transform your a lotment with these
0:02
tips. Welcome to Gardening with Ben. And
0:06
today's episode, we're going to talk
0:07
about transforming your a lotment with
0:10
these tips that I'm going to give you.
0:12
Now, I've had my plot for 16 years. No,
0:15
not 16. Possibly 22
0:19
22 years now. Wow. I got it when I was
0:22
18. So yes, 22 years I've had my a
0:25
lotment and I've learned a lot of
0:28
mistakes over the time, but these tips
0:32
what I'm going to give you today are
0:34
tips that I've learned from gardening
0:36
myself. And the most important tip of
0:40
all time is define clear paths. Now,
0:43
it's good to have a wide enough path for
0:46
you to get down. Don't try and have them
0:49
as slim as possible because you might
0:51
struggle getting up and down them. Have
0:53
a nice wide path. Now, the path size
0:56
that I have are a paving slab width
0:58
apart so that if I ever get any paving
1:01
slabs, I can just put them straight down
1:03
and use them on my paths. Now, the best
1:06
thing to put down on your paths is black
1:08
membrane because then it will keep all
1:10
the weeds down and the weeds won't grow.
1:14
And then if you want to put mulch on top
1:17
or paving slabs on top to make it look
1:19
nicer and attractive, that is something
1:21
that you can do in the future. But yes,
1:23
get black membrane down and fasten it
1:26
down well and that will keep the weeds
1:28
down on your paths over the time. It
1:30
saves you one job having to keep your
1:32
paths nice and clear. Next up is add
1:36
raised beds or mark out your beds. Uh,
1:39
that's one thing that I've always done
1:41
is that my beds have got pieces of wood
1:44
down the sides of each of the bed so
1:47
that it marks out where the beds
1:48
actually are and I can keep track of it
1:51
and I can know how many beds I've got
1:54
and one week I'll say I'll do that bed,
1:56
that bed, that bed and tick it off once
1:59
I've cleared it and tidied it up. So
2:01
yeah, it's good to have proper bit beds
2:04
made out. And often than not on
2:06
Facebook, you'll see people giving up
2:08
wood away for free. So if you see that,
2:11
get it. I'm a wood hoarder myself. If I
2:14
see wood available, I will get it. So
2:16
yes, make use of wood and build beds on
2:19
your a lotment to define where the beds
2:21
are actually are. One of the important
2:24
things, create a seating area. Now, I
2:27
didn't have a seating area for about 16
2:29
years. Uh because I thought I've not got
2:32
time to sit down, but I have now got a
2:35
seating area. I bought a nice chair next
2:37
to my shed so that I can sit back and
2:40
look at what I have actually done, enjoy
2:42
it and listen to the birds as well and
2:45
look at the wildlife because it's great
2:47
just sitting back and relaxing and
2:49
taking five minutes in and seeing all
2:52
the appreciative things around you of
2:54
what's growing and the wildlife enjoying
2:58
the a lotment as well.
3:00
Introduce archers onto your a lotment.
3:02
Now, that's something that I've done
3:03
this year. I've never had archers on my
3:05
plot, but we've got 10. We've gone from
3:08
none to having 10 on our plot. And I've
3:11
now got climbing plants climbing up
3:13
them. So hopefully we get some nice
3:15
clatus, some nice jasmine growing up
3:18
them, some climbing roses growing up
3:21
them, and hopefully attract lots of
3:22
color and pollinators to the a lotment,
3:25
and hopefully brighten it up as well
3:27
because there's a lot of greenery when
3:29
you're growing vegetables, so you want a
3:30
bit of color in there as well. Now, one
3:33
thing that I always go on about is add
3:36
wildlife areas. Wildlife is important to
3:38
the a lotments. Whether it be a pond for
3:40
the frogs so that they'll go around
3:42
eating all the slugs. Whether it's a
3:44
hedgehog house so that you can encourage
3:46
hedgehogs down to your a lotment. Again,
3:48
they'll eat the slugs as well. Uh bird
3:51
feeders attracting the birds to the a
3:53
lotment. The more birds you get to the
3:54
plot, they'll spot the slug, they'll eat
3:56
it. So, another beneficial, yes, it can
3:59
attract rats and mice, but it's a win or
4:02
lose situation, but I do love to see the
4:03
birds down at the aotment. So, that's
4:06
another thing. Organize your tools. Keep
4:08
them all together. Don't do what I do.
4:10
I'll just put them down somewhere and
4:11
then I lose them. And then when I'm
4:13
clearing at winter time, I find about 10
4:16
hand towels, five pairs of secretaries,
4:19
three pairs of scissors. Let me know if
4:21
you're the same. if you just find loads
4:23
of tools at the end. I've just been
4:24
clearing out the poly tunnel and I must
4:26
have found loads of pairs of scissors.
4:28
Next up as well is have water books for
4:31
rain water. Rain water is important.
4:34
It's a lot better for the plants than
4:37
natural water from the taps. Rain water
4:39
is so much beneficial. So the more rain
4:42
water you can collect, whether you have
4:43
water buts off your green houses or off
4:45
your poly tunnels or off your sheds,
4:47
collect as much rain water as possible
4:49
and use that where you can while you've
4:52
got rain water stored. So those are the
4:55
beneficial tips of to transform your a
4:58
lotment and to get started if you're a
5:00
newbie as well. So I hope you found
5:02
those useful. Remember to give us a
5:03
follow to stay up to date with all our
5:05
tips and advice. Until next time
5:07
everyone, remember, keep smiling, keep
5:09

5:11
