This video explains how to care for garden birds during colder conditions and provide safe feeding areas. I cover suitable foods, fresh water, feeder placement, and simple practices that help birds stay healthy. It is helpful for gardeners wanting to support wildlife and encourage natural activity in the garden.

other birds this autumn winter time down
0:03
in the a lotment and at the garden.
0:05
Welcome to gardening with Ben. Today
0:08
we're going to talk about why it's
0:10
important to keep feeding those fairy
0:12
friends down at the a lotment. Now I
0:16
love to encourage the birds to my a lot.
0:18
They will eat the insects and they'll
0:22
eat the worms and yeah, they keep you
0:25
company as well while down at the a
0:27
lotment. And it's great to see wildlife
0:29
down here. Um,
0:32
I love to encourage the birds to my plot
0:35
because I love to see the blue tates. I
0:36
love to see robins, black birds,
0:39
finches, any of the birds that are UK
0:43
native. And I don't get many varieties
0:46
of birds down here unfortunately, but we
0:49
do get a lot of robins and blue ticks.
0:51
And over the last couple of years, I've
0:53
had blue ticks nesting in my nest boxes
0:56
as well. So I don't tend to feed them
0:58
throughout the summertime because
1:00
there's plenty around for them to eat.
1:02
But I do feed them through the autumn
1:04
winter. Springtime as during the
1:07
springtime that's when the blue tits are
1:08
looking for the birdhouses and I love to
1:11
encourage them to hopefully nest on the
1:13
plot because that's absolutely amazing
1:15
seeing the blue tits seeing them fledge
1:17
and seeing them fly off and make a new
1:20
life for themselves. So I love to do
1:22
this. Yes, it can be expensive in bird
1:25
seed and bird feeders and stuff like
1:28
that. And it obviously can attract rats
1:30
and squirrels, which it certainly does
1:33
attract the squirrels to my plot. They
1:34
do love to try and destroy my bird
1:36
feeders. I do need to get some squirrel
1:38
proof ones eventually, but they're a bit
1:41
more money, but until then, we'll just
1:43
keep on using the cheaper ones until we
1:46
get some squirrel proof ones eventually.
1:49
So, as you can see, we've got bird
1:51
feeders hanging behind me, and they do
1:54
empty them quite often. So, on a weekly
1:56
basis, I tend to have to try and fill
1:58
them back up. So, we have got our bird
2:00
feed at the ready. We've got absolutely
2:02
loads because, like I said, we've got
2:05
plenty of bird feeders up and we've got
2:07
to keep them fed throughout the winter
2:08
because obviously they need the
2:12
fat to keep them, give them the energy
2:14
throughout the winter period. And
2:16
obviously a lot of birds do migrate
2:18
through the winter, but you'll still see
2:20
your robins and your blue tits around
2:23
down at the plot. So we need to keep
2:26
them happy. Need to keep them here and
2:28
keep them fed because it's absolutely
2:30
brilliant seeing the wildlife out here.
2:32
I've obviously shown videos before of
2:35
blue ticks in the blue tick boxes and
2:37
fledging and it's absolutely amazing to
2:40
see. And I do love looking after the
2:42
wildlife and encouraging it. It does
2:45
attract the squirrels like I said and
2:47
the rats, but that's what you got to put
2:50
with having an aotment. So, let's get
2:52
these bird feeders full up and let's get
2:54
them hung up and ready for feeding time.
3:00
So, we've put up a lot of new archers
3:01
this year down at our plot as you can
3:03
see. And we've hung lots and lots of
3:06
bird feeders up onto them. So, we need
3:09
to fill all these back up and get them
3:12
ready for the birds because a lot of
3:14
them are empty.
3:15
and they've been eating them, which is
3:17
great to see. So, let's take them all
3:19
down and fill them all up. So, that is
3:21
the bear feeders filled up. We still got
3:22
some fat balls to get and some nuts for
3:25
that one. But, yeah, the bear feeders
3:27
are filled up. So, hopefully just need
3:30
the birds to come now and eat the
3:31
dinner.
3:34
So, make sure you stay tuned for lots of
3:37
pictures on Instagram and Facebook of
3:39
all the birds that we capture down here.
3:41
And make sure you feed your birds down
3:43
at the a lotment and in the garden this
3:45
winter time to keep them well fed. So
3:48
until next time everyone, remember, keep
3:50
smiling, keep shining, and keep diving
3:51
with everyone.
