Welcome to our weekly update and welcome
0:02
to gardening with Ben. What a busy week
0:05
we have had down at the a lotment. First
0:08
off was repairing the poly tunnel due to
0:10
the high winds that we had last week.
0:13
Yeah, we had some damage to it, but
0:15
we've taped it back up and hopefully it
0:17
will last a bit longer. The spring bulbs
0:21
are looking more stunning every time
0:23
that I come down. All the tulips are
0:25
starting to open up now and absolutely
0:30
So, they're coming on really well. All
0:32
the raised beds, they're coming on.
0:35
Everything's germinating in here. The
0:37
peas are starting to pop through now.
0:40
It's 800 peas, so hopefully we have a
0:43
bumper crop of peas in here. Like I
0:44
said, it's 30° in here, so I don't know
0:47
why I'm wearing a jumper, but yes, it's
0:49
absolutely boiling. So, hopefully those
0:51
will speed up and get growing pretty
0:53
fast. And when they get big enough,
0:55
we'll put some netting up to help cling
0:56
them on and help the support of growing
0:59
them. We've also planted all our onions.
1:02
All our onions are out and planted. Uh
1:04
we've got three varieties. We've got a
1:06
red one. We've got uh champion one and a
1:09
sturgeon one. So, three varieties of
1:12
onions. They were grown in cell trays to
1:14
start off with to get them growing well,
1:16
and then we planted them out. They look
1:17
better than my winter onions. My winter
1:19
onions aren't looking very good, but
1:21
we'll keep them in for the time being
1:23
and see how they get on. But yeah,
1:25
they're coming along pretty well, the
1:27
spring spring summer onions. So, yeah,
1:30
they're doing pretty well. We've also
1:34
been planting some gladioli. We've had
1:38
100 gladiolized plant. So, we planted
1:41
those all in plant pots as obviously I
1:44
have issues with the squirrels down
1:45
here. So, I want to keep them netted
1:47
until they're big enough. And then when
1:48
they're big enough, then we'll take the
1:50
netting off and let them grow. So
1:52
hopefully we'll have a beautiful display
1:54
of gladiolas down here this year.
1:56
Obviously, you can have them as a cut
1:58
flower or as a display flower. And I'm
2:01
going to have them as a display flower
2:03
cuz it'll help the pollinators down here
2:06
come down and enjoy them. So yeah, we've
2:10
done that. We've also been busy with
2:13
doing some weeding because it's been
2:14
nice weather and yeah, it's been pretty
2:17
glorious down here and things are
2:19
certainly shooting up. The plum trees
2:21
are coming out into blossom. I've been
2:23
helping them by giving them a little
2:25
tickle with a paintbrush to help with
2:26
the pollination. Although there is bees
2:30
a little bit of help gets more produce.
2:33
So, we want lots of plums this year on
2:35
our Victoria plum trees. So, I've been
2:37
helping pollinate them and hopefully
2:40
we'll get some decent plums on them. And
2:42
obviously, now is the time to start
2:44
doing a lot of watering because things
2:46
are drying out fast because it is
2:48
getting warmer. Yes, we did have snow
2:49
the other day, but it is warm in the
2:52
poly tunnel and in the greenhouse. So,
2:53
we're having to keep things watered and
2:55
keep looking after things because
2:57
obviously things dry out pretty much. So
3:00
yeah, we have had a busy week down here
3:02
and I've probably not mentioned
3:03
everything that I've done because I've
3:04
probably forgotten it. But yeah, it's
3:06
going to be a busy few weeks down here.
3:09
We've got some exciting things to be
3:10
showing you and lots of new items that
3:12
we're getting for the a lotment. So stay
3:14
tuned for that. So until next time
3:16
everyone remember keep smiling, keep
3:18
shining and keep gardening with
