Let's plant some spinach. Welcome to
0:02
Gardening with Ben, everyone. And today
0:04
we're going to be planting some spinach
0:06
down at our a lotment. Obviously, it's
0:08
too early to be sewing it outdoors in
0:10
the ground, but we've got us new raised
0:12
beds in as poly tunnels. So, we're going
0:14
to sew some in here. And today, it's
0:16
about 10° in here. So, it's still pretty
0:18
cold, but it is going to warm up this
0:20
week, fingers crossed, and hopefully get
0:23
pretty decent down here. It's going to
0:24
be about 14° outside. to add a couple of
0:27
degrees on in here and it'll be about 16
0:30
to 17°. So, it's ideal time to get it
0:33
germinated in the poly tunnel. So, we're
0:36
going to sew this directly into our
0:38
raised beds, but this is going to be one
0:40
of my raised beds that I'll have tomato
0:41
plants in. So, I don't want to do it
0:43
right close to the back because that's
0:45
where my tomato plants are going to go
0:47
as this will still be probably growing
0:49
when my tomato plants are put in in May
0:52
time. And best thing about spinach is
0:56
that it's cut and come again. So you can
0:58
keep snipping off what you need and
1:00
yeah, it'll keep producing. Obviously, I
1:02
need to keep replacing the plants every
1:04
so often, but hopefully it will get a
1:06
decent crop of spinach. And it's great
1:08
to have like with your eggs, uh,
1:11
scrambled eggs and in your meals, in
1:14
your salads. So, it's a perfect choice
1:16
to have in the raised beds down here in
1:18
the poly tunnel. So, yeah, let's get
1:20
these in and let's get these sewn. So,
1:22
this is the raised bed that we're going
1:23
to do them in. And as you can see, we've
1:26
put three lines that we're going to grow
1:27
them in. And I'll grow my tomatoes
1:29
towards the back of the raised bed. So,
1:32
then we can still grow the spinach in
1:34
front of them. And yeah, hopefully get a
1:36
good crop of spinach. And as you know,
1:39
spinach makes you big and strong like
1:40
Papey. So, we need to get a seed, which
1:43
we've got, and we need to plant them
1:46
directly into the soil with enough
1:48
spacing in between them. There's 100
1:50
seeds in here, so we don't need them
1:51
all, but we'll sew enough to keep us
1:53
going and hopefully through the summer
1:55
time. So, let's get these spaced out.
2:00
So, we've put all those in the little
2:02
ridges. We've spaced them evenly apart.
2:04
And yeah, they'll probably uh be too
2:07
close together, but we can always pull
2:09
out the other plants and leave enough
2:12
spacing once they get growing and
2:14
hopefully germinate. So, next up is to
2:16
just cover them over, label them up, and
2:20
give them a good water to get them
2:24
So, we've given them a good water. We've
2:26
labeled them up. We've put a spinach in
2:28
so we know where they're going to pop
2:30
up. We've also put some food in there,
2:32
which is the Westland boost. So, that'll
2:35
help feed them for the next 6 months.
2:37
We'll probably sprinkle some more on in
2:38
a few months. But yeah, that should feed
2:40
them for 6 months and hopefully develop
2:44
some good spinach plants down here.
2:46
That's what we want. See how long
2:48
they're going to take to germinate. I'm
2:49
guessing probably about 2 weeks before
2:52
they start popping through. But we'll
2:53
see. We'll see how well they get on
2:55
depending on how warm it is actually in
2:58
the poly tunnel and if they get some
3:00
good heat in here to get them growing
3:03
and get them germinated. So, we'll be
3:05
harvesting these pretty early because
3:06
spinach doesn't take long to get going.
3:08
Once it gets going, it'll get growing
3:10
pretty fast down here. So, we could be
3:12
snipping some off come April time. We'll
3:15
we'll see. That's the plan anyway. So,
3:18
I'm looking forward to that. So, thanks
3:21
for watching today's video on sewing our
3:23
spinach seeds. Make sure you drop us a
3:25
follow because we do regular updates in
3:27
the poly tunnel of how everything's
3:29
growing and getting on. So until next
3:31
time everyone remember keep smiling,
3:33
keep shining and keep gardening with bed
