0:21
and let's enjoy today's episode hello
0:25
and welcome back to gardening with Ben
0:29
well if you're listening to to this on
0:31
Sunday that is because we've managed to
0:34
schedule it and it's still published
0:36
even though we've not paid a
0:38
subscription yet because we're waiting
0:39
for Payday on the 25th so if you want to
0:42
pay for the subscription for me feel
0:44
free to message me it's only 20 but yeah
0:48
uh hopefully we will get the podcast up
0:50
and running on Friday again so I
0:53
probably won't be able to record what
0:55
I've been up to on the plot so you'll
0:57
have to wait for a big catch up on that
0:59
one
1:00
so we're pre-recording some episodes
1:02
before to hopefully fill the gaps and
1:05
keep the podcast going until I can
1:08
actually record them again and upload
1:10
them so what are we going to be talking
1:13
about today so today we're going to talk
1:16
about what you can grow around now
1:20
outside because it's going to be a
1:23
heatwave this week it's going to be
1:26
20Β° and sometimes when you're a new
1:29
Garden
1:30
it can be quite exciting because people
1:34
get think oh I can start growing
1:36
everything outside now the weather's
1:38
turning nice but no hold back do not do
1:42
it because the frost will come still and
1:45
kill them you could still get snow we
1:48
could still get Frost and things can
1:51
easily get killed in the bad weather and
1:54
we wouldn't want that
1:56
whatsoever so we are going to be
2:00
talking about some of the stuff that you
2:02
can actually grow outside at this time
2:04
of year and I will be starting to plant
2:07
some stuff myself hopefully in the
2:09
coming weeks outside as like I said the
2:12
weather's getting warmer now and
2:14
hopefully it stays this way fingers
2:16
crossed but knowing UK weather it
2:18
certainly won't stay this
2:20
way but some of the things that you can
2:24
start to plant
2:25
outside are you can start growing your
2:30
potatoes
2:31
outside now these are usually our first
2:34
earlies they can usually be planted
2:36
around now my dad was talking about
2:39
planting his he grows in in tubs uh
2:43
rather than in ground because he seems
2:45
to get better crops from him so he's
2:47
going to be growing his in tubs this
2:49
year and he's going to be planting them
2:53
this week I'm going to be looking at
2:56
possibly planting my earlies this week
2:59
and and usually I plant them on Good
3:01
Friday and obviously Good Friday changes
3:05
every single year but sometimes Good
3:08
Friday can be in March and Good Friday
3:11
is obviously all to do with the moon
3:14
so that is a reason why I usually stick
3:17
to Good Friday but you can start to get
3:20
them in the ground now obviously they
3:22
need to be deep in the ground at least a
3:24
spade depth deep
3:27
and when you are grow them if they do
3:31
start popping up out of the ground the
3:33
green shoes you need to cover them back
3:36
up with soil because if the cold Frost
3:38
gets to them or the snow it will kill
3:41
them it will Scorch them it can turn
3:43
them black uh the plants and I've seen
3:46
so many photos one year we had a really
3:49
late frost in May and everybody was
3:52
showing how much
3:56
um their potatoes got damaged by it
3:59
thankfully I'd covered mine up with soil
4:02
and people had fleeced theirs over
4:04
because they knew this Frost was coming
4:07
and I always keep it I well I did last
4:10
year I always kept my eyes on the
4:11
temperature because I worked at a garden
4:13
center so we had to check the
4:14
temperature every night to see what it
4:16
was going down to so whether we had to
4:18
protect the plants or not so it's worth
4:21
off checking the temperature every night
4:23
before you go to bed or in the afternoon
4:26
to see what it's going to be like that
4:27
night and you can always prepare
4:29
yourself because you can put stuff
4:31
outside in this warm weather you can
4:34
start your seeds off outside but
4:36
obviously fetch them in those if it's
4:38
going to drop to so many degrees because
4:40
you don't want to kill those plants off
4:43
you've put all the effort into growing
4:44
them you don't want them to die dear so
4:47
yeah that is the main thing to do so
4:52
obviously you can start your potatoes
4:54
now like I said and another good thing
4:56
to start now are your onion sets now
5:00
many garden centers and DIY shops will
5:03
be selling bags of onions now I won't be
5:06
growing onion sets this year I've grown
5:08
