📖 Where It All Began at the Allotment Garden! Every journey has a starting point — here’s a look back at where mine began on the plot. 🌿💚 In this reflective episode, I share the story of how I first got my allotment, what it looked like back then, the early challenges I faced, and the small victories that sparked a passion for growing. It’s a reminder that every gardener starts somewhere — weeds, wonky rows and all! Where did your allotment or gardening story begin? #AllotmentJourney #WhereItAllBegan #GrowYourOwn #AllotmentLife #GardeningWithBen #UKGardener #GardenInspiration

0:25
and welcome back to gardening with Ben
0:28
it's Thursday it's nearly the weekend
0:32
and hopefully the better weather will
0:34
come because yesterday was absolutely
0:37
awful I think the weatherman has finally
0:40
realized that I'm working so he's
0:44
sending the rain while I'm working on
0:46
shift because it never seems to rain
0:49
when I'm off thankfully touch wood I
0:51
feel fell lucky this week with the
0:55
weather one of the days it was
0:57
absolutely boiling but yesterday it was
1:00
chuing it down all day so hopefully it
1:03
will help water in all the new plants
1:06
that have been planted and it's not it
1:09
is cold but it's not that cold so
1:11
hopefully it will get them waking up and
1:14
get them growing again and I'm looking
1:17
forward to my gra Vine waking up and
1:20
starting to grow as it does look quite
1:24
dormant at the minute my followers did
1:26
tell me that that's how it's meant to
1:28
look and it will start to wake up soon I
1:32
have put a plastic clutch over the top
1:34
of it to give it a bit more warmth to
1:37
help say wakey wakey It's Time to Get
1:40
Growing so hopefully that extra bit of
1:44
warmth will get it growing and get it
1:46
going faster really because I do want
1:49
some good grapes on it and I realize I
1:52
won't get many grapes on it for a few
1:55
years um so hopefully in a couple of
1:59
years time we be picking some decent
2:01
grapes off
2:03
them so what are we talking about today
2:07
well I had a lot of feedback from
2:09
yesterday's episode if you've not
2:11
listened to it yet make sure you go and
2:13
check it out it's talking all about The
2:17
Love yard Garden episode what was on the
2:19
TV the other night with Alan titch Marsh
2:23
and Kate gway and wow was it an amazing
2:27
episode everybody agreed how good it was
2:30
they weren't a bad word said whatsoever
2:33
about that episode and I learned so much
2:36
from it and I'm sure all the my
2:38
followers learned so much from it and
2:41
there's so much out there that can be
2:43
learned from that episode so if you've
2:45
got the ITV Hub go and check out the
2:48
love your garden episode and one thing
2:51
that I got from that episode is that
2:54
they were talking about honey be honey
2:57
berries I think they're called and it's
2:59
something I've never seen before and
3:02
apparently it's um a cross between a
3:04
blue Bri and another fruit and it's just
3:08
amazing how good they are fire they're
3:12
three times better than blueberries in
3:17
how good and healthy they are for you so
3:19
I'm going to go out and purchase a
3:21
couple of those I think that's on my
3:23
shopping list next and yes I do keep
3:26
buying more and more plants to go on my
3:28
plot but it's something that I want to
3:31
do like I said buying fruit plant you
3:34
reap the rewards from it and you get
3:37
your money back from it because like my
3:39
allotment it costs me 90 a year and I
3:43
definitely get £90 worth of fuit off my
3:46
plot uh if not quadruple the amount in
3:50
uh fruit of it so I definitely get my
3:52
money's worth from the
3:55
allotment so watching that episode made
3:59
me
4:00
want to talk about where it all began
4:02
with me on the allotment I've talked
4:05
about this before and I've got a lot of
4:07
new followers now and subscribers on
4:10
this YouTube so I thought it'd be good
4:12
just to go over my backstory and what
4:16
I've been through and where it all began
4:18
to be honest because it is quite
4:20
interesting um you never know one day it
4:23
might be in a book I doubt it somehow I
4:26
don't think anyone's going to sign
