0:39
gardening
0:42
Journey hey everybody and welcome back
0:45
to gardening with Ben well happy Friday
0:49
it is finally Friday and it seems funny
0:52
me saying this because I'm recording it
0:53
on
0:54
Sunday but happy Friday everybody and I
0:57
hope that you're all looking forward to
1:00
the weekend well it's the last day of
1:03
January finally it's the end of the
1:05
month January is the month that keeps on
1:09
giving it seems to last forever and ever
1:13
and I know obviously everybody has uh
1:15
that problem with getting paid early
1:17
before Christmas which is nice but then
1:19
you've got to Make It Last Forever
1:21
throughout January but it's finally the
1:24
end of the month and hopefully we will
1:27
be turning a corner soon and heading
1:30
towards Springtime which will soon be
1:32
upon us in
1:35
March so yeah what have we accomplished
1:39
in January this is where we talk about
1:41
our good things and our bad things of
1:44
the month well have we done a lot down
1:47
at the allotment yes we have and no we
1:51
haven't we feel like we've done a lot
1:53
but we haven't done loads to be honest
1:55
but we have uh H make up your mind Ben
1:59
have you how haven't
2:00
you but yeah we have had a good month
2:04
down in January obviously we've had the
2:06
snow which put off us for a few times
2:10
but we have managed to get lots done and
2:13
in January we worked on Tiding all my
2:16
shed up and sorting out some shelving in
2:18
it and sorting my pots out getting all
2:21
those sorted and really giving it a good
2:24
tidy up and clearing it all ready for
2:27
the month ahead because come March Time
2:30
my Greenhouse will be absolutely full to
2:32
busting with seeds what we have sewn
2:36
because that's when I se all my seats in
2:38
March
2:39
time obviously we'll be talking about
2:41
what seat you can goow in February
2:43
tomorrow but I don't do that I tend to
2:47
wait till March time because it's still
2:49
quite cold where we are and I
2:53
obviously want it to be warmer in my
2:55
Greenhouse it's not a heated Greenhouse
2:57
so we need to wait for the warmer
2:59
weather for to germinate the
3:02
seeds so we've done that we've also done
3:06
a lot of tidying up in my poly tunnel as
3:08
I've not used my polyol much for the
3:10
last couple of years but this year we
3:13
are bringing it back into action yes we
3:16
are bringing the poly tunel back into
3:19
full potential and getting it used we've
3:21
stopped growing our tomatoes in the
3:23
polyon now we grow those
3:25
Outdoors as they seem to do better and
3:28
you don't have to water them as often
3:30
uh because the ground stays damper than
3:33
it would do in a uh bucket of compost so
3:36
we grow our Tomatoes outside that's
3:39
Cherry ones uh the bigger ones you would
3:41
need to goow into a greenhouse because
3:43
they need a lot more sun to make them
3:45
rer so big ones will grow indoors if we
3:49
are growing any this year and obviously
3:52
my cucumbers I grew about three in my
3:54
polyan this year and I had about 15
3:57
plants outside what I got spare plants
4:00
left over and the ones out side did
4:03
fantastic they did so much better than
4:05
the ones in the polyon which is hard to
4:07
believe but yes they did so I'm going to
4:09
cut grow my cucumbers outside from now
4:12
on if they're doing that well I might as
4:14
well carry on doing them like that and
4:16
again they won't need as much water
4:18
because the ground stays wet and if it
4:21
rains it Waters them which is a bonus
4:24
but why are we fetching the poly tunnel
4:26
back into action you might say we are
4:29
going to be growing peppers in there and
4:31
we're going to be growing melons in
4:34
there and you're probably saying well
4:35
why don't you grow those outside but
4:37
them two things need more sunlight so
4:41
and more heat so that is the reason why
4:43
we're fetching the poly tunnel back into
4:45
action this year so we've got it all
4:47
tided out ready for them to grow which
4:49
we'll talk about in another
4:51
episode so I'm excited to be growing in
4:55
the polyol again obviously it mean I
4:56
need to go down there often and keep
4:58
things watered but it encourages me to
5:01
get out and about and visit the plot Mar
5:03
which I'm looking forward
5:05
to and we did a few repairs to the shed
5:09
because we've had a few bad storms uh
