0:25
episode hello and welcome back to
0:27
gardening with Ben for a new episode
0:32
well today it's Thursday and have I been
0:36
busy down at the allotment today I
0:38
certainly have and it was absolutely
0:41
freezing when I got to the alotment this
0:43
morning it was so bitter it was trying
0:46
to rain it was just so cold but we got
0:51
down there and we spent hours down there
0:54
um absolutely loads of time down there
0:56
today getting bits and Bobs done
1:00
so what have we been up to today well I
1:03
went to my favorite garden place where I
1:06
always buy all my stuff from recently
1:09
and I have purchased two blueberry
1:14
bushes and
1:16
some seed
1:18
potatoes as I've grown blueberries for a
1:22
couple of years now and they get really
1:25
good uh blueberries on them but I've
1:27
also created this new fruit area that
1:30
I'm growing um all my strawberries in
1:33
and my phoness blackberries and
1:36
raspberries in and I thought I need
1:40
something else to add in there um so I
1:43
thought what can I get and I know
1:45
blueberries are expensive to buy from
1:47
the supermarket and I thought why not
1:50
yeah they don't take much looking after
1:53
so why not purchase some blueberries so
1:56
I've purchased two more and I'm on the
1:59
verge of attempting to buy another two
2:02
uh to go in another spot so we'll have
2:04
to see if we get them the only thing is
2:07
with blue bries is that you need to
2:09
plant them in
2:11
acious compost or ous
2:14
soil and the reason is that they prefer
2:17
that sort of compost to survive and to
2:21
get the crops that they need so the best
2:24
tips and advice I always give for
2:27
planting blue bries is to get your cous
2:30
compost and plant them in large tubs now
2:34
you can get tubs quite cheap these days
2:36
these plastic ones and make sure that
2:39
they've got holes in for the drainage so
2:42
that they will obviously let the water
2:44
out because you don't want them getting
2:46
water logged or too wet and rot the
2:48
roots on them so I've planted these two
2:52
in tubs and I've sunk them into the
2:56
ground now the reason why I sink them
2:58
into the ground is because obviously
3:01
when it gets windy it will um blow them
3:04
over and you could damage them and lose
3:06
the food off them and also if they sunk
3:10
into the ground it's as if they like
3:12
planted really they look part of the
3:14
allotment and part of the attraction so
3:17
they're in the ground and also they look
3:20
less
3:21
opportunistic if if I can say
3:24
that if they were just stood on the
3:27
allotment in pots who knows who would
3:29
walking past and they just come and grab
3:31
them and take them away and have free
3:33
blueberry plants for themselves so yeah
3:36
I SN them into the ground and I was
3:39
talking to my plot neighbor today and he
3:41
knows quite a bit about gardening and he
3:44
was saying make sure you feed them with
3:45
ericaceous feed and also that you can
3:48
feed them with chicken pellets manure so
3:51
I need to read up on that because it's
3:53
got the nitrogen in it he says and they
3:56
are good for blueberries uh so chicken
4:00
I'll have to get some more because I've
4:02
run out of them I know they're quite
4:04
cheap as well to buy so we need to get
4:06
some of those for the allotment as well
4:08
because I usually feed my rhubarb with
4:10
it as well uh I usually feed that at the
4:13
beginning of the year so that could do
4:14
with feeding this time of year as
4:17
well and then I've bought my sea
4:21
potatoes I have purchased ones that are
4:24
called Charlotte and Nicola so two
4:27
girls' names I purchased them ones
4:30
as I've grown Charlotte in the past but
4:31
I've never grown Nicola so I thought I'd
4:34
give that one a try and see how they get
4:36
on these are second earliest uh so it
4:39
says to harvest them around 14 to 16
4:43
weeks after you planted them so that
4:45
should see us through summer I will be
4:48
starting these off chitting them and
4:50
getting them ready uh for planting out I
4:53
usually plant out on Good Friday I stick
4:57
to the old wife's tale of planted on
4:59
good Friday yes I know Good Friday moves
5:01
every year but it's to do with the moon
5:04
and it's an old gardeners saying to
5:07
plant them on Good Friday so that's what
5:10
I've always done I always stick around
5:12
that Daye and that's when I plant them
5:13
all so I'm looking forward to getting
5:16
those started so what else have we been
5:18
up to well I'm currently in the process
5:22
of getting all my plot cleared I've been
5:25
working from the front of the plot and
5:27
working my way to the back of the plot
5:30
I'm I've cleared around all my fruit
5:33
trees that's all done I've cleared
5:35
around my rarb area they're all nice and
5:38
ready for growing they're all popping
5:40
the heads through I shared a picture on
5:41
Instagram the other day of them
5:43
gardening with Ben if you're not
5:44
