February sewing mistake UK gardeners
0:04
make. Welcome to Gardening with Ben. And
0:06
yes, we are now in February. So, this is
0:10
one February mistake gardeners set
0:13
themselves for failing on their a
0:16
lotments and in the gardens.
0:19
Now, obviously, February can be pretty
0:22
cold still. We can get snow, we can get
0:24
frost, we can get bad weather. It's not
0:27
always best for starting seedlings off
0:30
in. Now, people think, "Oh, I can start
0:32
them all off on my window sill, get them
0:34
all started." However, they can grow
0:36
pretty leggy and not grow very well and
0:39
strong enough. So, I tend to wait for
0:41
all my seedlings to start them off in
0:44
middle of March, end of March, and
0:46
usually they all catch up. The only ones
0:48
that I've started now are my chilies,
0:50
peppers, or jeans. They're the only ones
0:54
that I've started really early. So yeah,
0:57
I usually wait for all my other
0:59
seedlings then and especially my
1:01
tomatoes as well. I usually start them
1:04
off in March. They soon catch up and
1:06
they soon get growing well cuz obviously
1:08
I'm in the north of England. So yeah,
1:11
that is when it's a bit warmer for us up
1:14
north. So I'll be starting all my seeds
1:16
then. So, make sure you stay tuned for
1:18
when we're starting all our seedlings
1:20
off, and we'll be showing you along the
1:22
way how well they're all getting on.
1:24
Now, obviously, starting the seedlings
1:26
off early can be an issue with light and
1:30
space. You don't have as much light or
1:32
space on your windows, so they're not
1:34
always going to grow very well. And
1:37
that's why you need your greenhouse or
1:38
your shed when it gets a bit warmer. And
1:40
sometimes we get a little heat wave in
1:42
February uh or March. And that is the
1:45
ideal time to start them off when it
1:47
gets a bit warmer and the ideal
1:50
temperature really cuz I've got plenty
1:53
of space in my shed. I've got absolutely
1:55
loads of shelving and yeah, we'll be
1:57
starting them all off then. And we're
1:59
preparing this month, getting all the
2:01
seeds ready, seeing what seeds we've got
2:03
and which ones we're going to grow this
2:05
year. We're planning it all. We're
2:06
preparing it all, thinking what we're
2:08
going to grow in each bed. And yeah,
2:10
that is a it's a great time for
2:12
planning. So use February to plan
2:15
everything that you're going to be
2:16
growing in March and use it wisely
2:19
rather than starting early, failing all
2:22
your seeds and having to buy all new
2:23
seeds again and start from scratch. And
2:26
obviously February is a slow month for
2:29
germination. They don't always germinate
2:31
fast. So you could end up overwatering
2:33
them as well, which can rot them and
2:36
cause damage to the roots and they won't
2:38
grow well at all. So March is the best
2:41
time to start them all off. And strong
2:44
plants often come from restraint from
2:47
yourself. So restrain yourself. Don't
2:50
sew the seeds this month. Wait until
2:52
March when I'm starting all mine off.
2:55
And you'll probably get better crops
2:57
from them all and hopefully have some
2:59
great produce this year down at the a
3:01
lotment. That's what we're planning
3:02
anyway to get some great crops down at
3:04
the aotment. So, make sure you drop us a
3:06
follow and stay up to date when we're
3:08
going to be sewing all our seeds down at
3:09
the plot as we'll be sharing it all.
3:11
Lots of videos of us sewing us seeds.
3:13
So, stay around for all that. So until
3:16
next time everyone remember keep
3:18
smiling, keep shining and keep gardening
