January gardening success in the UK
0:03
starts with planning, not with seed
0:05
trays. Welcome to Gardening with Ben.
0:07
And in today's episode, we're going to
0:09
be talking about planning for the year
0:11
ahead and being prepared and ready and
0:14
getting excited for the sewing season
0:18
down here at the aotment and the garden.
0:20
Now, a lot of gardeners get excited
0:22
after Christmas and when January starts
0:24
and they think, "Oh, I'm going to start
0:25
sewing all my seeds." Well, hold on.
0:27
Don't do it. wait until March when it's
0:30
a lot warmer and there's a lot more
0:31
light around to get sewing all those
0:34
seeds because it'll benefit it. You may
0:36
struggle to get stuff to germinate. It
0:38
might grow leggy because it's not
0:40
getting enough sunlight and yeah, things
0:42
will struggle. It's not always best to
0:44
start things off in your house and on
0:46
the window sills. It's sometimes best to
0:48
get the natural light in the greenhouse.
0:50
Just wait a couple of months till March
0:52
and it's perfect time for growing all
0:56
the seeds. And sometimes we get a little
0:57
heat wave in March, which is an ideal
1:00
time for germination. So that's when I
1:02
usually start off all my seeds in March.
1:04
The only ones we've started are the
1:05
chilies, the or jeans, and the peppers,
1:07
which need a longer growing period. So
1:09
they're ideal ones for starting in
1:13
Now, it's great to get all your seeds
1:16
together and work out when you're going
1:19
to be growing them and sewing them and
1:22
make a list of all the plants that
1:24
you're going to grow this year. I've got
1:26
myself a a lotment log book where I
1:28
write down all the notes of when I plant
1:30
it, when I sew it, when I harvest it,
1:32
and where I planted it so that I can
1:34
remember when it's started. And you can
1:36
look back on it the year after and see
1:39
how well it did. And if you're going to
1:41
follow the same things this year down at
1:43
the plot. So yeah, it's great thing to
1:46
try and do. If you've not got a log
1:48
book, have a look around. There's plenty
1:50
online and make notes of what you do.
1:54
And sometimes it's great to look at what
1:58
needs replacing. If you've got any seed
2:00
trays that are broken or damaged, have a
2:02
look at replacing them and getting them
2:04
all ready, cleaned, washed so that
2:07
there's no diseases around and ready for
2:09
the sewing season in March because it'll
2:11
soon be here. We're only a month away
2:13
now and we'll be getting ready for
2:15
sewing all our seeds. So, it's an
2:17
exciting time ahead and it's good to
2:20
plan out your layout of the plot. Like
2:22
my plot layout doesn't change. It's the
2:25
same layout that I've had for years now.
2:27
All we do over winter is dig them all
2:29
over, clear all the weeds, and get them
2:31
all ready for this year.
2:34
And get a piece of paper, draw your
2:37
plot, and write down where you're going
2:39
to grow stuff, and try and not put too
2:43
much in a bed. Because I've done that in
2:45
the past. I've put loads in, and I've
2:46
struggled to get in between to get them
2:48
weeded, get them tided. So sometimes
2:51
less is best when growing stuff and make
2:54
sure you've got enough room to get round
2:56
to keep them weed free because the weeds
2:59
take all the nutrients and the water so
3:01
the plants don't grow as well. So yeah,
3:04
make sure you got plenty of growing
3:08
So it's about preparing and planning and
3:11
without preparation and planning you
3:14
won't get success. So spend a rainy day
3:17
when it's not very nice and get ready
3:20
for this year's growing season because
3:22
it's going to be here soon. Exa it's
3:25
exciting times. I'm looking forward to
3:27
this year. We've got a lot of big plans
3:29
down here at the plot. We're going to be
3:30
growing loads of new stuff and different
3:32
varieties down here at the plot. So make
3:35
sure you drop us a follow to stay up to
3:36
date with what we're growing this year
3:38
down at the plot and when we sew it all
3:39
and plant it all and harvest it all.
3:42
Until next time everyone, remember keep
3:44
smiling, keep shining and keep gardening
