What vegetables to plant in November.
0:03
Welcome to Gardening with Ben, everyone.
0:05
And it's now the 1st of November, and
0:08
it's still mild down here, so there's
0:10
still plenty that you can be planting at
0:13
this time of year. Uh especially in the
0:16
beds outside in the empty beds. And
0:18
yeah, we're going to run through
0:20
everything that you can plant this
0:21
month. So, make sure you save this video
0:23
for later and share it to anybody that's
0:26
a gardener as well. So, first up is
0:29
broad beans. Now, if you're growing
0:31
broad beans, you need to plant a variety
0:33
called Aquadoulus Claudia. Now, this is
0:36
a winter hardy variety. It'll survive
0:38
the cold weather. It'll survive the
0:40
frosts, the snow, and it's perfect for
0:42
harvesting before the blackfly appear
0:45
down at the plot. So, hopefully you'll
0:47
get a nice harvest of broad beans. So,
0:50
like I said, start with Aquadulus
0:52
Claudia. Maybe start them in pots first.
0:54
Get them to a decent height because
0:55
there's not much vegetation around at
0:57
the moment. So, the mice and the birds
0:59
do love to find them and pinch them.
1:02
Next up is garlic. Great for growing
1:04
throughout the winter. It needs the cold
1:06
weather to help it split to form the
1:07
bulb. So, get them in pretty fast before
1:10
the ground does get hard and you will
1:12
get some great crops come June, July
1:14
time, ready for harvesting. Net them
1:17
over so that the birds don't pinch the
1:18
tops off them or pull them up. And yeah,
1:21
keep them protected. And once they get
1:23
protected, once they get big enough, you
1:25
can take the netting off. Then the same
1:27
goes for the next one, autumn onion
1:29
sets. Make sure they're netted over.
1:31
Many garden centers will be selling
1:33
autumn onion sets at this time of year,
1:34
whether it be red, yellow, or white. And
1:37
yeah, net them over until they're decent
1:39
size on the shoe. And then you can take
1:41
the netting off to stop the birds from
1:43
pinching them. And they should grow
1:45
pretty well throughout the autumn
1:47
period. Next up is shallots. Again, same
1:49
with netting. net them over and same
1:52
thing, plant them in the ground and you
1:54
will be getting crops around June, July
1:56
time and hopefully getting some great
2:00
Next up is winter spinach. Again, it
2:03
needs to be a winter hardy variety. So,
2:05
when you're looking at your seeds, make
2:06
sure that it's a winter variety and you
2:09
can grow that in a poly tunnel or
2:12
outside, but the growth is slow
2:14
obviously during the winter period. But
2:16
yeah, you'll get some great crops from
2:18
it and hopefully some great harvests.
2:21
Next up is winter lettuce. Now, this
2:24
needs to be grown undercover in a poly
2:25
tunnel or in a cold frame to give it
2:28
that extra bit protection. Look for a
2:29
variety called density or arctic king.
2:32
And they are two winter varieties. So,
2:34
it's better to grow them in a poly
2:36
tunnel or a cold frame to get better
2:38
results from them. Next up is lamb's
2:41
lettuce. Another great variety, an
2:43
excellent hardy salad crop. and you will
2:46
get some great crops all the way through
2:48
winter into springtime.
2:51
Next up is peashoots. Grow some
2:53
peashoots in the poly tunnel or in the
2:55
greenhouse or in a cold frame and snip
2:57
them off and you could harvest the young
2:59
shoots and enjoy them.
3:03
Next up is overwintering peas. So a
3:05
variety like meteor or deuce, they can
3:08
provide great crops and obviously if
3:10
you've got a poly tunnel they'll do
3:12
better in there, but they are winter
3:13
hardy varieties. So have a look around,
3:16
see what you want to grow. Again,
3:17
possibly grow them in pots first, get
3:19
them to a decent size, and then plant
3:21
them out when they're a bit bigger to
3:23
stop the mice from pinching all the peas
3:25
in the ground. So, I hope you found that
3:27
useful on what vegetables to plant
3:29
during November. Make sure that you give
3:31
us a follow and stay tuned for the video
3:34
on what flowers to plant in November as
3:37
well. Until next time everyone,
3:38
remember, keep smiling, keep shining,
3:40
and keep gardening with Ben, everyone.
