This video explains which fruit plants to start in September and how to establish them successfully before cooler weather arrives.
It covers suitable fruit varieties, planting position, soil preparation, spacing and simple care tips that help plants settle before winter. You’ll also learn how autumn planting improves root development and future harvests.
Planting at the right time helps fruit plants grow stronger and become more productive.
These tips apply to gardens, raised beds, containers and small growing spaces.

What fruit can you plant in September?
0:03
Welcome to Gardening with Ben. I hope
0:05
you've watched the previous two videos
0:07
on what vegetables to sew and what
0:09
flowers to sew in the previous two
0:11
videos. So, if not, go and check them
0:13
out as well. So, what fruit can we plant
0:16
this month? September, October is a
0:19
great time for planting fruit when the
0:21
plants are dormant and they'll settle
0:23
into the ground before the winter comes
0:24
and then the wet weather will help them
0:26
grow and establish their roots in the
0:29
garden. So, if you're starting off an
0:30
aotment or wanting a fruit patch area,
0:33
this is the perfect video for you. So,
0:36
first up is strawberries. Now, if you've
0:38
got strawberry plants, they'll be
0:39
sending out all the runners. Make sure
0:41
you put them into the soil to get more
0:44
plants or if not ask someone on the
0:46
other a lotment sites and they may share
0:48
some with you. But yes, strawberry
0:50
plants a great plant at this time of
0:52
year. Next up is raspberries. Now these
0:55
can spread everywhere. The roots on them
0:58
travel all over the place and they'll
0:59
pop up where you don't want them. So be
1:01
careful where you plant your raspberries
1:03
because they can take over and the roots
1:05
travel for ages. Next up is
1:08
blackberries. Now, I've grown a formless
1:10
blackberry and it's one of the best
1:11
things that I've grown on my plot and
1:13
I've seen it available in most
1:15
supermarkets and garden centers now and
1:17
yeah, have a look around and get a
1:19
formless blackberry and they grow so
1:21
fantastic and you don't get prickled
1:23
from them which is an absolute bonus.
1:26
Next up are your currents like your
1:28
black currants, your red currants, your
1:29
white currants. Make sure you plant them
1:32
somewhere where there's plenty of space
1:34
because they will bush out once they get
1:36
growing and established. And yeah,
1:38
obviously make sure you can try and net
1:40
them somehow to stop the birds from
1:41
eating them all. The only issue is that
1:43
you've got to pull out all the stalks
1:45
when you're picking them. But if you
1:46
don't mind that, have a go at growing
1:48
some currents and try making some jam.
1:51
Next up is gooseberries. Now
1:52
gooseberries are very thorny. So be
1:55
careful where you plant them because you
1:57
will get prickled from them and
1:59
especially when you're harvesting them.
2:01
I grow the red variety. They don't often
2:04
see the red ones. The red ones are
2:06
sweet. The green ones are sour. So if
2:08
you don't mind the sour taste, grow
2:10
green ones. But if you want a nice sweet
2:12
tasty one, grow the red ones. I highly
2:14
recommend growing the red variety of
2:16
goose gray. Fruit trees. Most places
2:19
will be having the fruit trees out in
2:20
the shops. Now you'll start seeing them
2:23
all in the entrances of the shops. And
2:25
yeah, I've grown mine from the
2:27
supermarket ones. And I've had mine in
2:29
years now. Talking about 20 years. Fruit
2:31
trees were the first things I bought for
2:33
the a lotment. I bought a Victoria plum.
2:35
I brought a cooking apple tree and I
2:38
brought some eating apples and they've
2:40
done absolutely fantastic. Great
2:42
varieties and great harvests off them as
2:45
well. So, if you're wanting to plant
2:47
your fruit trees, now is the perfect
2:49
time to start planting them. Again,
2:51
think about where you're going to be
2:52
planting them because that's where
2:53
they're going to grow and be forever
2:56
unless they die. But yeah, have a go at
2:58
growing fruit trees and make sure
3:00
they're well spaced apart and think
3:02
about the permanent location of where
3:04
you're going to be planting them. Is
3:07
blueberries. Now, blueberries need to
3:09
grow in eicacious compost, which means
3:11
it's an acid compost. That's the variety
3:14
of compost that you need to grow them
3:15
in. So, I grow mine in pots sunk into
3:17
the ground or obviously if you're
3:19
growing them straight into the ground,
3:21
make sure you add the right compost into
3:24
the ground and the eicacious feed to
3:26
help feed the blueberries. And again,
3:30
obviously, when they start fruiting, net
3:32
them over because the birds will eat
3:34
them and you need to protect them as
3:36
well from the birds. One more, it wasn't
3:39
the last one, is rhubarb crowns. Now,
3:42
I've got 16 rhubarb crowns on my a
3:44
lotment. They've been on here 20 years
3:46
now and they are well worth the money.
3:49
Rhubarb is so expensive to buy in the
3:51
supermarket now and it's so easy to grow
3:53
and yeah, space them apart. Make sure
3:56
you put some mulch around them to keep
3:58
the weeds down and keep them moist and
4:01
you can get great harvest from them.
4:03
Don't harvest in the first year. I know
4:05
it's tempting when you see the rhubarb
4:06
growing, but you need to let the crown
4:08
settle into the ground and harvest in
4:11
the second year. and then you can
4:12
harvest every year after that. Just make
4:15
sure you don't harvest it in its first
4:16
year. So that is what fruit you can
4:19
plant this month in September. Make sure
4:22
you share it to all your a lotment
4:23
friends and to your groups. Make sure
4:25
you share it to everybody. And if you're
4:28
not following us, drop us a follow.
4:30
Until next time everyone, remember keep
4:32
smiling, keep shining and keep gardening
4:34
with Ben everyone.
