What seeds can you sew in August for a
0:04
autumn crop? Welcome to Gardening with
0:08
Ben. And in today's video, we're going
0:09
to share with you the seeds that you can
0:12
sew this month in August ready for
0:16
growing throughout the autumn period.
0:19
So, make sure you've got a notebook and
0:21
make a note of this. Also, click the
0:23
save button to save it to watch back
0:25
later. and feel free to share it to
0:28
anybody into a lotment groups, gardening
0:30
groups, so that more people get sewing
0:33
this month. So, first up on the list is
0:37
Christmas potatoes. Now, Christmas
0:40
potatoes are amazing. Before they didn't
0:43
used to have seed potatoes at this year,
0:45
but it's getting more and more popular
0:47
to grow Christmas potatoes. So, have a
0:49
look online, look in the garden centers,
0:52
and purchase some Christmas potatoes.
0:55
Now what you need to do is you need to
0:57
sew them in tubs inside a poly tunnel as
1:00
the cold will kill them when it gets to
1:04
late September, October time when the
1:06
late nights and the cold nights get
1:09
frosty and you don't want them killing
1:12
off the plants. So sew them in tubs and
1:15
keep them in the poly tunnel. Keep them
1:17
watered and you will be harvesting a
1:19
crop at Christmas time.
1:22
Next up is beetroot. Now you need a fast
1:26
growing variety because the warmer
1:29
weather is starting to go towards the
1:31
end of August, September time. So you
1:34
need a fast variety that will grow like
1:36
bolt tarde which is absolutely amazing.
1:39
Next up is radish. Now radish always
1:42
grows really fast. So, if you're wanting
1:44
to add something to your salads, sew
1:47
some radish and you will be able to get
1:49
some great crops in just a few weeks.
1:52
Next up is spring onion. Now, spring
1:55
onion will grow fast. If you sew some
1:57
now, you will be harvesting them pretty
1:59
soon. They don't take ages to grow.
2:02
Hopefully, you'll get a harvest by end
2:04
of September, October time, and you will
2:06
be able to have them in salads. They
2:08
might not be massive, but you will
2:09
certainly get a good crop of spring
2:12
onions.
2:13
Next up is turnips. Now turnips are
2:16
quite fast at growing. So you'll be able
2:18
to harvest them around the end of
2:19
October, November time. So if you want
2:22
if you love your turnips, get some sewn
2:24
because now is the perfect time to grow
2:27
your turnips.
2:29
Next up is spinach. Now spinach usually
2:32
likes to bolt during the hot weather
2:34
time. So as it's starting hopefully
2:37
it'll start cooling down towards the end
2:39
of August time. But you can sew some
2:41
spinach now and you will be able to keep
2:44
getting continuous leaves for your meals
2:47
if you like spinach. Next up is lettuce.
2:51
Now you need to pick a a late variety of
2:54
seeds if you're wanting to grow some.
2:56
There's plenty of winter varieties of
2:58
lettuce out there. So if you wanting
3:00
some lettuce before the end of the year,
3:03
get sewing some now and you will be able
3:05
to get some winter lettuce. Next up is
3:08
pack choy. that I've never actually
3:10
tried growing myself. But I might give
3:12
it a try this month and see how we get
3:15
on with it. See if we get some good
3:16
crops from it and see what it tastes
3:19
like as I've never tasted pack choy
3:21
either. So yeah, if you're wanting to
3:23
try something new, give it a try and let
3:26
me know how you get on. Up another one
3:28
that I've not tried, but I have ordered
3:30
some seeds. So we're going to give it a
3:32
try this August time because I don't
3:34
usually grow much through the winter
3:36
period. Usually, it's just like garlic
3:38
and Christmas potatoes. But next up is
3:42
Chinese cabbage. Now, this sounds very
3:44
nice and it's good for the colder
3:46
weather. It's good for um through the
3:49
autumn winter period. So, if you're
3:51
wanting to try something, give it a try
3:54
and let's grow together and see if we
3:56
can get some Chinese cabbages growing.
3:59
And last up is kale. Now, kale can grow
4:02
through the winter period. It is a tough
4:04
plant and you can get great crops from
4:07
it throughout the winter period. So if
4:10
you're wanting to try something, give
4:11
kale a go. It's a great vegetable and it
4:14
can be used in many ways and it tastes
4:17
absolutely delicious as well. So give it
4:20
a try and try kale and see how you get
4:24
on. Now I just mentioned garlic. We
4:27
won't be planting our garlic till
4:28
October time. So, if you're wanting to
4:30
get ready, get some ordered and get it
4:33
ready for planting out in October. So,
4:36
this has been your video sharing with
4:39
you what you can sew in August. And
4:42
yeah, like I said, feel free to share it
4:44
out and give it a save. Leave a comment
4:47
below and let me know what you're sewing
4:49
this month down at the alotment garden.
4:52
Until next time, everyone, remember,
4:54
keep smiling, keep shining, and keep
4:56
gardening. Bad ass one.
