It's the big bird watch this weekend.
0:03
Welcome to Gardening with Ben and I hope
0:05
that you're all well today. Yes, I
0:08
always love the big bird watch time as I
0:12
love to encourage the birds onto my a
0:14
lotment and I've got so many birds
0:17
coming down here even through the
0:18
winter. We've got blue tits, we've got
0:20
robins, we've got blackbirds, yes, we've
0:22
got some pigeons and we have also just
0:25
started getting some wagtails down at
0:28
the plot. like I don't see but I've not
0:30
seen wagtails on my plot before and now
0:33
I've attracted them. They come in like
0:34
the masses on my fat balls and they
0:37
absolutely love them. So yeah, I'm
0:39
loving seeing all the birds and getting
0:41
the birds down to the a lotment. They
0:42
will help with things as well cuz
0:44
they'll keep an eye out for slugs and
0:46
snails and insects and they'll take them
0:49
with them as well. So it's great to
0:51
encourage the birds to the plot. Yes, it
0:53
can attract rats when you're feeding
0:55
them and stuff like that. And also the
0:57
squirrels. The squirrels absolutely
0:59
divine my nut feeder. So, I've not been
1:01
putting nuts out at the moment, but
1:03
yeah, we've been getting so many birds
1:05
come to our feeders. Now, next weekend,
1:09
Saturday and Sunday is the big bird
1:11
watch. And what that means is that you
1:13
need to spend an hour watching your bird
1:16
feeders. Whether you've got a
1:17
conservatory at your house and you can
1:19
sit in there in the warmth and watch
1:21
them or whether you can peek through
1:22
your shed, little observation area, and
1:26
keep count of what birds you see in that
1:29
hour. Yes, some birds might repeat
1:31
themselves and come back again, but it's
1:33
about recording them and sending them
1:38
BB BP. I can't say it. So, yeah, it's
1:42
about sending them off. you can go on
1:44
the website and submit them and it's
1:46
great to help keep a track of what birds
1:49
we've got in our gardens and our a
1:51
lotments because obviously they're on
1:52
the decline but I love to encourage
1:55
them. I've got some bird houses on my
1:57
plot and one of the years when I first
1:59
bought my bird houses, I've got some
2:01
bird feeders nearby in my plum tree and
2:04
I'd been feeding on throughout all the
2:06
winters and it were coming up to around
2:09
February, March time when um the birds
2:12
start nesting and I put my birdouses up
2:15
and literally within half an hour blue
2:19
tits were going in and out of it. are
2:21
like so impressed because I know
2:23
sometimes you got to have them pointed
2:25
the right way, birdhouses. So, make sure
2:27
you're pointing them the right way. And
2:31
I got some blue tits in it the first
2:32
year. Absolutely amazing. And they laid
2:36
the eggs and I saw the blue tits fledge
2:39
and it was amazing to see. And like I
2:42
said, they were flying in and out all
2:44
the time coming back with worms and bugs
2:46
and stuff for the babies. So it's great
2:48
h encouraging the blue tits to the a
2:50
lotment. Now one of my plot neighbors
2:54
they had their bird house facing a
2:55
different way and what they did they
2:58
moved it to the same facing the same way
3:00
mine was and they got blue tits in it
3:03
straight away as well. So, make sure
3:04
they are facing the right way and you
3:08
you'll have to look it up because I
3:09
can't remember which way they need to
3:10
face. But yeah, make sure that they're
3:13
facing the right way so that they go
3:15
into them and hopefully lay some eggs as
3:18
well. So, let me know if you're getting
3:19
involved in the big bird watch this
3:21
weekend. Let me know what birds you get
3:24
in your garden. And until next time,
3:26
everyone, remember, keep smiling, keep
3:28
shining, and keep gardening with Ben,