following me on
5:45
Instagram so I've got all that cleared
5:48
then I moved on to creating this new
5:51
fruit area where I've been planting my
5:53
strawberries I've planted absolutely
5:56
loads of spring bulbs around it as well
5:59
and I've I've also done my raspberries
6:03
which are summer raspberries these are
6:05
summer ones what I've uh popped up where
6:07
they shouldn't do from my neighbor's
6:09
plot so I've planted those I've planted
6:12
my phoneless black bris which I'm
6:13
looking forward to quite a few people
6:15
were commenting on them yesterday uh
6:18
saying that they're not too vicious when
6:20
they're growing so we'll see how they
6:21
get on and now we're moving on to my
6:23
main plot area which will take a few
6:26
weeks to get cracking on that area and
6:28
get all that completed but it's not
6:31
going to be as hard as the other areas
6:33
cuz it's quite straightforward it's case
6:35
of getting it all cleared I'm not
6:37
digging around anything or protecting
6:39
any plants or anything like that because
6:41
it's where I grow everything uh that
6:43
only grows once a year so I can like
6:46
literally go in and demolition it all
6:49
and just get it all cleared and tided
6:51
and get it cracked on with real and
6:54
they're all split up into beds where
6:55
they are as well so I usually say I'll
6:58
do four beds today or I'll do four beds
7:00
tomorrow or something like that depends
7:03
how long I stay down at the plot for and
7:06
I actually stayed longer than I thought
7:08
today because my plot neighbor was down
7:10
like I said and it's always more
7:13
encouraging when somebody else is down
7:14
there at the side of you working on
7:17
their plot you think ought stay down
7:19
here if somebody else is down here and
7:21
stay that a little bit longer and it
7:24
certainly helps me get along with my
7:26
plot and hopefully by the end of
7:29
February my main plot area should be
7:32
cleared that is my target to get my main
7:35
plot cleared by the end of February and
7:37
I'm well on the way to getting it done
7:40
and getting on track with that so I'm
7:42
looking forward to sharing that once
7:44
photo of it once it is completely
7:46
cleared and show you what it looked like
7:48
before cuz it did look a mess uh it got
7:51
the old sunflowers growing in it and
7:53
everything so yeah hopefully in a couple
7:57
of weeks it will look brilliant and then
7:59
I can move on to the jobs inside my shed
8:02
and it's Cas of getting all new shelving
8:04
up getting all of it swept and cleared
8:07
and hopefully fingers crossed I'm going
8:09
to give it a good liquor paint this year
8:12
and Spruce it up and make it look nicer
8:15
uh because it does need a bit of TLC and
8:17
Care inside it and it needs a lot of
8:20
improvements doing to it uh it's been up
8:22
quite a few years now so it's looking a
8:24
bit derilict inside if you must say uh
8:28
but yeah we're wanting to get them sort
8:29
of jobs done and then my poly tunnel as
8:32
well um I didn't use my poly tunnel like
8:35
I said last year and hopefully like this
8:37
year I'm going to be growing melons
8:40
Peppers chilies cucumbers Tomatoes Au
8:45
jeans all inside my polyon also so I'm
8:47
looking forward to sharing all that with
8:49
you from uh the plot from what I'm
8:51
getting up to
8:53
really so yeah it has been a busy four
8:56
days down at the plot we have certainly
8:58
cracked on getting it all done there's
9:01
still so much to get done and I'm adding
9:05
adding adding lots more flowers that
9:07
come back year after year and my auntie
9:10
and uncle came down today and I was
9:12
showing them my campola what I planted
9:15
and they were saying how much it spread
9:17
on their Garden when they had it and it
9:20
looked fantastic so I'm looking forward
9:22
to that taking hold this year as well
9:24
and starting to spread and fill up all
9:27
the soil gaps and stuff like that and I
9:30
was even nearly tempted to get some more
9:32
gladiol light bulbs today so I may get
9:35
some more uh soon I saw two packets for
9:39
£9 and there was 50 in a pack so it be
9:44
like 100 gladi eye bulbs and they'd look
9:46
absolutely fantastic in one of the
9:48
flower beds just all gladiol eyes it
9:51
would look absolutely
9:53
stunning obviously it take quite a bit
9:55
to hold them all up once they've all
9:57
grown because uh they do start to bend
9:59
and Sway and stuff like that uh my
10:02
grandma she used instead of using rubber
10:04
bands she used to use her old tights and
10:06
cut them into rubber bands uh because
10:09
they were a bit more gentle on the
10:10
plants so that's a little gardening tip
10:13
there for you uh use all tights and cut
10:16
them up and make your own rubber bands
10:18
out of them not that I can be doing that
10:20
cuz I don't wear tights only at a
10:24
weekend but yeah um I've enjoyed talking
10:27
about what I've been up to down at the
10:29
allotment on these podcasts for the last
