0:24
episode hello and welcome back to
0:27
gardening with Ben well it's Monday and
0:31
what an awful weekend it has been well
0:35
the past few days have been uh to be
0:37
honest uh it's certainly not been a nice
0:40
weekend whatsoever uh with these two
0:44
main storms and the third one which has
0:47
come on Sunday as well so yeah we but we
0:52
still can't complain because the winter
0:54
that we've had has not been bad
0:57
whatsoever uh yes these storms have been
1:00
horrendous but we've not had the snow
1:03
we've not had multiple storms uh we've
1:06
been getting a few recently but we've
1:08
not had as bad a winter as we usually
1:11
get so I'm still not complaining about
1:14
this weather to be honest because we've
1:16
been pretty good and lucky to be honest
1:19
up to now and I'm not looking forward to
1:23
going to my plot because obviously I
1:25
don't know what state my shed's in after
1:28
the storm Unice uh hope hopefully it's
1:30
still standing but we'll have to wait
1:32
and see on that stance uh but yeah we'll
1:35
we'll have to have a good week down
1:38
there I won't be back down until my plot
1:40
on Wednesday when I'm back off work and
1:44
that will be for 4 days hopefully and
1:46
hopefully the weather will pick up by
1:49
then he hopes luckily it always seems to
1:52
be raining while I'm working at the
1:54
moment so we've not had many bad days
1:57
down there and that's why we've managed
1:59
to be able to back on with my plot and
2:02
get it all ship shape and ready there's
2:04
still an awful lot to get done I've
2:07
still got about eight beds to clear and
2:11
then once I've cleared all my beds it's
2:13
a case of sorting out all my paths my
2:15
paths are my low priority because
2:18
obviously I'm not growing in them
2:20
they're just for walking on uh but once
2:22
I've cleared all my beds I usually rip
2:25
up all my paths uh where I've got all
2:28
black membrane down cing slabs down and
2:31
I dig it all over again and relay all
2:34
the paths from scratch the reason why I
2:36
do this is because yes I've got black
2:38
membrane down and I've got paths down
2:41
but the roots still grow underneath it
2:44
and they can sneak into the beds so it's
2:47
good to get them dug over I do that once
2:49
a year at least sometimes two depending
2:52
how bad the weather is or uh how bad the
2:56
roots are growing or if I've got time
2:59
really if I'm up today with my plot I'll
3:01
give them a second go over later on in
3:03
the year but I try to get them done at
3:05
least once a year and get them all
3:07
readle over and sorted for the year
3:10
ahead really and it's case of just doing
3:13
it and making it look better really and
3:16
cleaning up all my Paving slabs sweeping
3:19
them up getting them a bit more level
3:21
because obviously when you're standing
3:22
on them all the time they start to grow
3:24
on level and they get mcky and weeds
3:27
grow in between them as well so yeah
3:30
it's Cas getting them all ready and tidy
3:32
and cleaned
3:33
up so what are we going to be looking at
3:36
doing this week down on the plot well
3:38
hopefully if the weather does keep hold
3:42
I will be going down and getting the
3:44
rest of those beds dug over and getting
3:46
them cleared and hopefully work a few
3:49
hours in my shed because I want to spend
3:52
a bit more time regularly getting my
3:55
shed ready because getting into March
3:58
that is when I'm going to start sewing
3:59
all my seeds uh towards the end of March
4:02
beginning of April so I need to get it
4:04
all ready and in good shape because if
4:09
it has all collapsed and everything like
4:11
that who knows we will find out um we
4:15
need to get looking at sewing all my
4:17
tomatoes all the ones that do need a
4:20
long germination rate uh to get going
4:24
obviously a lot of people start the
4:25
tomatoes off in January and February but
4:28
I tend to wait till March because it is
4:30
warmer up here in Sheffield uh towards
4:35
then and they do soon catch up with the
4:40
main plants obviously you won't get the
4:41
fruit for as long uh but I'll still get
4:44
a good crop from them so I'm not
