Let's harvest some cooking apples.
0:04
Welcome to Gardening with Ben. We're
0:06
going to be harvesting some cooking
0:07
apples today as they are getting massive
0:10
and I keep hearing them drop off. So,
0:12
we're going to get some cooking apples
0:14
off ready for making crumbles with.
0:17
Obviously, they grow well with the
0:18
blackberries out at this time of year.
0:20
So, it's great to pick them. And
0:23
obviously, there's quite a few in
0:24
clumps. So, if we pick them, then the
0:26
others can grow out and get bigger
0:28
themselves. So, let's have a look at our
0:30
cooking apple tree and see what's ready
0:33
This year, my cooking apple tree has
0:35
done absolutely fantastic. It's amazing.
0:39
Obviously, there's quite a few small
0:41
ones still in there, but we're going to
0:42
get some of the bigger ones off so that
0:44
the smaller ones can grow out and get
0:47
bigger. And as you can see, some have
0:49
been dropping on the floor. So, any of
0:51
that are decent, we'll take home as we
0:54
don't want to waste them. Cooking apples
0:56
are expensive in supermarkets, so it's
0:58
an ideal plant to grow. This is a
0:59
Bramley cooking apple tree. It's been in
1:02
20 years now and is welldeveloped and
1:05
this is probably the best crop that I've
1:07
ever had off it as I didn't prune it
1:09
last year, which can stress the tree
1:11
out, but it does need a prune this year.
1:13
So, we might not get as many next year
1:15
down on the plot. So, yeah, let's get
1:17
some harvested and see what results we
1:21
As you can see, there's still loads on
1:23
there, but those ones aren't as big, so
1:26
we're going to let them grow a bit
1:27
bigger before we harvest them. But let's
1:30
have a look at our results and see what
1:32
we've got harvested. Now, we've got a
1:34
bucket full there. Imagine buying them
1:36
from the supermarket, how much they
1:38
would cost. Absolutely extortionate.
1:41
Someone told me the other day that
1:43
supermarkets and shops haven't got many
1:45
in at the moment, so they are pretty
1:48
rare. So, I could make a fortune selling
1:50
these, but we can't sell them,
1:51
unfortunately. But, yeah, they are going
1:53
to be used for apple crumbles and for
1:56
pies. So, I look forward to tasting
2:01
So, yeah, we have got loads harvested
2:04
from down at the a lotment. Absolutely
2:06
amazing. I'm looking forward to when it
2:08
gets to winter so that I can prune the
2:09
tree back because I'm struggling to get
2:11
on my plot at the moment. It's taken
2:12
over so much. But, we're going to let it
2:14
finish fruiting before we do chop it all
2:17
back. and give it a good old prune ready
2:20
for next year. So, if you enjoyed this
