This video is all about appreciating the things we love most about our gardens. I talk about the satisfaction of growing your own food, the peace that comes from time outdoors, and the sense of achievement that builds over each season.
I also reflect on community, shared experiences, and the simple joys that keep us coming back to our growing spaces. A positive and uplifting celebration of gardening and everything it brings to our lives.

Ben hello and welcome back to gardening
0:45
with Ben for a brand new episode and
0:48
guess what this week is it's National
0:50
allotment week yes I didn't even realize
0:53
until I checked it out when it was I
0:55
know it's every year but I had to check
0:57
it out and this week is National
1:00
allotment week and wow we'll be
1:02
celebrating all things allotments this
1:04
week obviously this being a allotment
1:06
and gardening podcast we will definitely
1:09
be celebrating it and I'll also be
1:11
celebrating it on my Facebook page and
1:13
on my Instagram so make sure you get
1:15
involved in the comments and get
1:17
involved with national allotment week so
1:20
yeah get sharing those allotment
1:22
pictures and sharing what you enjoy most
1:26
about it because that is what allotments
1:27
are all about so what have we been up to
1:30
today obviously like I say the episodes
1:33
are later in the day when I'm off work
1:35
because I I like to talk about what I've
1:37
been up to at the plot and a lot of
1:39
people like to hear and Sh uh me share
1:41
what I've been doing down at the
1:44
alment so we have been very busy today
1:49
in the boiling hot heat yes it's been
1:51
boiling hot again hotter than it was
1:53
yesterday I think so we got down there
1:56
possibly around half Nish today I might
1:59
try and get down there even earlier
2:01
tomorrow cuz I think it's going to be
2:02
even hotter tomorrow it's certainly
2:04
heating up now uh as you all see from my
2:07
Instagram
2:08
pictures but yeah it's certainly getting
2:11
hotter
2:12
now and obviously first thing I did was
2:15
give it all a good water in uh yes it's
2:18
probably a bit too late at 10:00 but
2:19
that's the only time I can get down
2:21
there so that's when it had a good drink
2:24
of water and everything's surviving
2:27
pretty well at the moment it's all
2:29
looking Healy uh nothing seems to be
2:32
dying off as the ground does store a lot
2:34
of water but obviously they do like a
2:36
good drink every soften and as all my
2:39
strawberries have sending out the
2:41
runners and stuff now they need the
2:43
water to help them take rot and to
2:45
survived to be honest so yeah we're
2:48
giving them plenty of water and
2:49
obviously my pumpkins need plenty of
2:51
water as well to make them swell and get
2:54
bigger and hopefully get a decent size
2:57
one I I had to take one off yesterday
2:59
one had gone a bit rotten so we took
3:02
that one off which will encourage other
3:03
ones to grow bigger and stronger so
3:06
hopefully they won't rot but we'll see
3:08
how they get on and see if they survive
3:10
so hopefully fingers crossed we do get a
3:13
decent Siz pumpkin this year I do like
3:15
to give it a try every single year even
3:17
if it's just for the fun of it and I
3:18
don't necessarily eat it I just like to
3:20
have a go at growing a nice big pumpkin
3:24
so we've been doing that and then my mom
3:27
came down to the allotment and she was
3:29
going around and I was helping her pick
3:31
the black bre because I picked some
3:32
cooking apples yesterday uh and
3:35
obviously I have have been having lots
3:37
of apple crumble at the moment and she's
3:41
actually took some plums home with her
3:43
and also some more cooking apples some
3:46
raspberries so I'm looking forward to
3:48
that crumble coming up and I I'll be
3:51
living on crumble for the next couple of
3:54
months
3:55
definitely whever the produce is coming
3:57
I'll be living on crumble and and once
4:00
all they've done all my cooking apples
4:02
I'll be on to the eating apples and you
4:03
can make crumbles with eating apples as
4:05
well uh so yeah
4:08
definitely and possibly pears I don't
4:10
know I've never tried a pear crumble
4:12
maybe that's something new but yeah um I
4:16
I do love a good pudding uh for
4:19
tea especially with cold custard on it's
4:22
absolutely delicious so we've been doing
4:25
that today and one job that I wanted to
4:28
