What flower seeds to sew in January.
0:03
Welcome to Gardening with Ben,
0:04
everybody. We're now in January. Happy
0:06
New Year. It's time to get growing and
0:09
get started for the year ahead and get
0:11
this season started. And I'm so excited
0:14
for sewing flowers this year. So, get
0:16
your notepads, make a list of these, or
0:19
save this video and come back to it and
0:22
see what seeds you can sew in January.
0:25
So, let's get started with our list.
0:27
Sunflowers need heat to get them
0:30
germinated. They need warm weather to
0:32
get started and to get growing. The only
0:34
thing that you've got to be careful of
0:36
is flowers and growing leggy. So, be
0:39
careful. Make sure that they get enough
0:41
sunlight and you keep turning them
0:44
around. So, the ones that need heat to
0:47
get started to get growing are beonas.
0:52
A great flower in the garden. Add some
0:54
great color to the garden. geraniums,
0:57
which come back year after year. If you
0:59
dig them up and put them in the
1:00
greenhouse over the winter, keep them
1:03
warm, they'll flower the year after. So,
1:06
a great addition to the garden and a lot
1:08
cheaper to grow them yourselves rather
1:09
than buy them. And yeah, they are easy
1:14
Next up, opportunas. Great for hanging
1:16
baskets, adding bountiful color to the
1:18
hanging baskets. So are labilia. a great
1:22
flower to add into hanging baskets and
1:25
to spread across a garden.
1:28
My favorite next are sweet peas. Now, I
1:31
will be starting these this month,
1:33
getting them started and get an early
1:36
flowering on them so that they flower
1:38
all the way through the summer period.
1:40
The more you pick them, the more they
1:42
will flower throughout the summer
1:45
period. Next up, snapdragons. Another
1:48
great one and a great one for the bees.
1:50
absolutely love them and so easy to grow
1:53
as well. Next up is verbina. Another
1:57
great flower for the garden. And
1:59
finally, Colossus. Uh great addition to
2:03
a garden. And you can obviously grow
2:06
them indoors as well. So those are the
2:09
ones that need heat to get them
2:11
germinated to get growing and to get
2:13
started. So if you wanting a head start,
2:15
you can get growing them ones. Now, ones
2:19
that you can sew undercover in a
2:22
are hardy annuals. Some varieties can be
2:25
started now. So, make sure you check the
2:27
packets and see which ones you can get
2:32
Again, sweet peas, if you wanted them to
2:35
grow a bit later, grow them in the
2:36
greenhouse. But I'll be starting mine
2:38
off in the window to get them a head
2:40
start to get growing.
2:42
Next up is lark spur. Another beautiful
2:45
flower as well as this next one which is
2:48
nicotina and one of my favorite ones to
2:51
add to the garden which can be a bit
2:53
like a weed but I don't mind because if
2:55
it spreads it's absolutely gorgeous.
2:57
This is colundula a great flower and it
3:00
is edible apparently. I've never tried
3:03
it myself. Let me know in the comments
3:04
if you've tried it but I I'm one of
3:07
these that it's flour. I don't eat it.
3:12
Next up are bulbs and tubers. Now you
3:16
can start these off in pots in the
3:19
greenhouse to give them a head start.
3:21
These are beonia tubers, dia tubers and
3:25
lily bulbs. Now if you want to grow the
3:28
lily bulbs outside in the garden, make
3:30
sure it's not frozen or water logged.
3:32
But I would wait a couple of months
3:34
until it's probably a bit warmer to get
3:36
them started in the garden. So, those
3:38
are all the flowers that you can start
3:41
sewing this month down in the garden to
3:43
get some great rewards for the summer
3:45
period. Again, just be careful with
3:49
stuff growing leggy and stuff like that.
3:51
You might want to wait a bit just until
3:52
it warms up a bit, but I will be
3:55
starting my sweet peas this month down
3:57
in the a lotment. So, make sure you save
4:00
it, share it to anybody that's growing
4:02
flowers, or if you're new to flowers,
4:04
have a go and see how you get on and let
4:07
me know how well you do. So until next
4:10
time everyone remember keep smiling,
4:12
keep shining and keep gardening.
