This video explains how to prepare strawberry plants before winter to keep them healthy and productive.
It covers trimming leaves, removing runners, cleaning plants and protecting crowns from cold weather. Proper winter care helps plants survive colder conditions and improves next season’s harvest.

Up everyone and welcome to Gardening
0:02
with Ben. And today's job down at the a
0:05
lotment is to start tidying up and
0:07
clearing up around our strawberry bed
0:10
area and our Logan berries and our
0:13
thornless blackberries and getting it
0:15
all tidied and sorted out really and
0:19
looking good ready for next year. As
0:20
obviously we want decent strawberries
0:22
down at the aotment. That is the plan.
0:24
We always love decent strawberries. So
0:27
let's have a look at what we're doing
0:28
today.
0:30
So this is our strawberry patch area. As
0:32
you can see, it's an absolute mess at
0:34
the moment. Loads of leaves around from
0:36
the fruit trees. All the blackberries
0:38
have grown everywhere. So we need to tie
0:40
them all back and get them all sorted.
0:41
Get all the nettles out. Get the paths
0:43
back showing again around the sides. And
0:46
yeah, getting it all looking back in
0:48
shape as there's meant to be a load
0:50
of spring bulbs in this area as well.
0:52
So, we've got it all to tidy up and
0:55
neaten up and hopefully get all the
0:57
bulbs coming back through this well next
1:00
year now and getting it all looking good
1:02
again. But yeah, the grape vines growing
1:04
everywhere. So, we've got it all to tie
1:06
up and tidy up ready for next year's
1:09
growth down at the plot. So, we have
1:12
been busy. We've spent a few hours down
1:15
here, about 3 to four hours, and yeah,
1:18
there's not a lot what we've done, but
1:20
I'm happy with what we've got done, if
1:21
you get me. We've got a lot cleared, and
1:24
we started trimming all the strawberries
1:26
back and tidying them all, clearing all
1:28
the leaves, getting all the runners off,
1:30
what had taken root, and yeah, we're
1:33
going to pot all them up so that we can
1:34
fill in all the gaps next year down at
1:37
the a lotment because obviously some die
1:39
off, some don't survive the winter. And
1:41
yet it's a case of filling gaps in where
1:43
they've died off as you can never have
1:47
enough strawberries on your a lotment.
1:49
Like you only get them for a short
1:50
period of time, but the amount that you
1:52
get is unbelievable. So the more
1:54
strawberries that I have, the better
1:56
because I absolutely love them to this.
1:59
And they're so juicy, so tender, and you
2:02
can't get enough of them. So yeah, let's
2:04
have a look at what we've got completed
2:06
today.
2:08
So this is what it's looking like so
2:10
far. Obviously, we've taken off a lot of
2:12
the leaves. We've been clearing down the
2:14
side where everything was growing bad.
2:16
And we've been trimming off where the
2:18
old blackberries were and just tidying
2:20
it all up. There's still a hell of a lot
2:22
to do with sorting out all this uh
2:25
blackberry formless blackberry down the
2:27
side. Best thing about a formless
2:29
blackberry is that you don't get
2:30
absolutely spiked to death while you're
2:31
handling it. But yeah, it's one of the
2:34
best investments I've ever purchased. I
2:36
get so many huge Blackberries on it.
2:38
It's absolutely fantastic. Like I think
2:40
I only bought the plant for like5 to
2:44
seven pound and I bought a couple of
2:46
them and they've been absolutely wild.
2:48
They grow really far. Perfect for the
2:51
down the side of the a lotment and
2:53
absolutely amazing investment. So if
2:55
you're looking for blackberries, get a
2:57
formless blackberry because it's
2:58
absolutely amazing. Um we've still got
3:01
loads to do. We've got all the locomies
3:03
to sort out down that side. I've got an
3:05
idea of what I'm going to do down that
3:07
side, but I'll not tell you yet. I'll
3:09
keep you held on, but we'll not be doing
3:11
that until probably sometime next year.
3:13
But yeah, I've got a big plan for that
3:15
side of the plot. So, yeah, lots getting
3:18
happening. Lots happening down here and
3:20
things are coming on good. Hopefully, we
3:22
get a lot of strawberries next year down
3:24
at the plot. And I've also been clearing
3:27
down the side of the poly tunnel as well
3:30
where all the spring bulbs are. A lot of
3:32
them have come to the surface. So, we
3:33
need to get some more compost to cover
3:36
them over and get them back under
3:38
because they seem to like push theelves
3:40
back up to the top of soil. But, we've
3:42
got a lot of old compost. What I'm just
3:44
going to shove on top just to give it an
3:46
extra layer and make it a bit more
3:48
thicker for them more. But yeah, it's
3:50
all coming along pretty good down here.
3:52
I'm happy with how things are coming
3:54
along. Make sure you give us a follow so
3:56
that you can stay up to date with all
3:57
our projects down here at the a lotment
3:59
over this winter period. There's no
4:01
hibernating for me down here this year.
4:03
We're getting absolutely loads done so
4:05
that it looks the best ever done next
4:08
year down at the plot. So until next
4:10
time everyone remember keep smiling,
4:12
keep shining and keep gardening with Ben
4:13
everyone.
