Let's sew our broad beans. Welcome to
0:03
Gardening with Ben. And today we're
0:05
going to be sewing our broad beans.
0:07
We're now in autumn. And when you're
0:09
sewing broad beans in autumn, you need
0:12
to make sure that you look for a hardy
0:14
variety of broad bean. Now, this is the
0:16
aquadullus, which is hardy to frost and
0:19
to cold and to the snow, obviously. So,
0:22
you need a good broad bean to be able to
0:25
do that. So, make sure that it's an
0:27
autumn growing variety. And the best
0:30
thing about growing broad beans in the
0:32
autumn is that they're ready to harvest
0:34
before the blackfire appear. As you
0:36
know, if you sew broad beans in like
0:38
March, April time and you're harvesting
0:40
them in summer, they're covered with
0:42
blackfly, which is absolutely awful. So,
0:44
these will be ready to harvest before
0:46
the blackfly appear and you won't get
0:48
swamped with them. And it's something
0:50
else to grow during the autumn, winter
0:53
months along with all your garlic and
0:54
your onions, etc. So, it's something
0:57
else to grow. Now, you can either grow
1:00
these in containers like in troughs, uh,
1:02
place them in a row, or you can grow
1:05
them in the ground outside, whichever is
1:07
best for you. Now, we're going to be
1:09
growing ours in our poly tunnel as I'm
1:12
going to be doing a lot of work outside
1:13
in my a lotment during the winter time.
1:16
So, I want it all as clear as possible.
1:19
And obviously, it's a bit warmer in
1:20
here, so hopefully we'll get some great
1:22
crops. And it's making use of this poly
1:24
tunnel in the winter time now that I've
1:25
got all my new raised beds in. Now, if
1:28
you're sewing them in the ground
1:30
outside, I would suggest starting them
1:32
off in pots first to grow them because
1:36
during the winter months, there's not
1:38
much food around for predators like
1:40
birds or for squirrels or for rats and
1:44
mice. So, if they see a shoot popping
1:46
up, they'll probably nibble it or dig to
1:50
find the bean and pinch it. So, you
1:52
don't want to do that. So you want to
1:54
grow them to a good size first before
1:57
planting them. And once they get to a
1:59
good size, then plant them outside where
2:01
you want them to grow or in your poly
2:04
tunnel. That is what I'd suggest what
2:06
you do. And you'll get better success
2:08
doing that as you don't want them all
2:09
getting pinched by the squirrels or the
2:11
mice. And yeah, you'll get some great
2:13
crops from them. So let's get these sewn
2:16
and let's get these growing.
2:20
Now, we're going to be sewing ours in
2:22
some individual cells. These quite deep,
2:24
so they're pretty good for growing broad
2:27
beans in. Now, I'm going to be putting a
2:29
few in each one as obviously I don't
2:31
want to use loads of trays and loads of
2:33
compost. So, we're going to place a few
2:35
in each tray and then when they're
2:36
ready, then we'll divide them and we'll
2:38
plant them outside. So, let's get all
2:41
our broad beans placed and let's get
2:44
So, these are the variety that I'm
2:46
growing, the Aquadulus. Absolutely
2:48
fantastic variety. Like I said, winter
2:50
hard day, so it's absolutely perfect. So
2:52
October to February. So these I've
2:56
placed them two in a pack, so they're
2:58
pretty spaced apart. So we're going to
3:00
cover them with compost, keep them
3:02
watered, then when they're big enough,
3:04
then we'll separate them all out and we
3:06
will plant them into our raised beds.
3:09
And there we have it all covered over.
3:11
So all we've got to do is keep them
3:13
watered. And once they're big enough,
3:15
then we'll separate them all out.
3:18
So, that is all our tips and advice for
3:21
growing broad beans through the autumn
3:23
winter period. Like I said, it's
3:24
something to keep you growing throughout
3:28
the winter period. There's not much to
3:29
be growing through the autumn winter.
3:31
So, it's one thing to keep growing in
3:33
the a lotment and garden. And obviously,
3:36
broad beans are good with your Sunday
3:37
dinner and with meals and like that. So,
3:39
it's a great thing to grow and you'll
3:41
get some great crops from them. You'll
3:42
get an abundance of broad beans as long
3:45
as you keep them watered and keep them
3:47
alive. And obviously through the autumn
3:49
winter period, you don't need to water
3:50
them that much because there's plenty of
3:51
rain. So that will keep them well
3:53
watered and you should get some great
3:55
crops. But obviously with me growing
3:57
them indoors, I'll need to keep them
3:58
watered throughout the autumn winter
4:01
period as it stays dry in the poly
4:03
tunnel at the moment. So while the
4:05
roof's working, but yeah, absolutely a
4:08
fantastic thing to do. So, that is one
4:11
thing that I would continue to grow
4:13
throughout the autumn winter period if
4:14
you're wanting to keep sewing and keep
4:16
growing. [snorts] So, let me know in the
4:18
comments if you're going to be growing
4:20
any broad beans down at your aotment.
