jobs to do down at your a lotment when
0:02
it's rainy and it's stormy. Welcome to
0:05
Gardening with Ben. And yes, it is wet
0:08
and stormy today. We've got storm Amy
0:10
here at the moment causing havoc. But
0:13
we're still down here at the plot
0:14
because I do love to get down and out to
0:16
the plot. I only get my weekends off.
0:19
So, I like to spend as much time down
0:20
here as possible. Yes, I'm lucky I've
0:23
got a poly tunnel. I've got a shed. I
0:25
can keep on coming down and keep dry and
0:28
out of the rain. And even if I don't get
0:31
a lot of stuff done, it's good to get
0:32
out and get down to the plot. And being
0:34
in the fresh air is great for your
0:37
mental health and your positivity and
0:39
your well-being. So, it's great to get
0:41
outside if possible.
0:44
So, what jobs do we do when it's raining
0:47
down here at the a lotment? Well,
0:48
obviously it's autumn winter period at
0:51
the moment and the best thing to do at
0:54
this time of year is tie day. Yes, tie
0:56
date. The job I absolutely hate doing,
0:58
but it needs doing. And if you're like
1:01
me, I end up getting loads of compost
1:03
bags, uh loads of cardboard from stuff
1:06
I've had delivered. I've got all my old
1:08
tomato plants behind me, as you can see.
1:11
We've got as old melon plants as pots
1:14
everywhere. So, it's good time to get
1:17
them out of the ground, get them tided,
1:19
and clear them all away. Because if you
1:22
leave them in your poly tunnel or your
1:24
greenhouse, you'll end up causing issues
1:27
where if they've had diseases, they'll
1:29
harbor in the poly tunnel and the the
1:31
shed and they will come back next year.
1:33
So, get them all out. Get them out of
1:35
your green houses and poly tunnels. Put
1:37
all your rubbish on your compost heat
1:39
that needs to.
1:41
And also get washing. Yes, get your
1:44
marolds out and get washing. As they say
1:47
that you should wash your pots with
1:49
soapy water and clean them ready for
1:52
next year. So, get your fairy liquid out
1:55
and get them clean ready for next year
1:57
so that you don't have any diseases
2:00
harboring on your pots because they'll
2:02
spawn back up again next year and they
2:04
will come back. And it's good to get
2:06
everything clean and tidy for next year.
2:09
And talking of cleaning, that is a good
2:11
time to get your poly tunnels
2:13
disinfected and your green houses. And
2:18
it's case of using disinfectant and
2:20
clean them down really well as again the
2:24
diseases can harbor on the poly tunnel
2:26
skins, in the cracks of the green
2:28
houses, even on the steel frames. So get
2:31
them all washed down and cleaned ready
2:34
for next year. And then once that job's
2:35
done, it's done. You've done it all. and
2:38
you'll have a clean sparkling greenhouse
2:41
all polyel ready for next year ready for
2:44
springtime when you start sewing all
2:46
those seeds.
2:48
Also at this time of year in October
2:51
where we are now you can sew a lot of
2:53
bianial seeds that means like you uh
2:56
they won't flower this year but they'll
2:58
flower next year. So flowers like your
3:00
fox gloves, your
3:03
wall flowers, your loopins, all great
3:07
flowers for an a lotment and they're
3:09
easy to grow as well. So go and get some
3:12
seeds, get some compost, get them
3:14
growing in your polyon or in your
3:16
greenhouse. They will grow at this time
3:18
of year. So get some sewn and you can
3:21
add a lot of color for next year down at
3:23
your plot. Attract those bees. Attract
3:25
that wildlife. Attract the insects, all
3:27
the pollinators that you can get down to
3:29
your a lotment to help spread the pollen
3:32
from the plants to produce more produce
3:35
for you at your a lotment and your
3:37
greenhouse.
3:39
So, there's plenty of jobs that you can
3:41
do down at your a lotment. Yes, it might
3:43
be awful outside. It might be horrible
3:46
weather, the rain coming down, the wind
3:48
blowing, but you can do stuff indoors.
3:52
And like I said, it's great to get out
3:54
and about and be in the fresh air, get
3:58
the radio on, get some music blasting,
4:01
and you can enjoy your time being down
4:03
here at the a lotment. And I love doing
4:06
these videos because it encourages me to
4:08
come down and keep sharing tips and
4:10
advice with you all. And I hope that you
4:13
do enjoy them. So, make sure you drop us