4:28
gardening with Ben up for book yet but
4:31
yeah um it all started way way way back
4:35
ago back when I was a child back when I
4:38
was young back when I was didn't have a
4:43
beard back when I was only small now I'm
4:48
6'5 but yeah it started way way back and
4:52
I was about 12 years old
4:56
and there was an allotment site near me
5:00
and the council was putting adverts up
5:04
because there was only one person left
5:05
on this allotment uh somebody had been
5:08
in touch with the council and they
5:09
talked to this one person that were left
5:11
on this plot and this person said that
5:14
if
5:15
nobody else takes on the plots they're
5:18
going to get rid of it because nobody
5:19
was taking up the allotments it was just
5:22
a de deric ground it were Baron uh just
5:25
Wasteland and this chap said to the
5:29
council
5:30
if you can clear it I will get the
5:32
allotment site full again and there was
5:37
a list up of vacant plots that were
5:40
going to become available and my dad put
5:43
his name down for one and he was
5:45
successful and they joined a committee
5:48
and they helped get the allotment site
5:52
up and running they got funding in to
5:54
get new roads in get water pipes put in
5:58
for stand pipes and yeah they got the
6:01
allotment turned around and back in use
6:04
again and it were fantastic because
6:07
everybody had that same vision nobody
6:09
knew about gardening and growing their
6:11
own vegetables it was all new to them so
6:14
everybody was in the same boat and
6:15
everybody had that excitement when they
6:17
moved onto the site and it became a
6:20
great Community uh with all these new
6:23
people and we're having barbecues and
6:27
little parties and stuff like that and
6:29
getting to know one another they even
6:32
had a special open day where the May
6:34
came and officially reopened the
6:36
allotment site and yeah it was a
6:39
fantastic community and I used to help
6:42
my dad on the alotment every weekend
6:45
helping doing the weeding obviously
6:47
doing all the jobs that he didn't want
6:48
to do uh but yeah I had I had to go
6:52
growing some seeds and stuff and my dad
6:54
was showing me what to do and then I
6:56
must have got to like 16 177 and I
7:00
thought why am I helping my dad on his
7:02
plot when when I turn 18 I can get my
7:05
own allotment and bear in mind I was
7:07
still living at home at these at this
7:10
rate and obviously being an 18yar old
7:14
you want somewhere to escape till
7:16
somewhere that you can just chill out
7:17
and your parents aren't around so you
7:19
can just do what you want relax not get
7:23
nagged not get bossed around but yeah um
7:28
it were nice so I applied for this plot
7:31
and I got it and luckily enough it was
7:34
bang opposite my dad's plot um and I got
7:39
into the gardening and first off I
7:43
planted uh some fruit trees I planted a
7:46
nectarine a cooking Apple a
7:50
cherry and a plum tree and I've no
7:55
longer got the cherry and I've no longer
7:57
got the nectarine they didn't do
7:59
anything very good so I got rid of them
8:02
and I planted some rhubarb I bought some
8:05
rhubarb to start off with I bought my
8:07
Autumn
8:09
raspberries I purchased 16 strawberry
8:13
plants and that's all I started off with
8:15
on my plot and I've still got the
8:18
strawberry plants I've still got the
8:20
rhubarb I've still got the autum
8:22
raspberries I've still got the plum tree
8:24
and I've still got the cooking apple
8:26
tree and that's like 16 17 years later
8:31
and I've still got all them same crops
8:34
on my plot uh obviously the strawberry
8:37
plants have died off but the runners
8:38
they've all been from them same plants
8:40
from 16 years ago uh it's amazing how
8:44
I've managed to keep them going all
8:46
these years
8:48
and I'm really impressed with how it's
8:51
come on and that is how I got into
8:54
gardening I didn't read no books on it I
8:57
didn't have the internet back then
9:00
um I just learned everything through
9:02
trial and error and learning from my
9:05
mistakes and it was absolutely brilliant
9:08
um yep I didn't manage to get it all
9:11
cleared in time sometimes it were a mess
9:14
