How to attract more wildlife to your
0:03
garden. Welcome to Gardening with Ben.
0:05
In today's video, we're going to talk
0:06
about how to attract more wildlife into
0:08
your garden. Now, I absolutely love the
0:11
wildlife. I really do. If I could stay
0:13
down here and sit and watch the wildlife
0:15
all day. I certainly would do, but I've
0:17
got jobs to do. There's always jobs to
0:19
do down at the a lotment. But yeah, I
0:21
love the wildlife. I love the birds. I
0:23
love the frogs. I love the hedgehogs. I
0:25
even love the squibbles. Even though
0:27
they cause damage, I love to see the
0:29
squirrels down here. And I'll still keep
0:32
feeding the birds and attracting the
0:34
squirrels, but oh well, I don't mind as
0:37
long as they don't cause too much damage
0:38
to my along and pull up my jewel bulbs.
0:41
But yeah, how can we attract more
0:43
wildlife to our garden? I'm going to
0:45
look at these ideas as well and see if I
0:47
can do anything more to attract the
0:49
wildlife to my plot. So add bird feeders
0:52
and keep them topped up. Now I've got
0:53
about 20 bird feeders on my one. We've
0:55
got so many. And since I put up my
0:57
arches, I put up loads more bird
0:59
feeders. And we've got blue tits, we've
1:01
got robins, we've got blackbirds, we've
1:03
got magpies, we've got loads of birds.
1:05
Now, I've not seen any unusual birds
1:07
yet. I'm just looking now because we've
1:09
got some blue tits on my feeders. But
1:11
yeah, I absolutely love the blue tits.
1:13
And I've put bird boxes as well so that
1:16
they can come and nest in the
1:17
springtime. Obviously, make sure you
1:19
clean them out over the winter so that
1:21
then in springtime they'll be looking
1:22
for a house to move into and they may
1:25
possibly choose yards. They won't move
1:26
in if there's signs of life in there
1:28
already. So, make sure you clean them
1:30
out over the winter period.
1:33
Leave some areas wild for shelter.
1:36
Animals love a bit of shelter. So, if
1:39
leave an area that's wild and animal
1:42
friendly and you may get hedgehogs in
1:44
there, you may get blackbirds hiding in
1:46
there. They like to hide in bushes and
1:49
stuff like that. So leave an area a bit
1:51
of a wild area so that they can enjoy
1:55
Plant pollinator friendly flowers. Now
1:58
obviously having an a lotment you need
1:59
the bees to come. So make sure you have
2:01
plenty of flowers that will attract
2:04
bees, butterflies and yeah bring some.
2:09
The more bees you get obviously the more
2:11
fruit you'll have because they'll help
2:12
pollinate the food plants as well. and
2:15
your corettes, your cucumbers, your
2:17
tomatoes. You need all those beads to
2:19
help with the pollination of the a
2:21
lotment. So yeah, adding pollinator
2:23
flowers not only gives you fantastic
2:26
color and makes it look beautiful, it
2:29
also attracts the bees as well. Build
2:32
bug hotels or log piles. I've not got a
2:34
bug hotel as yet, so I need to get a bug
2:37
hotel down at my lotment. But yeah,
2:39
that'll attract like your ladybirds and
2:42
obviously wood lice like to hide in them
2:44
and all different critters like to hide
2:46
in bug hotels. So I might have one of
2:49
those down at my a lotment and let them
2:50
move into it. Avoid chemicals and go
2:54
organic. Now I don't use chemicals down
2:56
at my a lotment. I'm all organic. I'll
2:58
dig up all the weeds myself. I won't
3:00
spray them and stuff like that. I always
3:02
do it all myself. So going organic will
3:06
obviously stop killing the pests off as
3:08
well. So obviously some pests that you
3:11
don't like but you work around it. You
3:13
attract have different plants to put off
3:17
different insects coming and stuff like
3:20
that. So doing all your bit helps in all
3:25
Provide food, water and safe spaces all
3:28
year round. Now, I've got some bird
3:30
bowls on my a lotment, and the birds
3:31
absolutely love splashing around in them
3:34
and enjoying them. But yeah, having bird
3:36
food obviously attracts mice and rats,
3:38
but you're down on an aotment, you're
3:40
going to get mice and rats as well. But
3:43
I love to see the birds, and they love
3:45
to come down on my a lotment and enjoy
3:47
it as well. So, it's a win-lose
3:49
situation, but it's up to you if you do
3:52
it or not. And yeah, I don't know if
3:54
we've got any badgers or foxes down
3:56
here, but I need to put my wildlife
3:57
camera back up as well and see if we've
4:00
got some more different wildlife coming
4:02
down to it. I might have to find
4:03
somewhere to fix it all because I've got
4:06
my wildlife camera from when I had some
4:08
cats coming down. The cats were loving
4:09
it down on my a lotment and having cats
4:12
on the a lotment. They were eating all
4:13
the mice and the rats. So, it's
4:14
brilliant to see as well. So, yeah, I
4:18
get a lot of wildlife down on my a
4:19
lotment. So, I hope you found these tips
