What seeds are we sewing in August?
0:05
Welcome to Gardening with Ben. And in
0:06
today's video, we're going to talk about
0:08
what seeds I am personally planting in
0:11
August this month as I want to start
0:15
some more off. Things are starting to
0:17
die off and I want something else to
0:19
concentrate on doing. And August is a
0:23
fantastic time to start off your bienial
0:26
flowers. That means that you start them
0:28
off this year and then they'll flower
0:30
next year. So, what seeds are we
0:33
planting? That is the big question. So,
0:36
we're going to be starting a lot of
0:37
flowers off ready for next year. I like
0:39
my flowers as they attract the bees and
0:41
the bees help with pollination as well.
0:44
So, the first one that we're going to be
0:46
sewing is forget me knots. I've never
0:49
sewn them before. So, we'll see how well
0:52
they get on. We'll be starting these off
0:54
in the poly tunnel. keeping them alive
0:57
throughout the winter and then planting
0:59
them next year. So, they look pretty
1:03
nice.
1:06
Then we're going to try some fox gloves.
1:08
Now, bees absolutely love these. They
1:10
love going into the flowers, collecting
1:12
the nectar, and then flying off. So,
1:15
yeah, they'll be a great one to start.
1:17
I'm looking forward to growing these.
1:19
I'm learning more and more about flowers
1:21
all the time as I don't know much about
1:23
flowers. I know obviously more about
1:25
vegetables, but the more I learn, the
1:27
more I can share with you guys. So
1:29
again, if you're wanting to try and grow
1:31
some flowers yourself, these are the
1:34
ones to get started now, ready for next
1:36
year. Then we're also going to grow some
1:39
primulas. Now, I'm not always that keen
1:42
on these because when they do start to
1:44
die off, they look horrible, but they
1:46
add some color throughout the winter
1:48
period. So, we're going to be sewing
1:50
some of these and hopefully we'll get
1:52
some flowers on them throughout the
1:54
winter.
1:56
Then, an easy one, and yes, they are
1:59
easy. I've had fantastic results from
2:02
growing these myself. I've grown them a
2:04
few years over the past, and these are
2:07
loopins. They grow really well. Start
2:10
them off now, and you'll probably get
2:12
small flowers next year, but then the
2:15
year after they'll probably be a lot
2:16
bigger. So, if you're wanting some
2:19
fantastic loopins, get growing some now
2:22
and see how well you get on. Like I
2:24
said, they're nice and easy and they're
2:26
expensive to buy the plants, so it saves
2:29
you a hell of a lot of money and they
2:31
look absolutely fantastic in the garden.
2:36
Then we're going to try some sweet
2:38
williams.
2:40
Never grown these before. Again, another
2:42
new bit to me. So, we'll be giving it a
2:45
try, seeing how well they get on. seeing
2:47
if we get a good result. Obviously, give
2:49
us a follow and then you'll be able to
2:50
stay up to date with how well we get on
2:52
with these.
2:54
And last but not least, are wall
2:57
flowers. Again, another fantastic
3:00
flower. And again, I've never tried
3:02
these before. So, all these new ones are
3:04
new to me as well, and I'm looking
3:07
forward to trying all these. Then, I'm
3:10
only going to be sewing one vegetable to
3:12
try throughout the winter. You may have
3:14
seen in my previous video about um
3:17
Chinese cabbage. I've never tried
3:18
growing Chinese cabbage before, so I
3:21
thought why not give it a try? Let's see
3:23
how well we get on with it and taste it.
3:26
I've never tried Chinese cabbage, so
3:28
it'll be great to try it. So, I'm going
3:30
to try some of that. See how we get on
3:32
and see if we can grow some through the
3:35
winter and see if we get any good
3:37
results from it.
3:39
Then, finally, Christmas potatoes. I'm
3:42
going to be starting my Christmas
3:43
potatoes. And these are the ones that
3:48
I'm going to be trying. If you So,
3:50
obviously, if you're growing Christmas
3:51
potatoes, I plant them in the poly
3:53
tunnel in boxes because the cold frost
3:56
can damage them. So, I grow them in the
3:59
poly tunnel. I plant them in August and
4:02
then they'll be ready to harvest around
4:04
December time. So, I bought these online
4:07
and I thought, "Oh, that's a good
4:08
price." Didn't realize how many I'd
4:10
bought too many poly for me. I'll be
4:12
sharing them with somebody else. So,
4:15
we've got three varieties of potatoes.
4:19
We have got
4:24
Aaron Pilot, but look at how many is in
4:27
a bag.
4:29
There's a kilogram in each one. So,
4:31
there's about 25 potatoes. I only needed
4:34
probably about six of each one.
4:38
too many potatoes. It'll be all right if
4:40
I planted them outside, but because I'm
4:42
planting them in boxes, it'll be more
4:43
expensive getting all the compost for
4:45
them. Then we've got some javelin
4:50
javelin variety.
4:56
And then we have got some Maris Piper
5:00
ones as well. So yeah, three great
5:04
varieties of potato. We'll be planting
5:06
them next weekend down at the a lotment.
5:09
So, make sure you stay tuned for that.
5:10
I'll do a video on us planting them and
5:13
then obviously you'll be able to follow
5:15
along and see how well they get on. So,
5:17
if you're wanting Christmas potatoes,
5:19
make sure you order them online. You can
5:21
get your seed potatoes and most garden
5:24
centers do them now. They uh really try
5:26
and sell Christmas potatoes, but
5:28
remember to grow them indoors. Uh some
5:31
people do grow them outside, but I
5:32
wouldn't advise it as the frost can kill
5:35
the plants if we do get a hard frost. So
5:38
yeah, give it a try. Let me know if
5:40
you're going to be growing Christmas
5:42
potatoes or if you're going to try any
5:43
of those flowers as well or even Chinese
5:45
cabbage. I'd love to hear from you all.
5:48
So make sure you share this post to
5:51
gardening groups to let them know what
5:54
can be sewn and encourage other people
5:56
to grow stuff. Give it a like, give it a
5:59
comment, and keep watching my videos. So
6:03
until next time everyone, remember, keep
6:04
smiling, keep shining, and keep
6:07
gardening with Ben.
