Let's get ready to plant our potatoes on
0:03
Good Friday next week. Everybody,
0:05
welcome to Gardening with Ben and we're
0:07
going to get ready for planting our
0:08
potatoes next week on Good Friday. So,
0:11
how do we get ready and what is it? What
0:14
you will need for growing your potatoes
0:18
this year? Well, we're going to be
0:19
growing ours in tubs as I do prefer to
0:21
grow them in tubs. I've grown them in
0:23
the ground in the past, but my issue is
0:25
that I usually when I dig them up, I
0:27
usually end up stabbing them or Yeah.
0:29
wire worm get them and there's holes in
0:31
them and I've grown them in tubs for the
0:33
last few years and they're perfect and
0:35
when they're ready you can just tip that
0:37
tub out and get the potatoes out nice
0:39
and easy without having to dig them up
0:41
and you can use that compost on your
0:43
beds as well as usually it's good still
0:46
to plant with. So we're going to be
0:49
growing ours in buckets. We've got these
0:51
from Oakland and as you can see they've
0:53
got plenty of drainage in the bottom.
0:56
These are from Oakland Gardens Limited
0:58
and these are absolutely amazing. We've
1:00
got 10 of these. So, we're going to be
1:02
planting probably about three in each
1:04
one as they're quite big and they will
1:06
get some great potatoes in them. You can
1:09
either start them off indoors in your
1:11
poly tunnel and then move them out when
1:13
it gets a bit warmer or you can just put
1:14
them straight outside. But make sure if
1:17
there's any green shoots coming over
1:18
them, get them covered back over with
1:21
compost because there's still frost
1:23
around and yeah, they can the frost can
1:26
kill the shoots which you don't want.
1:29
They're not winter hardy protected so
1:31
you don't want them getting destroyed by
1:33
frost. I saw of quite a few years ago
1:37
loads of people have planted them and we
1:39
had a late frost and it destroyed a lot
1:41
of people's potatoes. So make sure you
1:43
be careful of them. We'll also be using
1:46
potato fertilizer in them because
1:48
obviously they take a lot of nutrients
1:50
from the compost. So you need to have
1:52
some added nutrients in them. So let's
1:54
show you the potato fertilizer we are
1:56
using. This is the potato fertilizer
1:59
that we shall be using. Now what we'll
2:01
do is we'll put the potatoes on a layer
2:03
of compost. Sprinkle some of that around
2:05
the potatoes and then cover them over
2:08
with compost. And then when they get
2:11
growing and get going, we'll put some
2:12
more on top and keep them fed until
2:15
they're ready for growing just to give
2:17
them that little extra boost and
2:19
hopefully produce bigger and better
2:21
crops because that's what you want. Lots
2:23
and lots of potatoes. Now, potatoes are
2:26
my favorite thing. I love them in the
2:28
air fryer. They're absolutely gorgeous.
2:30
And yeah, we have so many potatoes every
2:33
single year. And I even grow Christmas
2:36
potatoes cuz I love potatoes that much.
2:38
So, we'll be growing Christmas potatoes
2:40
again this year in the poly tunnel. So,
2:42
let's show you the potatoes that we've
2:46
So, these are the potatoes that we've
2:47
got from Jameson Brothers. Absolutely
2:50
amazing potatoes. And as you can see,
2:52
they are chitten. You don't want them
2:54
where they're long and spangly as that's
2:57
not what you want. You're just wanting
2:58
the small little chits on top like they
3:00
look blackened, but that's how they are.
3:03
That's perfect. And obviously when you
3:05
plant them, plant them so that the
3:07
shoots are facing up to help with the
3:10
growth. We've had these in here about
3:13
two months now. So yeah, absolutely
3:15
loads of potatoes growing. So these are
3:17
going to be absolutely perfect for in
3:22
So like I said, we're going to be
3:24
planting these on Good Friday next week.
3:26
And I can't wait to get these growing.
3:28
Absolutely amazing. And we'll have these
3:31
outside because I can't get to the plot
3:33
every week. So, we need the rain more to
3:35
keep them watered and keep them growing
3:37
and hopefully keep them shooting. If I
3:39
notice any green shoots popping through
3:41
the top of the compost, I'll put extra
3:43
layer of compost on top to protect them
3:45
from the frost because we don't want the
3:47
frost killing them off and destroying
3:49
them. And yeah, they'll be ready around
3:51
June, July time. We've got earies, main
3:54
crop, and second earies as well. And the
3:57
meaning of that is because they're all
3:59
ready at different times. They all take
4:01
different times to grow. So obviously
4:03
your earies are first and then your
4:04
second earies and then your main crop
4:06
are later. They take longer to grow. And
4:08
the usual way that I find out that
4:10
they're ready to harvest is because the
4:13
plant dies off. Once the plant dies off,
4:15
that is usually when they're ready for
4:17
harvesting. Uh so that you don't have to
4:19
feel around to see if they're big enough
4:21
or ready enough. I just let the plant
4:22
die off and that is when I harvest them.
4:25
So yeah, make sure you stay tuned for
4:27
next week for when we plant them and
4:29
sharing with you all what we get up to.
4:31
So until next time everyone remember
4:33
keep smiling, keep shining and keep
4:34
gardening with Ben everyone.