do is that my plum tree has really grown
4:31
massive this year for some reason it
4:33
seems to have shot up out of nowhere
4:35
I've not got many plums on it this year
4:37
cuz I had a big Harvest last year um so
4:41
it's sort of recovering from producing
4:43
all the Harvest last year so I wanted to
4:47
give it a good pruning this year because
4:48
it is getting too big and too out of
4:50
hand we're not meant to let them grow
4:52
too big on our allotments they meant to
4:54
be dwarf uh trees but yeah sh so we have
5:00
got to give it a good pruning back and
5:03
apples pears
5:05
and them sort of trees you can prune
5:09
them back in Autumn wintertime plums
5:13
cherries apricots anything that's got a
5:15
stone in them cherries you prune them in
5:19
July June time obviously we're in August
5:21
now but it's not cold so we need to get
5:24
that pruned before winter so that's what
5:27
we're doing we're giving it a good
5:28
pruning and yes I'm going in there and
5:31
giving it a really good hacking back but
5:33
every so often I do like to do that and
5:35
it seems to come back bigger and
5:37
stronger EV every time I've done this I
5:40
don't know much about pruning whatsoever
5:42
so don't ask me about pruning I know you
5:44
meant to uh not let any branches hang
5:47
down or cross each other and you meant
5:50
to let the air get through the tree so
5:52
that stuff doesn't rot and stuff like
5:54
that and sweat but that's all I know
5:57
about pruning I'm not a very good pruner
5:59
I just go in there and hack it and hope
6:00
for the
6:01
best that's what gardening's all about
6:04
it's about just giving it a go and
6:06
hoping for the best and I've done that
6:07
for the past few years with my fruit
6:09
trees and yeah I I've cracked it every
6:11
year I've uh I seem to get good harvest
6:14
uh so I'm not complaining but this year
6:17
I really do want to give my Plum Tree a
6:18
good prune back uh I won't be expecting
6:21
any plums on it next year possibly or
6:23
the year after I might just get a small
6:25
little Harvest but yeah sometimes you
6:27
got to give to put back in
6:30
so it's going to have a massive haircut
6:32
it's going to have a good trim back and
6:35
hopefully in a couple of years time
6:37
we'll be getting a good harvest and I
6:38
did plant two new Victoria plum trees
6:41
this year uh obviously they're still
6:43
small so they'll possibly take about
6:46
four or five years to develop and get
6:47
some fruit on them so we'll have to wait
6:50
for them unfortunately but then we'll
6:51
have three Victoria plum trees and
6:54
hopefully each year I'd have a big
6:57
Harvest off each tree but
7:00
yeah absolutely beautiful and Brilliant
7:03
so I'm looking forward to them so yeah
7:06
that has been what we've been up to
7:08
today so the topic today for National
7:12
alotment week is I'd say what are the
7:17
benefits of having an allotment uh what
7:20
are the good things about having an
7:22
allotment and getting from it well the
7:25
best thing about me having my allotment
7:28
is that it's somewhere for me to go I
7:30
live in a flat on my own and I don't see
7:33
anybody or whatsoever uh obviously being
7:36
cooped up inside in a flat when you're
7:38
working as well I work from home most
7:41
days uh when I'm on shift and that's for
7:44
like 12 hours so I don't get much
7:46
daylight apart from being outside on the
7:48
alotment so it's a good place to go and
7:51
get out of the way I sometimes I don't
7:54
even do anything down at the alotment I
7:56
just sit there relax listen to my music
8:00
and just enjoy being out in the open
8:02
space look all the wildlife this year
8:04
I've got so many bees so many
8:06
butterflies are flying around it's so
8:08
nice to see everything out and enjoying
8:11
it and that's what my allotment is about
8:14
and it's great when I go go down and I
8:16
see my plot neighbor down there uh I
8:19
talk to him quite a bit and all his
8:21
family and go and say hello to the other
8:24
plot holders and it's funny because
8:26
sometimes when I don't go down to the
8:28
alotment my plot neighbor won't go down
8:29
to his alotment uh so it encourages him
8:32
to go down as well if I don't go down he
8:34
doesn't go down um but yeah it's good to
8:38
see him come down as well and enjoy it
8:41
and I try to encourage him as well for
8:43
to work through the winter and I'll be
8:44
