Rushing gardening jobs in January in the
0:03
UK causes problems later every single
0:07
year. Welcome to Gardening with Ben.
0:09
We're talking about rushing jobs down at
0:12
the plot today and down at the aotment.
0:16
obviously, we're getting close to sewing
0:19
season in March. It's going to be a very
0:22
mental time down here at the pot. We're
0:24
going to be sewing hundreds of packets
0:26
of seeds and getting them all sewn and
0:30
then once they're all growing, putotted
0:32
on, keep them all watered. And yeah,
0:34
it's going to be a busy time during
0:36
March, April, and May with all the
0:38
sewing and the potting on and everything
0:40
before we plant them out at the end of
0:42
May. I'm up north, so I don't plan out
0:44
until the end of May because that's when
0:46
the chance of frost has passed here up
0:49
north. So yeah, it can be a busy time
0:52
during them months. And some people
0:56
think, oh, I'll have a head start and
0:58
start sewing my seeds in January time.
1:01
Some seeds you can sew this month, like
1:03
your oberines, your peppers, and your
1:05
chilies. But make sure they have enough
1:07
light and warmth to get growing, but
1:10
hold off on the other seeds, especially
1:12
like tomatoes. I don't sew mine until
1:15
March because then they get good
1:17
strength. They grow well. They're not
1:19
leggy and yeah, they grow a lot better
1:22
in March time and they soon catch up as
1:24
well and they'll get growing pretty well
1:28
and strong and hopefully produce lots of
1:30
fruit all the way up to October. So,
1:33
it's a case of not rushing with sewing
1:35
your seeds. Now, a lot of seed packets
1:37
do say like start them off in January,
1:40
February time, but I tend to hold off.
1:43
That's sometimes more for the warmer
1:45
areas like Cornwall which is a bit
1:47
warmer but not up north. So sometimes
1:50
waiting is best and like I said things
1:53
will soon catch up with growing down at
1:56
the pot. So it's a case of not being
1:58
eager and not getting too fast in
2:03
growing stuff really. I know it's
2:05
tempting to get things started and get
2:07
things growing early so that you're not
2:09
having to do much later on, but waiting
2:12
that extra bit of time is a lot better.
2:14
Now, I used to do that when I first got
2:16
my plot. Used to read the seed packets
2:18
and think, "Oh, I can start that this
2:20
month." But then I learned over the
2:22
years that it's not best to it's best to
2:24
wait until the warmer months in March.
2:27
And yeah, sometimes we get a little heat
2:29
wave which will help with germination.
2:32
And that's what I've done for about 15
2:34
16 years now. I start things off in
2:36
March. Um there's not much to be doing
2:39
down at the plot in January and February
2:41
time. I use this time as a time for
2:43
preparation and doing any improvements
2:45
down at the plot and just being outside
2:48
in the fresh air because winter can be a
2:50
dull and miserable month. And it's good
2:53
to be outside and good to be in the
2:55
fresh air and just enjoy being in the
2:57
garden during these months as well. So
3:00
don't rush. Take your time because the
3:04
busy months are ahead. So just enjoy the
3:07
quiet time of January and February. And
3:10
then get ready for the mad mission of
3:13
March in sewing all those seeds. So sit
3:16
back, relax, and enjoy the time before
3:19
it gets busy. Make sure you drop us a
3:22
follow to stay up to date with all our
3:23
videos and when we're going to be sewing
3:25
all our seeds. Until next time everyone,
3:27
remember keep smiling, keep shining, and
3:29
keep gardening with bed everyone.
