This video explains how to identify common garden birds by their appearance, behaviour and feeding habits. Learn the typical species you are likely to see in outdoor spaces and how to recognise them throughout the year.
The guide covers where birds feed, what foods they prefer and simple ways to support them with suitable feeders, water and shelter. Understanding these habits helps encourage regular bird visits to your garden.
If you enjoy birdwatching or want to support wildlife outdoors, this video provides a simple introduction to recognising and helping common garden birds.

0:38

0:39
gardening
0:42
Journey hey everybody and welcome back
0:45
to gardening with Ben sorry about the
0:48
two-day absence in the podcast but we
0:51
are here with a brand new podcast we
0:54
have been so busy this weekend getting
0:56
bits done down at the allotment and
0:59
recording you content and also I'm
1:02
sorting out all my content for February
1:05
so yeah it has been a busy weekend so
1:07
hence the reason why we've not had any
1:10
podcasts over the weekend but yes it was
1:12
the big bird weekend the weekend that I
1:15
had been waiting for all week I've never
1:19
shut up about it bet thinking on the
1:21
podcast will he please shut up about the
1:22
Big Bird Watch well unfortunately this
1:25
episode is about
1:27
that but yes we had the Big Bird Watch
1:31
I'd bought lots of seed I'd bought
1:33
peanuts I'd bought sultanas I'd bought
1:35
fat balls I'd bought SE blocks yes I
1:38
spent a load on bird seed and did it
1:42
pull off well possibly as obviously
1:47
we're feeding the birds it's good to put
1:49
it out every day and obviously the my my
1:51
bird feeders hadn't been filled up for
1:53
quite a few days since the last time I'd
1:55
been there so the birds didn't know to
1:58
automatically come down to the bird feed
2:00
us straight away but we managed to get
2:03
some birds down there after a while and
2:06
what birds did we see you will be
2:09
wondering well we saw absolutely loads
2:11
of robins yes they were all different
2:13
robins it weren't the same one that just
2:15
kept coming back because they're all
2:17
different shapes and sizes but it I
2:19
absolutely love seeing the Robbins down
2:21
there they absolutely loved it we saw a
2:25
few blue tits not many though not many
2:27
blue tits we also
2:30
saw the black bird black bird came down
2:33
quite a bit because had put sultanas out
2:35
and black birds obviously love the fruit
2:38
so we saw a few black birds we also saw
2:41
a few pigeons obviously wood pigeons
2:44
they're always around the wood pigeons
2:45
are greedy little Beggars but we're
2:48
feeding them that's the main thing and
2:51
what else did we see that was all the
2:54
birds that we actually saw obviously you
2:57
don't get as many varieties at this time
2:59
of year because a lot of either
3:01
hibernating or uh they hiding away
3:04
keeping warm and it has been bad weather
3:07
this weekend obviously we had the storm
3:09
on Friday and then we had a lot of rain
3:12
on Sunday so yeah it hasn't been the
3:15
best of weekends for recording it but
3:18
I'm happy I did it and happy that I've
3:21
invested in some new bird feeders and
3:23
lots more bird feed so that will keep us
3:26
going for a few more months and at this
3:30
time of year when you we need to be
3:32
feeding the birds because soon they'll
3:34
be getting ready for the mating season
3:36
and it helps fatten the males up and
3:39
gets the energy up ready for laying eggs
3:43
uh well obviously mating and the females
3:46
laying the eggs in the bird hous in
3:49
around March April time
3:52
possibly so that is why we need to keep
3:54
feeding them so hopefully keep my be
3:57
bird feeders filled up ready for around
3:59
that time
4:00
so what else did we get up to down at
4:02
the allotment at the weekend well we
4:04
didn't get up to too much to be
4:06
honest as it was absolutely bitterly
4:09
cold so cold um and it was so icy when I
4:13
went down on Sunday so icy my car
4:16
skitted everywhere going on to the
4:17
allotment site but we went down for a
4:19
few hours I didn't necessarily do any
4:21
work down there but I just enjoy being
4:24
out of the flat and in the fresh air for
4:26
a bit and just being with nature
4:32
and we are hopefully going to be putting
4:36
out a few videos this week I've recorded
4:38
a few YouTube videos so make sure you
4:40
stay tuned for them on YouTube if you
4:42
don't follow me on YouTube go ahead
4:44
across and listen find me gardening with
4:46
Ben and you'll be able to see all my
4:48