all my onions from seed now you can
5:11
still start off onions from seed now but
5:14
a good time to start onions off from
5:16
seed usually is January February time to
5:18
get them growing so that they can grow
5:21
big enough in time for
5:23
harvesting so we're going to look at
5:26
possibly maybe getting those in the
5:28
ground this week which is exciting and
5:31
obviously growing onions you need to
5:33
make sure that you do net them up
5:36
because pigeons absolutely love them uh
5:39
especially the ones that are bulbs
5:41
because they'll just come down and
5:43
they'll pull the bulbs out of the soil
5:45
uh so many people lose their onion bulbs
5:48
through this through pigeons pulling
5:50
them out and they're a booger for just
5:53
eating the tops off the onions and that
5:56
can damage them it can stop the plant
5:58
from growing properly
6:00
and that is really frustrating so make
6:02
sure you protect them from the pigeons
6:04
and stop them from getting at them so
6:07
hopefully we're going to be getting some
6:09
onions in this week another good one to
6:12
start at this time of year is spring
6:14
onions you can start your spring onions
6:16
again outside and I asked for gardening
6:20
tips the other day and somebody posted a
6:22
fantastic gardening tip for spring
6:24
onions they say not to grow spring
6:27
onions in rows but to plant so many in a
6:31
Pott and then once they started
6:35
germinating plant the colum into the
6:38
ground and let it grow as a clump rather
6:41
than as a RAR because when you're
6:43
picking spring onions you pick them as a
6:45
clump of spring onions really it's same
6:48
when you go in a shop they a clump of
6:49
spring onions so it's perfect really so
6:53
I'm going to try that this year and I do
6:55
love finding tips off other people um
6:59
again gardening you're always always
7:01
learning every single day of the year so
7:05
learning all these tips is fantastic
7:07
from other people and if you've got any
7:09
gardening tips and advice please do send
7:12
it mate I I do take everything on board
7:15
and I do appreciate it so please do send
7:17
your gardening tips and advice to me uh
7:20
I'm on Instagram and Facebook so send me
7:22
a message and I often reply to people so
7:25
please do that also um another good
7:29
thing to start at this time of year is
7:31
your broad beans if you've not started
7:33
your broad beans off through winter you
7:34
can be starting them off now in the
7:36
ground or a good way to start broad
7:39
beans sometimes is in pots because again
7:42
the pigeons can be a pain they'll eat
7:44
the tops off them and kill the plants
7:47
and also mice and rats love them as well
7:49
so growing them in pots you can grow
7:51
them to get them established and grow
7:54
well and then you can plant them out
7:56
where you want them to in evenly spaced
7:59
rows so yeah it's ways and roundabouts
8:02
really it's what you want to do
8:04
obviously if you're grow them in pots as
8:06
well you obviously have to use compost
8:07
but if you're grow them in the ground
8:09
you can sometimes get just grow them
8:12
straight in the soil so it's up to you
8:14
which way you want to do it another
8:16
thing good thing to grow at this time of
8:18
year is early peas now starting a batch
8:23
off now you can start some off in a few
8:27
weeks time as well you can plant them in
8:29
succession so that you get in a constant
8:31
Harvest of peas cuz all the peas seem to
8:33
be ready at the same time when you grow
8:35
them and obviously when you pick them
8:37
all at the same time that's it over and
8:39
done with so you want a few batches
8:43
growing along the allotment so maybe
8:45
start some off every couple of weeks and
8:49
further down your allotment plot so keep
8:52
them growing all all through the year
8:54
and yeah grow them in succession so then
8:57
you keep getting a harvest of piece and
8:59
if you're anything like me the peas
9:01
won't make it home the worst thing about
9:04
peas is trying them once they're ready
9:06
once you've tried them straight from the
9:08
Pod there is no going back they're so
9:11
juicy so tasty so delicious that they
9:15
you'll absolutely love them so yeah peas
9:19
are a good thing to grow at this time of
9:21
year outside so yeah that has been our
9:24
podcast for today it's been a nice short
9:26
little episode talking about what you
9:29
can so in this time of year and
9:33
obviously this is the second podcast of
9:35
the day if it has let me publish it uh
9:37