sometimes I got warnings off the council
9:16
saying if you don't hurry up and tidy
9:17
your plot up we're going to evict you
9:19
and stuff like that which was
9:21
disheartening at the time and it did
9:24
make me feel like wanting to give up
9:26
sometimes and I battled on I set myself
9:30
targets I set myself missions and I got
9:33
it cleared and I got on top of it and
9:35
sometimes I feel like I'm the only ever
9:38
one that's down at the allotment site I
9:39
never see anybody else down there I see
9:42
my dad every s and my neighbor but
9:44
that's it I don't hardly ever see anyone
9:46
down there and it's bizarre how I never
9:49
actually see people down at the
9:51
allotment site uh but they seem to keep
9:53
on top of the plots so they must Venture
9:56
down when I'm not around uh whether they
9:59
don't to be on my blogs or not but yeah
10:02
that is how I got into gardening and it
10:05
all started about four or five years ago
10:10
uh I just started taking pictures for my
10:13
own benefit um of where I planted stuff
10:16
how I planted it where I planted it when
10:19
I planted it how well it did and stuff
10:22
like that just for like a record really
10:24
is a diary as a visual diary and I just
10:27
started posting them to a Facebook page
10:29
just just for myself
10:31
and I thought yeah uh I need to keep up
10:35
this dat and then suddenly I had a
10:38
follower and I thought what wh why is
10:41
somebody following my page it's just my
10:43
diary of what I'm getting up to on the
10:45
plot and then a few more people started
10:48
following I thought okay all right
10:51
people are starting to see what I'm
10:53
getting up to should I be worried that
10:55
they following my allotment page will
10:57
they come down will they do stuff to my
10:59
plot stuff like that um then it started
11:04
growing and and i' got 100 followers and
11:06
I thought blind me a 100 people
11:09
following me on Facebook and they want
11:11
to see what I'm doing down at the plot
11:14
and it just start it just snowballed
11:17
after that and I got more and more
11:20
followers uh got a thousand then it went
11:23
to 5,000
11:25
10,000 now it's at 18,000 followers on
11:28
Facebook book and it it absolutely
11:31
baffles me still to this day that people
11:35
want to listen to me and see what I get
11:37
up to down at the alotment like I said I
11:40
still class myself as an amateur
11:41
Gardener I don't agree that I know
11:44
things very much sometimes and um I'm
11:48
still learning all the time literally
11:51
every single day I'm learning new things
11:53
like I said with that honey berry plant
11:56
that's something new to me I've not seen
11:57
it before uh so I need to research up on
12:00
that and see what it's all about see
12:03
what compost it soil it grows in and
12:05
stuff like that and see where to plant
12:08
it so that is something else that I'm
12:10
going to learn about this year and
12:13
research so we're going to be getting
12:15
into all that again this year and so
12:18
then I started up an Instagram page and
12:20
that started getting followers again
12:23
it's just reached 10,000 followers which
12:25
I still can't believe so I'm posting
12:28
more and more photos on Instagram now
12:30
cuz everybody seems to enjoy them they
12:32
seem to like what I post and then about
12:37
a year ago I started this podcast
12:40
Channel
12:41
and I I I I sometimes struggle to find
12:44
videos to uh film on my allotment uh I I
12:49
don't always know what to film so I
12:52
thought I'll I'll try podcast uh
12:55
podcasts were starting to become the
12:57
craze to be honest I'd never listened to
12:59
a podcast in my life so I didn't even
13:01
know what happens on a podcast and I
13:03
still don't cuz I don't really listen to
13:05
podcasts now um but I thought yeah I'll
13:09
record an episode or two and people are
13:12
enjoying
13:13
it
13:15
and I just talk Straight From the Heart
13:19
uh on these podcasts I don't do no
13:21
editing whatsoever PE I'm in like
13:24
Facebook groups and people get special
13:27
editors in to edit all the podcast make
13:29
them so that they don't keep saying uh
13:31
and no blank spaces and stuff like that
