0:36
have been up to on the alarm so sit back
0:40
grab a brute and enjoy today's
0:45
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben well the weekend's
0:50
here yes the weekend has finally come
0:54
that means I will be going down to the
0:55
allotment today to get lots more jobs
0:58
done which I can't wait to to do the
1:00
week has been a long time coming it
1:03
seems to go forever now now that I'm
1:05
only off at weekends and now that I'm
1:07
only spending two days there a week but
1:11
it builds the excitement of getting back
1:13
there to see what's happening and see
1:15
what's growing and what's not
1:17
growing so yeah I hope that you've
1:20
enjoyed all the podcasts this week and
1:23
found something useful for them like I
1:25
said we're getting these podcasts out
1:27
every single day now for you to listen
1:29
to so plenty to catch up on whether
1:32
you're catching up today on all the
1:34
episodes or whether you listen every day
1:37
I hope that you do enjoy them and yeah
1:41
keep liking them keep sharing them and
1:43
keep leaving comments on
1:46
them so what are we going to be talking
1:50
about today well we're going to be
1:51
talking about all the jobs which we're
1:53
going to be doing down at the allotment
1:55
this weekend fingers crossed we can get
1:58
plenty done and and yeah these next
2:00
couple of next few episodes we'll be
2:03
talking about all the things that's
2:04
happening what we've been getting up to
2:05
while we being at the allotment as
2:07
obviously it's the weekend and then
2:09
usually in the week we talk about
2:11
different topics so what's our plan for
2:15
this weekend well I said that we weren't
2:18
that would not had any Frost yet but the
2:22
temperatures are going to dip this
2:24
weekend to zero so I've seen so it's
2:26
looking like the frost May well and
2:28
truly be on its way
2:30
so if you have anything that you want to
2:33
protect or look after make sure you
2:35
either dig them up and bring them into
2:37
the greenhouse or poly tunnel or make
2:40
sure that you fleece them at night
2:42
because the frost will particularly kill
2:45
them and that's the reason why obviously
2:47
I managed to get the geraniums in on
2:49
time and in my shed ready to protect
2:52
them throughout the winter period
2:53
fingers crossed we can keep them alive
2:56
it's a unheated Greenhouse but fingers
2:59
crossed we can can keep it warmish to
3:02
keep the geraniums alive and then we can
3:04
replant them out next year at the
3:07
allotment so what will our jobs be this
3:10
weekend well I know what the first job
3:12
will be when I get down to the allotment
3:14
and that will be filling my bird feeders
3:16
up like my obviously I only do them at
3:19
weekends and as soon as I've gone down
3:21
there they're all empty whether it's
3:23
being the birds whether it's been the
3:24
squirrels whether it's been anything
3:26
else that's got them uh I saw some magp
3:29
on them other day but yeah I'll be
3:31
filling all my bird feeders up and I won
3:34
a prize today on Instagram I entered a
3:37
competition you know where you like and
3:39
share and tag people on them and stuff
3:41
like that uh so I've won some uh bird
3:44
supplies bird feeder supplies so
3:46
hopefully we'll be getting them next
3:49
week so I'm looking forward to receiving
3:50
that prize and seeing exactly what I've
3:53
gotten it says it's a surprise so we'll
3:56
have to see exactly what it is that
3:58
we're going to win
4:00
fingers crossed it'll be pretty good but
4:02
I know it probably will be because I
4:04
know the company that I've won it from
4:06
so yeah hopefully we'll be getting some
4:08
nice Delights for our alotment to hang
4:11
up and show off and obviously I'll put
4:13
it into a video for you all to watch and
4:16
yeah we've been putting lots more videos
4:19
on there for to watch at the moment and
4:22
everybody's getting involved in my daily
4:23
real question which I'm really happy
4:25
about as I do it to get everybody else
4:29
involved in my posts what I put on
4:31
Facebook Instagram and YouTube so that
4:34
people can comment on them and I can see
4:36
what people like and do cuz sometimes it
4:39
just feels like I'm waffling on but I
4:41
like to hear what other people are
4:42
getting up to in the garden as well so
4:46
yeah we've be filling the bird feeders
4:48
up that's main thing we may even have a
4:50
bonfire down there this weekend as like
4:53
I said it's getting colder now so it's
4:55
nice to have a bonfire burning so that
4:57
