Let's plant 100 gladiolas corns.
0:05
Welcome to Gardening with Ben, and today
0:07
we're going to be planting 100 of these.
0:10
Now, I've got gladiolas in my a lotment,
0:12
and they're absolutely gorgeous. They
0:14
come back every single year, and this is
0:16
a mixed variety of colors. So, plenty of
0:19
different colors in this pack. So, we're
0:21
going to plant these, but we're not
0:23
going to plant them in the ground this
0:24
time cuz we've been having a lot of
0:25
issues with squirrels down at the plot,
0:26
and they pinched a lot of my tulips. So,
0:28
we don't want them pinching these
0:30
because I want them to grow. So, we're
0:32
going to grow these in pots and then I'm
0:34
going to put netting over the pots until
0:37
they are big enough and take the netting
0:39
off once they can handle themselves and
0:42
hopefully grow and the squirrels won't
0:44
get them. These are perfect for either
0:46
cut flowers or for beautiful displays in
0:49
the garden. We're not going to grow them
0:51
as cut flowers. We're going to grow them
0:52
for the beautiful displays in the a
0:54
lotment because I love the flowers down
0:56
here. So, I love uh attracting
0:59
pollinators. These are ideal for bees
1:01
and insects. So, that will help with
1:04
pollination down at the plot as well.
1:06
So, yeah. So, let's get these planted
1:09
and let's get these growing.
1:11
So, these are the plant pots that I'm
1:13
going to grow them in. And as you can
1:15
see, there's no holes in them at the
1:16
moment. So, we need to pop some holes in
1:18
them to help with drainage as we don't
1:21
want them to get water logged and rot
1:22
the corns. So yeah, we need to drill all
1:25
these and get these filled up with
1:29
So we've put some compost in the bottom.
1:31
We've not filled them too far up because
1:34
I want them to take root and I want them
1:36
to build a good support system so that
1:38
hopefully they stand up pretty well in
1:40
the plant pots so that they can grip on
1:43
perfectly. So yeah, we're going to put
1:45
10 in like this and that should be
1:49
ideal. And these buckets or
1:53
pots, should I say, will look absolutely
1:56
blooming fantastic once they're all out.
1:58
And the best thing is with gladiolize is
2:00
that usually you have to dig them up in
2:04
the winter because frost can kill them
2:06
and damage them. So I can just bring
2:08
these back in the poly tunnel over the
2:10
winter and then take them back out when
2:12
it's nice and weather outside. So yeah,
2:15
let's get these all putotted up and
2:18
let's get all the gladiolas corns in
2:22
So we've done all them and remember when
2:25
planting that the pointy side goes up
2:28
because that's where the shoe will come.
2:30
So yeah, we're going to get these
2:31
covered with compost now and give them a
2:34
good watering to get them working and
2:36
get them starting to germinate.
2:40
So we've covered them all with compost.
2:41
So, we not filled them right up to the
2:42
top cuz I didn't want to use loads of
2:44
compost. But, yeah, we've got them all
2:46
done. So, next job is to make them
2:48
squirrel proof and to protect them from
2:50
the dreaded squirrels.
2:54
So, for them, all I'm going to do is I'm
2:56
going to use some of this netting, which
2:58
I got from Oakland Gardens, and tie them
3:01
around the tops. And then when they
3:03
start growing and getting some good
3:04
growth on them, then I'll take the
3:06
netting off and let them shoot through.
3:08
That should hopefully protect the
3:10
squirrels from getting the gladiolas
3:15
So that's it. We're just covering and
3:17
we're netting it and that's perfect.
3:19
Perfect to keep the squirrels out and
3:21
hopefully get some nice gladiolas
3:24
coming. So we need to get these outside
3:27
and get them watered.
3:30
So make sure you drop us a follow to
3:31
stay up to date with all our videos and
3:33
see these blooms in summer. I can't wait
3:36
to see what they look like. Until next
3:38
time everyone, remember keep smiling,
3:40
keep shining and keep gardening with Ben
