This video shares the key steps to growing massive pumpkins and achieving impressive harvests. I explain how to start strong plants from seed, prepare rich soil, and give pumpkins the space and nutrients they need to grow large.
I also share tips on watering, feeding, pollination, and managing vines so plants focus their energy on producing bigger fruit. A practical guide for gardeners who want to grow larger pumpkins and improve their harvest results.

Let's grow some Big Max pumpkins.
0:03
Welcome to Gardening with Ben and today
0:05
we're going to be growing some Big Max
0:07
pumpkins. These are the Wilco variety.
0:09
Now, Wilco seeds are available in the
0:11
range. I know I will get a lot of
0:13
comments on my videos saying there's no
0:15
more Wilco seeds. How old are those
0:17
seeds? Yes, there are. They're in the
0:18
range. So, we're going to be sewing
0:21
these. We're now in March. And it says
0:23
on the packet to sew in March.
0:26
I've got an unheated greenhouse as I've
0:28
not got a heated one. So, we're going to
0:31
be sewing these in here. We're going to
0:34
be using our little trick of putting
0:35
cling film over the plant pots to give
0:37
them that extra bit of warmth, keep them
0:39
moist, and hopefully get them germinated
0:41
fast. We're going to be sewing these in
0:43
plant pots for the time being. And when
0:45
they get bigger, once they've
0:46
germinated, then we'll separate them all
0:48
out into individual pots themselves. So,
0:52
yeah, we have got 10 seeds in each one
0:54
of these. 20 plants altogether. Probably
0:57
all of them won't grow, but fingers
0:59
crossed they do. If they do, we'll have
1:01
a lot of pumpkins this year. But yeah,
1:03
I've never actually grown a massive
1:04
pumpkin in the past. They've just been
1:06
like average size. But pumpkins require
1:09
a lot of feeding, a lot of watering if
1:11
you do want to get big ones, and I can't
1:13
get down to the plot every day. So, I
1:15
can't water them every single day. So,
1:17
hence probably the reason why they're
1:18
not always massive. But, I'm happy with
1:21
a decent size one. So, let's get these
1:24
sewn and let's get these growing. So,
1:26
the plant pots that we're going to use,
1:27
we're going to use these ones. We'll put
1:29
about five seeds in each one. And yeah,
1:32
once they get big enough, then we'll
1:34
separate them out into individual pots.
1:36
But we're going to just start them off
1:37
in one plant pot to start off with. So,
1:40
let's fill up these plant pots
1:44
with good compost. We don't need them
1:46
full up to the top. So, they're near
1:48
enough to the top. So, let's get the
1:50
seeds and put them in there.
1:53
Now, pumpkin seeds are absolutely
1:55
massive, so they're easy to handle. As
1:57
you can see, they're pretty big. So,
1:59
we're going to pop these into the plant
2:01
pot. Five in each,
2:06
depending how many we've got, whether
2:07
they've given us any extra ones.
2:10
No, no extra ones in there. Do you
2:12
reckon somebody actually counts them out
2:14
to put in the plant pot? I'd love to do.
2:20
So, that's all them done. So, we need to
2:22
fill them up with compost now and give
2:24
them a good water. So, that is basically
2:26
what they look like. So, like I said,
2:28
once they start growing, then we'll
2:29
separate them out into separate pots.
2:32
So, they've had a good water. So, we're
2:34
not going to use a clean film. Actually,
2:36
we're going to use our Ziploc bag
2:38
method. I don't know if you've seen in
2:39
the other videos, we use Ziploc bags to
2:41
keep them moist and keep them warm. So,
2:45
there we have it. All in our Ziploc
2:47
bags. These are perfect for keeping them
2:49
moist, keeping them warm, and yeah, once
2:51
they're germinated, and obviously you
2:53
can leave them on for a bit longer while
2:54
they're growing rather than the cling
2:56
for you have to take it off because they
2:58
need to get through. But yeah, they're
3:00
perfect for keeping things growing down
3:02
here at the aotment.
3:04
So, I've popped them in a nice light
3:06
airy spot in his greenhouse and
3:08
hopefully they'll get germinated pretty
3:10
fast with it hopefully warming up a bit
3:13
down here. So, let's come back later and
3:16
see how well they get on. Sure you drop
3:18
us a follow to stay up to date with how
3:20
big our pumpkins grow this year down at
3:21
the a lotment as we'll give weekly tours
3:24
and regular updates on all our plot. So,
3:26
until next time everyone, remember, keep
3:28
smiling, keep shining, and keep
3:30
gardening. We're bad every