you get a bit of a warm breeze blowing
5:00
over and obviously if you've got a
5:02
bonfire burning you can just keep
5:04
chucking in like the odd uh pieces of
5:06
wood and stuff like that bits of scrap
5:09
what you've got Le left around from your
5:11
wood pile or anything that's rotten or
5:15
obviously I put in my phones as well my
5:18
brambles because they won't compost very
5:22
well so certain stuff will'll put in
5:25
there to burn and get rid of and it's
5:27
always nice to have a bonfire yes you do
5:29
come home stinking a smoke uh but you
5:32
can't beat the good smell of a bonfire
5:35
while you're down at the alotment I'm
5:36
sure you'll all agree with me on that
5:38
one so yeah we have got lots to burn and
5:43
get rid of over this winter period we've
5:45
not got loads this year we had a massive
5:47
clear out last year but we've still got
5:49
quite a bit that we need to get rid of
5:51
and burn while we can because we're only
5:53
allowed to have bonfires on the
5:55
allotment between November and April I
5:59
think it is so you got to make the most
6:01
of it and try and get rid of anything
6:03
that's burnable as much as can while
6:06
you're at it but obviously make sure
6:08
you're careful because you might have
6:09
Wildlife nesting in Wood piles and stuff
6:12
like that so make sure you check it over
6:14
before you do burn anything in
6:17
particular so we'll be doing that and
6:20
our next main job like I say I use the
6:24
weekend I write myself a list of tasks
6:27
that I want to get done tasks that I
6:29
want get completed and tick them off as
6:33
I do them as I go along throughout the
6:34
weekend I don't set myself massive tasks
6:37
that I know that I'm not going to
6:39
complete I set myself small tasks so
6:41
that I know that I'm going to do them so
6:43
this weekend will be a job of Tiding
6:46
round where my fruit trees are as that
6:50
is where all my rhubarb grows as well
6:52
and like I said quite a few years ago I
6:55
spent a lot of money on this area I mem
6:58
brained it all to stop the week from
7:00
going through I paved it all for my
7:01
paths so that it's easier to walk on
7:05
I replanted all my rhubarb through holes
7:09
so that no weeds would grow through but
7:11
unfortunately certain ones do and the
7:14
ones that seem to grow through are the
7:15
brambles the brambles grew everywhere
7:19
unfortunately and they always manag to
7:21
find a way out there and what I usually
7:25
do at this time here I trim back all the
7:27
brambles I'm not able to dig them out
7:29
because cuz they're awkward to dig out
7:30
where they are so I usually trim them
7:33
right back to the ground and pull them
7:35
all out and I'll be covered in PHS and
7:37
spikes and stuff like that and I'll be
7:39
screaming blue murder all the way while
7:41
I'm doing it even though I've got gloves
7:43
on I'm sure I'll still get um Spike to
7:47
death from the brambles but we'll be
7:51
chopping all them out and usually it
7:53
lasts about a year uh I usually trim it
7:56
all back and they usually haven't grown
7:58
back fully
8:00
until the winter time so I I do this on
8:03
a yearly basis this little job and once
8:05
I've cleared it it seems to stay clear
8:08
and particularly good throughout the
8:09
year so I want to clear all that and I
8:12
want to clear all the leaves what have
8:13
fallen down around the fruit trees
8:15
because they can spread diseases if
8:17
you're not careful and if there's any
8:20
rotted fruit definitely they can spread
8:22
diseases so I want to make sure it's all
8:24
clear and fresh around there and cleared
8:29
and I might even if I do get any more
8:31
spring balls I'll be planting some down
8:34
the side of the fruit trees because I've
8:35
not got any down that side that's the
8:37
only area possibly that I've not got any
8:39
growing so we're going to be keeping his
8:42
eyes out for when they start to reduce
8:44
them at the end of the month last year
8:46
they reduced loads of tulips in the
8:48
bnq and we got loads last year so I'm
8:53
going to keep my eyes peeled for when
8:54
they start to reduce them and hopefully
8:57
fill that area where they're not
8:59
where I haven't got anything growing at
9:01
the
9:03
moment I'll still be waiting a few weeks
9:06
for all the leaves to drop off my fruit
9:08
trees like I showed on my tour video the
9:11
other day the apple tree cooking apple
9:14
tree is still full of leaves they're not
9:15
dying off yet but now that it's started
9:17
to get colder at night they might have
9:20
started dropping off now so once they're