4:45
complaining so we need to look at
4:48
getting all them ready for sewing and
4:51
also I'm going to be sewing my melons
4:52
pretty soon uh getting all them ready
4:56
and I'm looking at growing a lot of
4:58
different varieties of melons this time
4:59
I hope you can still hear that it's
5:01
absolutely bouncing it down while I'm
5:03
recording this uh but that just goes to
5:06
show it's absolutely chucking it down
5:08
here this weekend um but yeah I've got
5:13
lots and lots to get done and my main
5:15
jobs this week what I'm thinking of
5:17
doing is having a look at all my flower
5:21
seeds as now is the time to be looking
5:24
at what flower seeds you want to be
5:25
starting to S because I'm going to be
5:27
starting them off in March because a lot
5:30
of flower seeds do need a long time to
5:33
get growing and to get germinated really
5:36
because they take a while to develop
5:38
their flowers so the quicker you can get
5:40
them going the better results you'll get
5:43
from your flower seeds and I've good
5:46
I've purchased so many flower seeds this
5:48
year it's unbelievable if you saw my
5:50
picture what I shared on Instagram of
5:52
how many flower seeds I've purchased
5:53
this year wow it's certainly amazing and
5:57
if I can get a lot of them to grow
6:00
I will be impressed with myself and lot
6:02
a lot of them are actual perennials
6:05
which means that they'll keep flowering
6:07
year after year as annuals are ones
6:11
that'll just grow for one year and then
6:12
they'll die uh so then you have to
6:15
replace them so the more plants I can
6:17
get going what are annual uh perennial
6:20
plants which I don't have to keep
6:22
replacing the better really because
6:24
it'll save me time in the long run and
6:26
hopefully we'll get some great results
6:29
from them
6:30
so it's all time and effort getting it
6:34
all started and getting those flower
6:36
seeds growing but once I've got them
6:38
growing and developed in the right area
6:42
cuz I've got my flower beds which are
6:44
specific for flowers uh and not for
6:46
growing vegetables then they can just
6:48
stay there and be happy and keep growing
6:51
back and blooming every year and I'm
6:53
going to be talking quite a bit this
6:55
week uh about different topics uh one of
6:58
them being about
7:00
growing cut flowers that's uh one of my
7:03
podcasts and also I'm going to be
7:05
talking a lot about growing melons this
7:08
year because I want a lot of people to
7:10
try and grow some melons and see how
7:13
they get on uh a bit of an experiment
7:15
I've grown them myself once before and
7:18
had great success been doing quite a lot
7:20
of research into what varieties to grow
7:24
in the UK because some varieties you
7:26
won't get good results from um water
7:29
melons you'll struggle to get good
7:31
results from them and yeah I've been
7:33
researching the best varieties to try
7:35
and grow in the UK so make sure you stay
7:38
tuned for that episode and you can try
7:41
and grow them along with me uh sew your
7:44
seeds around the same time when I let
7:46
you know when I'm sewing my melon seeds
7:48
and yeah if you've got a greenhouse or
7:50
poly tunnel let's give it a try and see
7:53
if we can get some melons growing it
7:55
won't cost you much to get them going uh
7:58
even if it they fail it's good little
8:00
experiment it's good to try new things
8:02
as I keep saying I like to try different
8:05
stuff every year last year I tried a lot
8:07
of different varieties of squashes and
8:10
uh from trying that I'll be uh growing
8:13
some of those varieties again this year
8:15
because I had great results last year
8:18
last year I grew loads of different
8:19
varieties of sunflowers and wow did I
8:23
get some beautiful sunflowers on my plot
8:25
last year and I'm going to do the same
8:27
again um growing new stuff leads you to
8:31
Growing it in future if you get good
8:33
results why not keep trying to grow them
8:36
and get the best from your allotment as
8:38
possible so yeah it's going to be quite
8:41
a busy week for me down at the allotment
8:44
and at home getting things prepared and