videos on there we filmed about four
4:50
videos for this week so I'm looking
4:52
forward to
4:54
them we've also started putting out new
4:58
content on Facebook uh if you don't
5:01
follow me on Facebook head over to my
5:03
Facebook page I'm starting to share more
5:06
informational posts obviously it's nice
5:09
to keep seeing photos of
5:11
me and all my produce and my vegetables
5:14
and what I've been getting up to but
5:16
I've started sharing more informational
5:18
posts because I've got a lot of newb on
5:20
my allotment and I want to start sharing
5:24
tips and advice and why gardening is
5:27
good and encourage more people to get
5:30
into gardening and that's what I'm
5:31
planning on doing over the next year is
5:34
trying to be more in in
5:37
informative that's if I can get it out
5:40
with everybody obviously we've got this
5:41
podcast where I talk about everything
5:43
and what I'm getting up to but I've
5:45
started putting more posts on Facebook
5:47
so if you see one of my posts feel free
5:49
to like it and leave a comment comments
5:52
do push my posts out so please do just
5:55
comment on it even if it's just a few
5:57
words as it helps push it out and and
5:59
obviously I've started replying now to
6:01
all comments uh that's my nightly job
6:03
what I do I go through all my comments
6:05
and update
6:07
them but it's good to keep up to date
6:09
with them obviously I used to read them
6:10
all before but I am now replying to them
6:13
as that obviously helps push it out as
6:15
well and I just want people to see that
6:17
I'm actually active and reading them and
6:19
keeping up to date with
6:20
everybody so we're doing that and I've
6:23
also filmed a video on my melon seeds
6:27
what I'm going to be growing this year
6:29
as I ordered absolutely loads of
6:31
varieties of melons off Amazon and
6:34
they've all come now and so I filmed a
6:36
little video for that so make sure you
6:38
stay tuned for this week that'll be drop
6:40
on YouTube this week all the varieties
6:42
that I'm going to be growing and also
6:44
I've put up a tour video of my allotment
6:47
so you can see how well things are
6:49
growing at the moment and how things
6:50
aren't growing what's failing there is
6:53
something failing if you watch the video
6:55
you'll see what's not doing very well
6:57
but yeah we do have a ups and downs and
7:00
like I always say I'm an honest Gardener
7:02
I share with you what's working and
7:04
what's not working I've also been out
7:06
and bought the gro magazine and the
7:09
kitchen Garden Magazine this week which
7:12
is the February Edition I should have
7:14
probably bought it a bit early CU in
7:15
March Edition might be out soon but when
7:17
I were doing my weekly shop I noticed
7:20
that both magazines are now putting 10
7:22
seed packets in a magazine and yes I
7:26
often just buy for the
7:28
seats but I will share with you in an
7:31
episode what seeds we have got in the
7:33
magazines so make sure you stay tuned
7:35
for that because they don't show you
7:37
what's in the uh seed packets until you
7:39
obviously open the bazine up so I'll be
7:42
sharing with you what seeds we're
7:43
getting in with them and the reason why
7:46
I do like to get the magazines is
7:49
because they have seeds in them what you
7:51
probably wouldn't Buy in the garden
7:52
center or from the shops and sometimes
7:56
you think oh I'll just give them a try I
7:58
might as well I'm not going to uh waste
8:01
them so you end up sewing them and there
8:03
could be a different variety of a seed
8:07
that you've never tried before and
8:09
sometimes they crop better than the ones
8:12
that you often see regularly and that is
8:15
how I came to try purple cauliflower
8:17
because I got a free packet of seeds and
8:19
the purple cauliflower did better than
8:21
the white cauliflower so hence why I've
8:24
continued to grow the purple cauliflower
8:26
every single year now so yeah I'll be
8:28
sharing them with you and what else have
8:32
we been up to that's it really what
8:35
we've been up to so yeah I'm just
8:37
getting into creating lots lots more
8:39
content for everybody because we're
8:41
growing every single day we're getting
8:43
new followers and I do appreciate it so
8:46
if you are new to this podcast do give
8:48
us a follow and stay up to date towards
8:50
the end of the week we're going to be
8:52
doing our February podcasts where we
8:55
talk about what seats we can s in
8:58
February and what job jobs need doing in
9:00
the garden and alotment in February so
9:02
that is a vital podcast which I know
9:04

9:07