9:22
fully clear what we'll be doing is we'll
9:24
be giving them a winter wash over the
9:28
winter period and it doesn't mean
9:30
scrubbing them down and washing them
9:31
down no there's like a formula what you
9:35
can buy online like on Amazon and you
9:38
just spray it over the trees and it
9:40
protects them from Winter moths and
9:43
stuff like that uh they like to nest in
9:45
the trees at this time you so it's just
9:47
spray them down to stop any bugs that
9:50
would attack your fuit when they start
9:52
to get ready and stuff like that and you
9:54
can also buy a sticky uh roll to R to
9:58
put around it and pop all around your
10:03
tree to stop anything from crawling up
10:05
them I do this every year so I'll be
10:07
taking my old ones off putting fresh
10:09
ones on to protect him from stopping
10:12
anything from crawling up the tree from
10:14
eating it obviously that'll stop like
10:16
ants and stuff like that just crawling
10:18
up and getting them obviously you can't
10:21
protect all your fruit you they will get
10:24
attacked from like wasps and stuff like
10:26
that they'll eat them and bu themselves
10:29
in it's the woodlice that I have the
10:30
main trouble with on my apples woodlice
10:33
seem to love apples for some reason and
10:36
they just bury the themselves in the car
10:39
and eat the themselves eat the way into
10:41
them so I'm going to have to look at
10:43
them and try and work out a plan to stop
10:45
the wood lice from crawling up so we're
10:49
going to be clearing all around the
10:50
fruit trees getting all that done and
10:53
one of the other jobs what we'll
10:55
hopefully do is carry on clearing some
10:57
more paths as do a bit more every week
11:00
of my paths tidying that up so we'll be
11:03
clearing some more of the paths getting
11:05
them tidied up all the beds are
11:07
completely clear now they're absolutely
11:09
weed free no old vegetables are growing
11:12
in there they're all completely clear
11:15
all we've got to do for them is just
11:16
keep hoing them and digging them over
11:19
every few weeks to stop any more weeds
11:21
from growing them and obviously any
11:23
Roots taking place cuz there is a lot of
11:26
bind weed on my allotment so we need to
11:28
keep them band weed Roots out while we
11:31
can during the winter months and
11:33
obviously the cold and frost will kill
11:35
off the band weed Roots if we dig it
11:37
over so we need to get as much out as
11:40
possible while we can that'll hopefully
11:42
push back the growth of the bind weed on
11:44
my
11:46
allotment and what else are we planning
11:49
on doing this weekend I've nothing that
11:52
needs potting up I might have
11:55
some other plants in my shed whaty
11:58
potting up uh
12:00
like my um what are they
12:03
called I can't F of the names but yeah
12:07
I've got a few more flowers that might
12:08
need potted up we did a Salvia last
12:10
weekend we repotted all that up we
12:12
potted all as geraniums up um but yeah I
12:17
might put some more flowers up this
12:18
weekend up my allotment but obviously
12:21
I'll be filming lots of content at the
12:23
allotment this weekend try and record
12:26
six videos to pop out next week on my
12:28
YouTube channel as I tend to do a lot of
12:30
the recording at the weekend like six
12:32
episodes at the weekend so that I can
12:34
publish them every day in the week so
12:36
that you've always got something to
12:38
watch and keep your eyes peeled on so
12:42
hopefully we'll get lots of stuff done
12:45
at the allotment this week while we can
12:47
while the weather's still decent like I
12:48
said we've still not had any rain yet
12:51
it's still not come maybe I need to
12:52
start singing to get some M to come uh
12:55
so we'll have to water our onions and
12:57
we'll have to water our garlic this
12:59
weekend as well because we've not had no
13:01
rain all weekend all week should I say
13:04
so we're going to have to do some
13:06
watering this weekend so yeah that is
13:09
everything that I'm going to be getting
13:11
up to down at the allotment this weekend
13:14
so make sure you stay tuned for
13:15
tomorrow's episode and you'll be able to
13:17
find out what I've done at the allotment
13:19
today and sharing with you everything
13:22
that I've successfully done and
13:24
hopefully cracked on with uh got got on
13:27
with it because knowing me I'll get down
13:29
to the allotment and I'll find another
13:30
job to do so make sure you stay tuned to
13:33

13:36
the allotment so if you have enjoyed
