and let's enjoy today's episode hello
0:25
and welcome to gardening with Ben for a
0:29
new episode well today it's Wednesday
0:32
and yeah the weather has certainly been
0:36
warming up it well it has here in
0:38
Sheffield and unfortunately I was
0:41
working yesterday so I didn't manage to
0:43
get out in the nice warm weather but I'm
0:46
off at the weekend and the weather looks
0:48
like it's still going to be staying warm
0:50
so that means time to get lots and lots
0:53
of jobs done down at the allotment which
0:55
I'm certainly looking forward to already
0:58
and this nicer weather certain makes you
1:00
feel hell of a lot better than the dark
1:03
miserable days and yeah it really does
1:06
help your mental health being out in the
1:09
alotment and being in the garden in the
1:11
fresh air now I am certainly feeling
1:15
inspired now if you didn't see my post
1:19
on Facebook and Instagram last night if
1:22
you have not watched love your garden
1:25
grow your own what was on ITV last night
1:28
make sure you're watch watch it on
1:30
catchup because it was a fantastic
1:33
episode it was hosted by Alan TI Marsh
1:37
and it had Kate G away in it as
1:40
well and yeah it certainly inspired me
1:45
more for my gardening and to try new
1:49
things because Alan titch msh yeah he's
1:52
been gardening for years and years and
1:55
years he's one of the legendary
1:57
gardening shows uh somebody that's been
2:00
around for much longer than anyone else
2:02
on the TV as you all know and he was
2:07
turning his a plot of land on his garden
2:11
into a kitun garden and obviously you
2:14
think oh it's an IT Marshal know
2:16
everything about gardening well he
2:19
didn't he didn't know everything about
2:21
growing veg which amazed me because he
2:26
were planting seeds and plants that
2:30
never heard of before or different
2:32
varieties that he'd never seen before
2:35
and it just go to show that full-time
2:40
gardeners and celebrity gardeners don't
2:43
know everything and he was showing new
2:48
vegetables what he was trying he was
2:50
trying some radish what are meant to be
2:54
like watermelons when you cut inside
2:55
them the color of them and yeah those
2:59
absolutely
3:00
failed he showed the results of him and
3:03
they did absolutely rubbish uh but it
3:06
was good because he was showing that not
3:10
everything works when you do gardening
3:12
not everything is successful and you can
3:15
have failures when gardening and quite a
3:18
lot of us do and sometimes these
3:20
gardeners will only show you all the
3:23
good things they won't show you the
3:25
failures but Alan tich Marsh last night
3:28
you were fantastic he was he just T said
3:32
it how it was he wasn't using technical
3:35
terms or anything like that he was
3:38
straight down to the mark and that's
3:41
what I get a lot of people saying to me
3:42
that I'm not over the top with technical
3:46
stuff with gardening it's all basic
3:50
stuff what I talk
3:51
about and that's what I find passionate
3:54
about it I've not done any degrees on
3:56
gardening or uh got any qualifications
3:59
on it it's all stuff I've taught myself
4:03
yes I do want to learn more about
4:05
gardening and different stuff on
4:07
gardening but I'll do that over time and
4:10
I'll keep learning bits more all the
4:13
time and that's what I'm doing as I'm
4:15
doing these podcast I do look up stuff
4:17
and I do research stuff and if there's a
4:20
new vegetable that I'm trying to grow
4:22
I'll read about it and I'll look it up
4:26
and obviously then I'll feed it back to
4:28
you as well and and he he were trying he
4:32
tried some new strawberries uh which are
4:35
called Pineberries and they were a white
4:38
strawberry and you meant to plant them
4:40
with red ones to help them pollinate
4:43
them and yeah it never actually showed
4:46
the results of them ones so whether they
4:48
actually grew or not I don't know or
4:50
whether I missed that bit in the episode
4:53
but I know there pineapples as well what
4:56
taste of pineapple as well I think
4:58
they're the pine pine Berry ones but
5:01
yeah these new varieties coming out all
5:03
the time and he showed um these what are
5:08
meant to be meter long beans what they
5:12
grow in
5:13
America and literally the plant was a
5:16
little stub it did absolutely shocking
5:19
it was a rubbish outcome whatsoever but
5:22
it were great to see him try stuff and
