in with Ben
5:00
and you'll be able to see what potatoes
5:02
I've got I'm just looking forward to
5:03
cooking them now and trying them that's
5:05
the best thing to do I don't know
5:07
whether to try air frying them or
5:09
boiling them that is the question so
5:11
we'll see we'll give them a try I've got
5:13
one of these Choppers as well what you
5:15
put in it and it just slices it up into
5:18
pieces as well so it might be nice in
5:20
the air fryer but we'll have a look at
5:22
them and try out some different recipes
5:24
with them and I'll let you know how we
5:26
get on with them I'm not a chef but I'll
5:29
Google things and have a look and give
5:31
things a try it's always worth trying
5:34
new
5:35
things so we've harvested this potatoes
5:37
we've harvested peas we've harvested
5:40
some peas and they are absolutely
5:42
delicious they're so scrumptious and
5:45
nice and tasty juicy succulent peas
5:49
absolutely gorgeous we've still got
5:51
absolutely loads left to pick but these
5:54
ones are swelled up and they got to the
5:55
right size so I picked them off before
5:57
they got too big because then will not
6:00
be as juicy just be rock hard so you
6:02
need to make sure you pick them at the
6:04
optimum time if you're picking your peas
6:06
don't wait until they're all ready pick
6:07
the ones that are ready and use them as
6:10
and when they're ready so that you can
6:12
have some delicious peas with your
6:14
potatoes as well so yeah we'll be having
6:17
the Sunday dinner soon we've also
6:19
harvested some lettuce we've been
6:21
growing Iceberg lettu uses they've got a
6:23
nice fantastic head on them absolutely
6:26
delicious and crunchy and yeah not many
6:29
slugs hiding in it either which is a
6:30
good thing as sometimes you get slugs
6:33
hiding in the iceberg head itself when
6:36
you're unwrapping the leaves you find
6:37
little slugs hiding and bugs and stuff
6:39
like that so you've always got to be
6:40
careful make sure you wash them
6:42
thoroughly and they're looking
6:45
absolutely delicious as well we've had
6:47
strawberries
6:48
off again not too many this year I've
6:51
not doing very well with my strawberries
6:53
I don't know why but we've not had a
6:55
good crop of strawberries this year
6:56
hopefully fingers cross will have more
6:58
next year and we'll plant loads more
7:00
plants from the runners what are
7:02
starting to come off them now we've had
7:05
Logan berries first year having logen
7:07
barries off on my plot uh my dad gave me
7:10
some canes off his allotment and they're
7:13
easy to take cuttings from locen barries
7:15
if you got a whip growing out all you do
7:17
is shove the end in the soil while it's
7:19
still attached it'll grow roots on it
7:21
and then you can just snip it off and
7:23
there you go you have a Loganberry plant
7:25
but the Logan berries will grow on the
7:28
cane what grew the previous previous
7:29
year so you might not get some in the
7:31
first year you'll probably get them on
7:33
the second year so this is the second
7:35
year that I've got them in and yeah
7:38
hopefully we're going to get a load more
7:41
ra Logan Bears ready in the coming weeks
7:43
because we've got so many on there
7:45
they're like weighing down the Plant
7:46
they're snapping the branches but
7:48
hopefully we'll get some delicious Logan
7:50
berries off and I've been fastening them
7:52
up all the new canes what are grow ready
7:54
for next year so fingers crossed will
7:56
have even more next year on the plants
7:58
and you never know we might start making
8:01
some Loganberry Jam
8:03
soon I've harvested more rhubarb
8:06
absolutely loads of rhubarb the plants
8:08
are starting to die off a bit now so I
8:09
wanted to pick the rhubarb before it all
8:12
died back and yeah I gave it all to my
8:15
mom usually she makes me about five
8:17
crumbles with but this lot made me eight
8:19
crumbles in Little Boxes she packs them
8:22
up in Little Boxes gives me some custard
8:25
and I'm set for puddings for the week
8:27
ahead so hopefully might get some more
8:30
rhubarb off we'll have to keep watering
8:31
it and keep it growing hopefully fingers
8:34
crossed cuz we do want some more rhubarb
8:36
crumbles and then it'll be on to the
8:38
like apple crumbles coming up soon but
8:40
the apples are way off from picking so
8:43
we've got to keep the rubab going for
8:44
the time being so that we get some more
8:46
rubal crumbles off we've also harvested
8:49
our garlic this week I didn't know this
8:52
this was something I learn the past week
8:55
I actually picked it on the longest day
8:57
of the year and apparently meant to pick
8:59
it on the longest day of the year
9:01
because he meant to plant it on the
9:02
shortest day and then plant it pick it
9:05
on the longest day but I never knew that
9:07
I just happened to pick it on that day
9:10
which is bizarre it must be my green
9:12
fingers I must have had it drilled into
9:14
my head sometime or later that I should
9:16
Harvest it on the longest day well we've
9:19
put it all in our polyon it's hung up
9:21
drying out ready for using and yeah I've
9:26
never cooked with garlic before so
9:28
that's going to be an experiment in
9:29
itself am I trying to grow cook stuff
9:32
with garlic so we'll have to look up
9:34
some recipes for that and see what we
9:36
can get with that as
9:38
well but yeah I think that is everything
9:41
that I've harvested this month it is
9:44
fantastic when you do start harvesting
9:46
all that produce from your alotment
9:48
again try not Harvest too much at the
9:50
once just Harvest as and when you need
9:53
stuff and
9:56
see what you want as and when you want
9:58
it like right I've got some more boxes
10:00
of potatoes I've not harvested them yet
10:03
because I've got one box of potatoes
10:05
harvested what will keep me go for a
10:08
couple of weeks so only Harvest what you
10:10
want and what you need and remember to
10:13
keep feeding your plants as well as
10:15
obviously they need food and nutrition
10:18
to keep them growing I keep going around
10:20
with some blood meal once a week to give
10:22
them some food and I keep sprinkling
10:25
some chicken pellets around every soften
10:27
as well to help
10:29
hopefully growing bigger all the plants
10:31
that are growing like I've got my sweet
10:33
corn that's starting to get big now I
10:35
want some massive sweet corn so we need
10:37
to keep them growing well we're giving
10:40
them drinks of water all the time
10:41
because they do like a lot of water
10:43
sweet cor so we're going to keep them
10:45
watered and keep them growing and
10:48
hopefully I'll be sharing lots of sweet
10:51
corn pictures with you in the coming
10:52
months well September time when they'll
10:55
usually be ready so it's been a busy
10:57
June down at the alotment
11:00
hopefully July is going to be as busy
11:02
hopefully we're going to get some hotter
11:03
weather and not just rain all the time I
11:06
don't mind it if it rains at night we
11:09
send it water as my plot for me I just
11:12
want it to be nice and warm in the
11:13
daytime so that I can spend some time
11:16
down there without having to get wet and
11:19
miss going to the allotment as well so
11:21
yeah it's been a very busy couple of
11:24
weeks down at the alotment again in
11:27
tomorrow's episode I'm going to be
11:28
talking about what jobs need to be done
