Let's show you what we're growing our
0:02
potatoes in this year. Welcome to
0:03
Gardening with Ben. And today we're
0:05
going to show you what we're growing our
0:07
potatoes in. As I don't grow mine in the
0:09
ground, I've grown them in the ground in
0:10
the past and they do have issues. You
0:13
get um wire worm in them. Sugs get them
0:16
and you end up stabbing them as well
0:18
when you're digging them up and that's a
0:20
real pain when that happens. I really do
0:22
hate it when you stab them. So, we grow
0:24
ours in containers. We've grown ours in
0:26
boxes for the last few years. drilled
0:28
some holes in the bottom, but they still
0:30
get water logged sometimes and yeah, um
0:34
they still have issues with water
0:36
logging. So, this year we have been
0:39
given some containers from Oakland
0:41
Gardens Limited and these are perfect
0:44
for growing potatoes in. Let me show you
0:46
what they look like. So, we've got 10 of
0:49
these 30 L pots and these are ideal for
0:53
growing potatoes in. Now, we'll probably
0:55
put about three potatoes in each one as
0:58
we don't want to bombard them with too
1:00
many potatoes. But yeah, you'll put them
1:02
near the bottom and then fill them up
1:03
with compost. What I tend to do is I
1:06
start them off in the poly tunnel uh for
1:09
around I'll start them off on Good
1:11
Friday. Then that's usually around
1:14
March, beginning of April time. And then
1:17
we will move them outside probably come
1:22
May time when it's a bit warmer.
1:25
Obviously, you can have potatoes outside
1:26
earlier. Uh but I like to give them a
1:29
head start in the poly tunnel where it's
1:30
a bit warmer and hopefully produce more
1:33
potatoes. And another great thing about
1:34
this is that they've got proper holes in
1:36
the bottom. They're not drilled holes,
1:38
so they do drain absolutely amazingly.
1:41
And they won't get water loaded, what
1:43
can cause damage when you're growing
1:45
them in boxes or buckets. But yeah,
1:47
proper drainage in them. And yeah, we
1:50
should hopefully get some great potatoes
1:52
in them. Now, we've got all our potatoes
1:54
chitting at the moment, which means that
1:57
you put them in a dry, cool, light spot
2:00
for them to start getting the shoots on,
2:02
and then we'll be planting them all on
2:04
Good Friday. So, make sure you come back
2:06
Good Friday to see us all planting them
2:09
So, potatoes are one of the things that
2:12
I do love to grow. Obviously, it'll cost
2:14
you a bit of money in compost filling
2:15
them all up, but it's worth it. The
2:17
taste of homegrown potatoes is
2:19
completely different to shop bought
2:20
ones. They just melt in your mouth and
2:22
absolutely taste delicious. Now, I
2:24
cooked all mine in the air fryer last
2:26
year and they were absolutely delicious.
2:27
So, I've got lots of potatoes to grow
2:29
this year down at the plot. So, it's
2:31
exciting times ahead. So, make sure you
2:34
do drop us a follow to stay up to date
2:36
for when we do plant all our potatoes
2:38
down at the block and we will show you
2:40
what's happening. So, until next time
2:42
everyone, remember, keep smiling, keep
2:44
shining, and keep gardening.