13:35
um but yeah I I I just do it raw and
13:38
straight from the heart and all my
13:42
followers seem to enjoy it so I was
13:44
posting it like once a week to start off
13:47
with and then I thought I'm going to
13:50
start doing few more so it went to like
13:52
three episodes a week and now whenever I
13:56
can literally it's nearly every single
13:59
day most
14:00
times and sometimes I think about what
14:03
do I actually talk about on these
14:05
podcasts but then I was just chatting to
14:08
um one of my followers
14:12
um and he was
14:14
saying just talk about what you've been
14:16
up to on that day even if you've not
14:18
been to the alotment just talk do an
14:21
episode and talk about what you've been
14:23
up to what you're getting up to and
14:25
stuff like that people enjoy listening
14:28
to these podcasts and sometimes you just
14:32
want to have a listen and catch up with
14:34
gardening with Ben so I thought
14:37
yeah that's true and yes I'm sad I do
14:42
look at the stats to see how many people
14:44
have been listening to episodes and
14:47
every month I'm getting more and more
14:49
listens to my
14:51
podcasts and I can only see how many
14:54
people have subscribed on Spotify I
14:56
can't see what other platforms people
14:58
have subscribed on which is
15:00
unfortunately so I don't know how many
15:01
people follow me on Apple podcasts or I
15:04
don't know how many people have
15:06
subscribed on Amazon Echo and stuff like
15:08
that but I can see how many people have
15:10
subscribed on Spotify and I think it's
15:13
up to
15:15
360 so if that goes the same for the
15:18
other pod uh podcast platforms wow thank
15:22
you and thank you for listening to all
15:25
these episodes and I do love recording
15:29
them and I do love uploading them every
15:32
day like I said some days I struggle to
15:34
find stuff to talk about so please do
15:38
get in touch with me and send me a
15:41
message and send me suggestions on what
15:44
to talk about because I do want to post
15:47
these every day if possible because I
15:49
know people do love
15:52
enjoy listening to them and I'm enjoying
15:54
doing them and obviously the more that I
15:57
do them the more people listen and more
16:00
followers I will get so please do keep
16:03
sending them suggestions and keep me up
16:05
to
16:06
date and I hope that you do actually
16:10
enjoy these podcasts because I do get a
16:12
lot of messages from people that have
16:14
listened to them and it's always great
16:17
to get feedback on episodes uh there's
16:20
certain people out there that do send me
16:21
messages after every episode which I
16:23
really do appreciate you're not bugging
16:25
me whatsoever uh it's just good to
16:28
listen and talk to people
16:31
and my allotment has helped me so so
16:35
much over these past couple of years I
16:38
have struggled
16:40
absolutely truthfully with mental health
16:44
so much that I don't talk to my family
16:48
all the time uh I don't talk to my
16:50
friends all the time I've not got many
16:52
friends uh I'll hold my hand up I've got
16:55
not got many friends out there uh that I
16:57
talk to uh so talking to other gardeners
17:01
really does help me because I don't have
17:04
many people to talk about my enjoyment
17:06
on the uh allotments about and it's good
17:09
to talk to other people so please do
17:13
reach out if you've not got anybody to
17:15
talk to or if you do want a chat just
17:17
reach out and let's have a chat uh I do
17:20
love talking to all my followers and
17:23
yeah I'll never meet half of you uh if
17:26
you do live in Sheffield do send me a
17:28
message and maybe you can get me a pain
17:31
and I'll give you an autograph but yeah
17:34
um do get in touch it is good to listen
17:37
to uh other people and talk to people
17:42
and I I do appreciate the support that
17:44
you do give me and being on my allotment
17:47
sharing my stories with everybody does
17:50
bring me so much enjoyment and happiness
17:53
to My Life um I really don't know what
17:56
I'd do without it if I could do this
17:58
full time I would do it full time at
18:02
heartbeat but to do that we would have
18:05