doing that again this year to encourage
8:46
him uh to get through with the winter
8:48
because he's got quite a few tasks he
8:50
wants to do as winter projects
8:52
and before like I used to say I used to
8:55
hibernate over winter I didn't used to
8:57
go down to the alotment whatsoever
8:58
during the the winter months I just used
9:00
to leave it and start again in February
9:03
but obviously the main benefit from the
9:05
allotment is the fresh produce yes I
9:07
don't eat it all yes I give quite a bit
9:09
of it away but it's great to get
9:12
fantastic produce from out of the
9:14
allotment and especially at the moment
9:17
if I could just grow fruit all over my
9:19
allotment I would do but you're not
9:20
allowed to just grow fruit you meant to
9:21
grow a mixture of
9:22
everything but the fruit I'm getting at
9:25
the moment the blackberries The
9:26
Raspberries the plums the apples and the
9:29
pen will be ready in September possibly
9:31
October time uh I've had strawberries um
9:36
but yeah the fruit is just phenomenal
9:39
and I could just live on that and yeah
9:42
my allotment costs me about 80 a year uh
9:45
with water
9:47
included but I definitely get monies
9:50
back from the amount of food that I get
9:52
from the plot and all the crumbles I get
9:54
from it as well all the
9:56
puddings as uh crumbles aren't expensive
10:00
to make all you need to do is make the
10:01
crumbl on top and that certainly doesn't
10:03
cost much whatsoever not unless you're
10:05
using L
10:07
pack but yeah
10:10
definitely um it it brings me so much
10:13
joy and the more I'm there the more that
10:18
I enjoy it and the community of people
10:22
that I've met during my blogging my live
10:26
streams my Instagram posts from the
10:29
gardening Community it's absolutely
10:31
fantastic I absolutely love it and I
10:34
wouldn't change it for the world from
10:36
just starting that allotment blog like
10:37
so many years ago to where it is now
10:41
with over 20,000 people following me on
10:43
Facebook 10,000 on Instagram uh a couple
10:48
of thousand on Tik
10:50
Tok uh but yeah uh where I am now it's
10:54
absolutely brilliant so thank you for
10:57
those that do support me and and do
11:00
enjoy everything that I do I had a nice
11:02
message today from somebody who likes
11:04
seeing all my Instagram posts I had
11:06
somebody the other day message me about
11:07
my podcast about how much they enjoy
11:10
them and how much they love listening to
11:13
it even if it's my broad yor accent
11:15
which I don't think I've got a broad
11:17
yorra accent let me know if you think
11:19
that I've got a very broad yor accent
11:21
somebody said that at work the other day
11:23
they said I'm the most yoria person in
11:26
our office but I really don't think so
11:28
so let me know if I do come across as a
11:31
broad Yorkshire person obviously if
11:34
you're are not from uh Yorkshire uh
11:36
you'll have seen Yorkshire films and
11:38
stuff with Shawn Bean in and stuff like
11:40
that so let me know that's how claim to
11:43
fame Shawn Bean in Sheffield I have met
11:46
him a few times I used to knock around
11:47
with his nephew but yeah definitely um
11:53
this is the best thing that I've done
11:55
and hopefully I will continue doing this
11:58
podcast and all my blog
11:59
until the end of life um I'm hoping that
12:03
my allotment will keep going until I am
12:06
a pensioner until I can retire and enjoy
12:08
it even more and Technology might be a
12:11
lot different then you might be virtual
12:13
guests on my allotment and be there with
12:16
me standing there watching me talk uh
12:19
rather than over a phone who knows what
12:22
technology will be like then and how
12:24
I'll put things across podcast might not
12:26
even be around then so yeah thank you so
12:30
much everybody I hope you enjoy National
12:32
allotment week and make sure you do
12:35
encourage people to get allotments make
12:37
sure you do encourage people to Garden
12:39
make sure you do encourage people to
12:41
grow their own fruit and vegetables and
12:43
get involved in growing especially
12:45
children get them started while they're
12:47
young let them taste the benefits of
12:50
growing produce and let them enjoy it as
12:53
well and they'll grow up and when they
12:56
get older they'll want to do their own
12:58
growing the veg and that is how I
13:00
started my allotment so until tomorrow's