5:11
the roof blew off some of it so we had
5:14
to repair that but I only did like a b
5:17
job because my dad said to me that he is
5:20
going to help
5:22
me take all the roof off and start from
5:24
scratch and make a better roof which the
5:28
roof's probably being on for about 10
5:30
years now and it's perspects and it's
5:34
pretty strong but it's starting to go
5:36
brittle a bit now so when the wind comes
5:38
it just snaps it now so uh it's time for
5:41
a replacement it's done its job and it's
5:44
time for a fresh new roof and hopefully
5:47
we're going to make it waterproof as
5:49
well because when I'm in there there
5:51
drips qu for where all the screws are
5:54
because I've not done it right I've not
5:55
like capped it off I've not waterproofed
5:57
them so it has
6:00
it keeps getting me wet when it's
6:02
raining in there so hopefully we're
6:04
going to make it a bit more
6:05
waterproof and use stronger plastic as
6:08
well uh obviously we started looking on
6:11
Facebook Marketplace Facebook
6:13
Marketplace is a brilliant place if you
6:15
wanted to look for cheap stuff or free
6:18
stuff as a lot of people just post on
6:21
there to get rid of stuff so if you're
6:23
looking at doing work to your allotment
6:25
or sheds or green houses have a look on
6:28
Facebook Marketplace and you'll possibly
6:30
be able to find some good
6:33
Bargains so that is what we're going to
6:35
be doing soon when it gets a bit nicer
6:37
obviously we can't be doing it when it's
6:39
absolutely chuing it down and cold and
6:42
freezing because we don't want to be
6:44
doing that so
6:47
yeah we've not done much weeding in
6:49
January January we've not done anything
6:52
outside as it's been too cold the
6:54
ground's been too hard and all the weeds
6:58
don't seem to be growing much as at the
6:59
moment so we might turn all the beds
7:02
over in February that might be one of
7:03
our jobs that we do in that month but
7:07
yeah overall January has been a pretty
7:10
decent month and obviously we're
7:13
starting to do more content on YouTube
7:15
we're getting more videos out there and
7:18
we're going to film loads this year
7:19
loads of videos for you to watch and
7:22
obviously we're getting more and more
7:23
content out on our Facebook page for you
7:25
to read and share and in in Digest so I
7:30
hope that you found that useful so yeah
7:33
I'm happy that I've been down to my
7:34
alotment in January years ago I never
7:38
used to go down to my plot in January I
7:40
used to finish off my plot at end of
7:42
October then not go back down to the
7:45
allotment until March time and I'd be
7:47
rushing at the last minute to be getting
7:49
everything tidied cleaned up and ready
7:52
for the months ahead so I tend to carry
7:55
on now throughout the winter period so
7:57
that I've got all these jobs done and I
7:59
can concentrate on growing my seeds
8:01
throughout the March period because when
8:04
I start sewing my seeds in March it's
8:06
going to be a lot of work I'll obviously
8:08
need to S them more and then keep them
8:10
more water and then we have to pick them
8:12
all out and pot them up individually and
8:15
yeah it takes a lot of work so that is
8:17
the reason why I continue doing all my
8:19
work in throughout October through to
8:23
February because you can't get a lot of
8:26
stuff done and it's not necessarily just
8:28
digging over it's like Tiding up and
8:30
getting it all clean and ready for the
8:32
year ahead so yeah January has been a
8:36
successful month down at the allotment
8:38
hopefully we'll get lots done in
8:40
February I'm looking forward to it
8:42
obviously the spring bulbs and
8:44
everything will start popping through
8:45
now and start showing the heads and
8:48
hopefully start fetching some spring
8:50
color down at the allotment because
8:51
that's what I want I want to see all the
8:52
Croakers out I want to see the daffodils
8:55
out I'm looking forward to the heis of
8:56
smells when you walk onto the allotment
8:59
so yeah yeah I'm excited for the
9:00
springtime and I'm sure you are all too
9:04
so tomorrow's episode we'll be back with
9:06
a new podcast and it will be talking
9:08
about all the things that you can s in
9:10
February like I said most things I won't
9:12
be S until March time but it's there
9:14
just as a guide for anybody that's
9:17
