0:21
and let's enjoy today's episode hello
0:25
and welcome back to gardening with Ben
0:28
well it's the day after after the
0:30
horrible storm dudle and yes I have been
0:36
down to the allotment today that will
0:38
have been yesterday if you're listening
0:40
today I always record the episode a day
0:43
before so that it's out and ready for
0:45
you to listen from 6:00 in the morning
0:47
if possible so yeah I was down at the
0:50
alotment today when storm Dudley was
0:53
first off hitting where I am in
0:56
Sheffield and to be honest
1:00
it SED really really bad I was inside my
1:04
shed for some of it as it was raining at
1:06
the time so I was trying to stay
1:08
protected from the rain and my shed was
1:11
literally shaking from the winds and I
1:14
was thinking it's going to take off any
1:16
minute you'll see me flying Somewhere
1:18
Over the Rainbow uh to another land um
1:23
but yeah I am so praying that it's still
1:26
standing tomorrow I'm currently just
1:29
charging up my drill as we speak because
1:33
I have lost a few plastic sheet sheets
1:35
off uh the shed it's just that
1:37
corrugated plastic uh what you can
1:40
purchase it has been up for about 6
1:42
years so they've with stod the wind and
1:45
everything for six years or so so it's
1:47
it's had its money's worth and the sheet
1:50
in about Β£8 to replace them but where
1:54
they cracked I'm thinking I will be able
1:56
to drill them back on uh they should be
1:59
okay to drill back on so my plan is
2:02
tomorrow to take all the front off my
2:04
shed undrill it all and make it stronger
2:09
uh because it didn't have like enough
2:11
wood to screw on to so they were
2:13
rattling around in the wind and that's
2:15
what's caused them to crack where the
2:16
screws are and snap basically uh and
2:20
crack off so hopefully I can get all
2:23
that done tomorrow so I'm charging my
2:25
drill up as we speak but you never know
2:27
I might go back to the allotment
2:29
tomorrow there not be no shed there
2:31
whatsoever I might be building a brand
2:33
new Shed from scratch but hopefully it
2:35
won't come to that and if it does I'll
2:38
definitely be setting up a girl fund me
2:39
page because I can't afford to buy build
2:42
another Shed from scratch not at the
2:44
moment not until we get millions of
2:47
people listening to this
2:48
podcast which we'll take certainly some
2:51
time to do so yeah fingers crossed we
2:54
can get down to the plot tomorrow uh
2:57
come rain or shine uh I'm going going to
3:00
be working outside and getting my shed
3:03
back fastened up together and we have
3:06
storm Eugene coming on Friday which is
3:09
going to be a lot stronger than this one
3:11
apparently so I am dreading that because
3:14
it was shaking around today and if it's
3:17
going to be even stronger we will see if
3:19
it withstands storm Eugene and the thing
3:22
is I won't be back down to the plot
3:24
after Friday for another four days so if
3:28
it blows over it's down for a bit uh but
3:32
hopefully fingers crossed it will stand
3:35
the storm but we'll have to see uh and I
3:38
will certainly share pictures of it if
3:40
it does blow
3:41
away you just have to laugh at these
3:43
things sometimes definitely um but yeah
3:49
we have been good uh we've been busy on
3:53
the plot today um digging over my beds
3:56
getting all them cleared we've still got
3:58
quite a few more beds today
4:00
so yeah with plenty of work to get done
4:03
so quite pleased we we possibly cleared
4:05
about three or four beds uh we've
4:08
probably got about six or so to go so we
4:12
are cracking on and then it's moving on
4:14
to all my Pathways getting all them
4:15
cleared and then getting all the rubbish
4:17
cleared away and then I can move on to
4:20
clearing the top of my plot um that's a
4:24
bit that I've not really used fully yet
4:26
I I planted a few spring bulbs last year
4:29
uh but I don't know if they'll come
4:31
through or not they're currently covered
4:32
over with leaves and rubbish and weeds
4:35
at the moment so we'll see if if they
4:37
come through you never know they might
4:39
do we might get a nice
4:41
display and then it's case getting rid
4:43
of all the rubbish off there um and also
4:46
one of my friends popped down to see me
4:47
on the allotment and brought me some
4:49
coffee which is always a very good
4:52
welcome I'm always pleased to see him
4:54
when he brings coffee down to me down at
4:57
the plot I'm get a bit of a catchup
4:59
and just showing him my shed and how
5:02
well it is and yeah there's lots of work
5:05
to get done in there but we'll get it
5:06
all done with and yeah I've been busy
5:10
doing articles um I'm starting to try
5:12