5:25
it fail uh because yeah stuff does not
5:29
work all the time when
5:32
gardening
5:33
and he was showing that he was growing
5:37
60 different varieties of fruit and
5:40
vegetables in this small area and it was
5:43
fantastic to see him making full use of
5:47
all his garden and he'd not spent loads
5:50
doing it all he just created some raised
5:52
beds and filled them with compost and
5:55
yeah it just gardened uh it didn't spend
5:59
thousands of pounds doing it all up and
6:01
getting it ready um it was quite basic
6:05
but then he was explaining more about
6:11
growing your own Tomatoes versus shop
6:14
bought tomatoes and he did an example he
6:17
cut a shop bought tomato in half and a
6:21
tomato that he grew himself and he just
6:23
showed the difference of what it looks
6:26
like when you grow it and how juicy they
6:31
are when you grow them because like you
6:33
said in the show is that when you
6:37
actually grow vegetables yourself you
6:41
pick them when they're ripe and when
6:43
they're most juiciest and ready whereas
6:46
if you buy shop bought vegetables and
6:49
fruit they pick them before they ripen
6:53
and that is true when because they've
6:56
got to pick them before they ripen so
6:58
that they can send them and ship them
7:00
over and they'll be ready in time for
7:03
you to eat them because if they picked
7:05
them when they were ripe they'd be
7:07
rotten by the time you bought them so
7:09
they wouldn't be ready and that is why
7:13
homegrown fruit and vegetables taste so
7:16
much nicer than the shop boo ones and it
7:19
just goes for any sorts of vegetables
7:22
and he was growing CET and he says yeah
7:26
they don't look perfect shapes but
7:28
you're not b buying them from a
7:30
supermarket you've grown them yourself
7:32
why do you have to have perfectly shaped
7:35
fruit and
7:36
vegetables to selling a shop and
7:40
possibly the reason is because people
7:41
only buy they're that used to
7:44
seeing proper looking vegetables that
7:47
they don't buy
7:49
the uh disformed ones and I know one of
7:53
the supermarkets um they started selling
7:57
at wonky vegetables and there selling
7:59
them cheaper rather than the farmers
8:02
losing the money and wasting all the
8:05
crops because they've grown wonky
8:08
Farmers can't help it if something grows
8:10
wonky or if it don't grow straight or if
8:13
it grows a bit uneven and they waste
8:17
loads and loads of vegetables chucking
8:20
it away because it's not a perfect shape
8:24
for the supermarkets to sell them and it
8:27
just baffles me how much stuff is weting
8:29
ed through growing your own stuff and
8:34
there's a charity in Sheffield uh it's
8:38
part of the Food Works I think it is and
8:41
they ask allotments to grow one bed for
8:46
them so that they can have the produce
8:50
to help people that are struggling to
8:52
buy meals and that are homeless and
8:54
stuff like that and yeah it's a
8:57
fantastic idea and and when you grow in
9:00
your own veg you will have an abundance
9:02
of stuff and you won't be able to eat it
9:05
all so it's good to support Charities as
9:08
well so that was Allan's own garden and
9:14
then we then they started talking about
9:17
Kate gay as well and as you will know
9:21
Kate gay her husband was probably one of
9:24
the worst survivors husbands from Co
9:29
that survived a bad experience and is
9:33
still suffering now and she was showing
9:36
how much she's started getting into
9:39
gardening and she's transformed her
9:42
garden to make it
9:45
more better for the mind to eat for
9:50
aroma therapy and stuff like that and
9:53
she created this Tea Garden so that she
9:56
could use the herbs and bits in her
9:59
Garden to make teas and stuff like that
10:02
and make the full use of them and she'd
10:05
also created a patch for um medicines
10:10
and to use to make oils and she showed
10:13
an example of where she growing some
10:16
lavender and she dried the lavender out
10:19
and then she put the lavender in with
10:23
some vodka and she made her own room
10:27
spray out of it and and she said it
10:30
smell absolutely fantastic and I never
10:33
knew that lavender
10:35
was used in the olden days for
10:39
antibacteria uh it you they used to use
10:41
it and rub things down with it and it
10:44
had been an
10:45
antibacteria so it's stuff that I
10:48
learned I learned so much from that TV
10:51