and do more articles to share on my
5:15
Facebook page CU not everybody's got
5:17
access to
5:18
podcasts um and some people prefer just
5:21
to have a read so that they can go over
5:23
stuff again so yeah yesterday I shared
5:26
all the seeds that were come plant in
5:27
February obviously I've done that on a
5:29
podcast C uh but like I said it's
5:31
sometimes good to read and see what
5:34
things actually need doing and then you
5:35
can tick them off as you've done them
5:38
and then also I've shared today well
5:43
yesterday if you're listening to it now
5:46
uh we shared what jobs need doing in the
5:48
garden uh especially when it's not
5:50
blowing a gale uh I'm sure most people's
5:53
jobs over the next few days we'll be
5:55
doing repairing and fixing green houses
5:58
and poly tunnels that are blown away
5:59
away and pots that are blown over and
6:02
bulbs that have blown flat and trees
6:05
falling over everywhere so yeah there's
6:08
going to be quite a lot of work to do
6:09
from the winds what everybody's having
6:11
at the moment so we're going to get
6:14
stuck in with all that and yeah
6:16
hopefully tomorrow's Thursday so or
6:20
today's Thursday I keep thinking yeah uh
6:23
so we've got Thursday and Friday at the
6:25
alotment so hopefully I may possibly get
6:28
all my beds dug up by the end of the
6:30
week we will have to wait and see if I
6:33
put in the hours and the time and the
6:35
weather stays decent like I said I'm
6:38
hoping that it's going to be a dry day
6:39
tomorrow looking at the weather forecast
6:41
for today it's actually going to be all
6:44
right I'm hoping that the rain doesn't
6:46
come until later in the day and then on
6:49
Friday it might be a wash out if this
6:51
storm does come uh but we're going to
6:53
have to wait and see if we can get stuff
6:55
done but I will definitely still go down
6:58
to the plot on Friday and I'll be
7:00
working in my shed if it's raining
7:02
because we've got to start cracking on
7:04
with now getting that ready for the
7:06
seeds because we're only about a month
7:09
away from when I'm going to be planting
7:10
all my seeds so it's got to be in shape
7:14
and tidy and all my shell inut up
7:17
because if you've not followed my
7:19
pictures before of what my shed looks
7:21
like in the springtime you will be
7:23
amazed with how many seeds I do anyone
7:25
would think that I'm doing it for a
7:27
living uh selling plants but I'm
7:29
certainly not I just absolutely fill my
7:31
shed to busting because I do share all
7:33
the plants out as well what I grw my
7:35
seeds we have alotment holders so think
7:38
yourself lucky if you're on my allotment
7:39
plot because I do share stuff out if
7:42
I've got leftovers and stuff like that
7:44
because I do love to share and like I
7:46
said I'm going to be growing so many
7:48
flowers this year um I bought all my
7:50
flower seeds the other week and that
7:53
alone possibly about 30 packets so I'm
7:57
going to need 30 trades for that so
7:59
going to have to try and get some more
8:01
trays uh I use gravel trays because
8:04
they're a lot stronger than the plastic
8:06
seed tray ones but as long as you make
8:08
sure you drill some holes in them to
8:10
have drainage in them they are perfect
8:12
and they'll last few years as well you
8:14
won't have no issues with them once
8:16
you've got them you won't need to
8:18
replace them ever unless you stand on
8:19
them and break
8:20
them but hopefully you won't be doing
8:23
that but yeah uh we've got lots of
8:26
gravel trays as it is myself uh I did
8:29
use the uh cheap plastic ones but we've
8:31
replaced them all with gravel ones
8:33
eventually um I usually wait until
8:35
they're on sale uh but we'll have to
8:37
have a look around and see what we can
8:39
get if we do need any more but we'll
8:41
have a look around I do like to recycle
8:43
tubs as well like when you've had your
8:45
grapes and I even use all my milk
8:48
cartons as well uh I have four pints of
8:50
milk when I get my milk um and I save
8:55
all them I cut the tops off them and I
8:57
put some holes in the bottom of them
9:00
and use them to Su my seeds in because
9:02
you don't need big seed trays for some
9:04
seeds because they've only got about
9:05
five or six seeds in them so you can
9:07
just plant them in them and use stuff if
9:10
you can do and save yourself money as
9:13
much as possible really because it can
9:15
be expensive gardening obviously um you
9:19
get the enjoyment out of it but it can
9:21
cost you more to do the growing of the
9:23
fruit and vegetables and actually go out
9:25
and purchase vegetables themselves but
9:28
it's the taste it's certainly is a lot
9:30
better so yep if you're new to this