show uh it was
10:54
amazing and it was good to see as well
10:58
uh she was planting stuff as well that
11:01
I'd not heard of before and there was a
11:05
berry what she planted called the
11:07
honeyberry which I'm going to look into
11:09
getting for my
11:10
allotment um and it's meant to be like a
11:13
cross between a blue bra and a raspberry
11:18
I think it was something like that but
11:20
it's crossed between two fruits and it's
11:23
meant to be the three times better for
11:26
you than a blueberry and blue
11:29
blueberries are classed as one of the
11:31
best fruits out there so I'm going to
11:34
get one of these honey berries for my
11:36
plot it certainly got me into getting
11:39
them and it was fantastic I I I really
11:43
can't speak highly of the episode
11:47
um so much that I learned from it and
11:51
also it was good to see Alan tit Mar Us
11:53
in uh they showed you the seed packet is
11:56
what he was uh that he used uh and some
12:00
of them were advertised as the branding
12:03
um obviously they got paid to advertise
12:05
them ones which was suon seeds uh but
12:09
some of the packets had a yellow bottom
12:12
on them and I know those packets are
12:15
from Kitchen Garden Magazine so it just
12:18
go to show Alan TI Marsh get some from
12:20
these uh magazines as well and one thing
12:24
that he did point out from this episode
12:28
is that
12:32
he you can try growing stuff what you
12:36
wouldn't see in the supermarkets
12:39
varieties you would not see and that is
12:42
the thing that I always go on about when
12:44
I'm gardening is that you're growing
12:46
stuff you wouldn't see in the
12:48
supermarkets different varieties and
12:50
that's why I tried the purple
12:51
cauliflower because I got it free in a
12:54
magazine and I absolutely loved it it
12:57
grew tons better than the white
12:59
cauliflower it was
13:00
fantastic and one of my followers uh
13:03
messaged me and asked me to send them a
13:05
link to this purple caulifower because
13:08
they could not see it online so I just
13:11
searched through Amazon and sent them
13:13
the
13:14
link but it's good to
13:16
see a celebrity like Al TI Marsh Getting
13:20
Back to Basics and encouraging people to
13:24
grow stuff on their allotments and in
13:27
the garden now I put it out to my my
13:29
Facebook followers and Instagram
13:30
followers last night and said have you
13:32
been watching it it's
13:34
fantastic and obviously a lot of those
13:37
on my Facebook and Instagram are Keen
13:40
gardeners as well and they were just
13:42
going on saying that there's so much to
13:45
learn from gardening you never stop
13:48
learning there's so much out there to
13:51
learn and new stuff to learn and
13:53
everybody was encouraged by this TV show
13:57
it was so amazing
14:01
and I I've just got to say that it's
14:06
really good
14:08
how they got inspired from it everybody
14:11
in the Facebook comments was saying how
14:14
much it's inspired them to get started
14:16
in the garden and encouraging them to
14:18
get going and Get Growing again and the
14:22
sort of stuff what I saw in it it's
14:25
certainly inspired me I'm going to be
14:27
watching that episode again and making
14:30
notes on it and trying to use some of
14:33
the tips that Kate gay and Allen Marsh
14:36
said in this episode and try and learn
14:39
from it and try and do some of the
14:42
things that they've grown in it as well
14:44
so I'm going to be adding more things to
14:46
my shopping list to add to my allotment
14:50
so watch this space over the coming
14:52
months as I try and get some more stuff
14:55
for my plot and
14:57
yeah I I I do recommend that you do
15:00
watch this episode from last night uh
15:03
you'll be able to find it on the ITV Hub
15:05

15:09

16:02
with how well it's coming on this year I
16:04
can really concentrate on putting all
16:07
this effort that I'm seeing on these TV

16:14
I'm definitely looking forward to
16:15
reaping the benefits this summer from my
16:18

16:20
in the effort into the plot and enjoying

fantastically interested at this time of
16:45
life uh some may really enjoy it and
16:49
love to pick the Harvest and the crops
16:51
and get everything from it but then
16:54
later on in life they'll think about it
16:57
and they'll come back to it and they'll
16:59
carry on doing what you taught them and
17:03
that that's something that will last
