0:21
and let's enjoy today's episode hey
0:25
everyone and welcome back to gardening
0:28
with Ben well it's
0:30
Saturday it's been a hell of a storm and
0:35
I've seen a lot of damage to people's
0:38
allotments which hasn't been good
0:41
whatsoever
0:43
um the that's the thing you can't
0:46
prepare for anything like this you just
0:49
have to sit and wait it out and see what
0:53
happens in the aftermath of the storm
0:56
thankfully up north in Sheffield it's
0:59
not been as bad as what I thought it
1:02
would have been um I don't think it
1:05
seems as bad as what storm Dudley was
1:08
here in
1:09
Sheffield uh storm dudly seem to do a
1:12
lot of damage to my shed uh but I'm
1:15
thinking that it might have survived
1:17
this thing is I won't be able to go and
1:19
check it until Wednesday at the
1:22
earliest which will be a while just
1:25
sitting thinking has it survived or not
1:28
I may have to message one of my other
1:30
allotment friends and see if they can
1:33
pop down and just have a check make sure
1:36
it's not blown away uh I didn't see it
1:38
flying around in the sky so hopefully
1:40
it's still standing but yeah um I I am
1:45
worried about what it'll look like uh
1:48
but like I said I'll just have to sit
1:50
and wait it out and see what it looks
1:52
like when I get down there on Wednesday
1:55
um make sure I've charged my uh drill up
1:59
uh to do any repairs that need doing but
2:02
yeah Wednesday could be a day full of
2:04
repairs down at the allotment getting it
2:06
all back built again but we shall see we
2:09
shall see if I have to build a
2:11
crowdfunding page to get it built back
2:13
up
2:15
again but yeah we we will see hopefully
2:18
it will be all right uh like I said I've
2:21
got quite a few plastic panels what I
2:23
need to replace this year and get fixed
2:27
to add the extra warmth in it have
2:30
placed it with poly tunnel covering for
2:32
the time being but um the corrugated
2:35
plastic does make it a lot more warmer
2:38
uh so we do need to get some new ones of
2:40
those so that's the plan this year uh so
2:44
if anybody's got any free corrugated
2:47
plastic uh sheeted drop me a DM in
2:50
Instagram uh if you're close by in
2:52
Sheffield feel free I'm always up for
2:55
free B uh but yeah uh they're about n
2:59
pounder sheet so keep listening to these
3:02
podcasts and it'll help fund them as
3:05
everything that I earn from these
3:07
podcast goes back into my
3:09
allotment and producing the content that
3:11
you get and yeah I've been buying quite
3:15
a few things for it recently like my new
3:17
climbing roses my phoness black bra
3:22
my uh blue BRD what I've planted uh so
3:26
yeah quite a bit I'm still after some
3:29
yellow
3:30
raspberries for that is my next on the
3:33
list I would like some of them so we'll
3:36
have to have a look around maybe we'll
3:37
have to order some of them online uh to
3:39
get them ones but we'll see I would like
3:42
some that is the plan for this year uh
3:46
they've been on my bucket list for a
3:48
while and some pineapple flavored
3:50
strawberries I've seen quite a few of
3:52
those in the past uh we used to have
3:55
them at the Garden Center where I worked
3:58
I've been told they're very delicious
4:00
so I may get some of those this year but
4:04
on with the show and let's try and
4:06
forget about the storm um well it's
4:09
forecast for snow actually for Saturday
4:12
and Sunday and thankfully I am working
4:15
uh this podcast has been pre-recorded on
4:18
Friday night so that you can listen to
4:20
it on Saturday uh I do proom try and
4:24
promise to keep these podcasts going
4:25
when I'm working uh but it's just
4:28
finding the time after you've done 12 12
4:29
hours work you don't feel like going
4:32
back onto a computer and doing my it
4:35
work uh you just like to rest and relax
4:39
so hopefully we'll do some
4:40
pre-recordings for you so that they'll
4:42
keep going out and I may do Sunday
4:45
straight after this one because uh I do
4:47
like watching an deck on a Saturday
4:49
night and Saturday night take away his
4:52
back on uh but yeah it's sometimes F
4:55
hard finding subjects to talk about all
4:57
the time but I was talking to one of my
5:00
Instagram followers and I mentioned that
5:03
sometimes I find it hard to find things
5:05
to talk about all the time and he says
5:07
just talk about your day people enjoy it
5:10
talk about what You' been up to and
5:12
share with people everything what's
5:14
going off so if you do enjoy it please
5:18
let me know if you've got any subjects
5:20
that you want me to talk about send me a
5:22
message it's always good to hear what
5:24
other people like to listen to and to be
5:27
honest I don't really listen to podcast
5:30
myself so I don't know what a lot of
5:32
people's podcasts actually sound like uh
5:35
so I do really need to start listening
5:37
to other peoples to get ideas of what
5:39
they actually talk about and I see so
5:42
many people spending hours edited
5:45
editing them getting them all ready but
5:47
mine's just recorded raw Straight From
5:50
the Heart and straight up for you to
5:52
listen to Just Me waffling on for 10
5:55
minutes every single
5:58
episode but but you all seem to love
6:00
them so thank you for that so yeah um
6:04
obviously it's the weekend and most of
6:06
you will be off work I'm working
6:09
obviously uh but it's a time for doing
6:13
your jobs in your garden so what jobs do
6:16
need doing in the garden at the moment
6:19
obviously we do need to be planting the
6:21
fruit up if you're wanting to plant
6:23
fruit now is the time to be getting that
6:26
in the ground because while the ground
6:28
is wet while the ground is soft it's not
6:32
frozen at the moment we' not been
6:33
getting much Frost now is the time to be
6:36
getting it in it can be settling into
6:38
the ground it can be drinking the water
6:40
it can be getting those roots down
6:42
straight into the ground and getting
6:44
anchored obviously the fruit will take a
6:46
while to start a formation but you've
6:49
made that first step in getting it
6:51
planted if you plant fruit in summer
6:53
it's hard to get it established because
6:55
it's dry there's not much moisture in
6:58
the ground and it's hard to get them to
7:00
go get started that's why they always
7:03
say to get them started in winter when
7:05
they're pretty much dormant and get them
7:08
going in the ground so we need to be
7:11
getting all that
7:12
done and also I do encourage you if
7:15
you've never grown sweet peas before go
7:18
out this weekend go and buy a couple of
7:21
packets the cheap enough in wilers or
7:24
bmq or any other Garden Center just get
7:27
a couple of packets you usually get
7:29
about about 25 to 30 in a packet and
7:34
that will be enough for a nice little
7:37
border just get a plastic lunch box like
7:41
I do put a layer of kitchen roll in the
7:44
bottom of it spray it with some water so
7:46
it's damp and then put the Sweet Peas on
7:48
top and close the lid and that will
7:51
start them germinating after a few days
7:54
I usually get 100% germination rate on
7:58
Sweet Peas once once they've started
8:00
germinating and you can see the roots
8:02
and the Sprout popping out pop them into
8:05
some soil into individual cells or into
8:08
a
8:09
pot and then when it gets to around
8:12
April May time then you can plant them
8:15
straight out in the ground and they will
8:17
look absolutely fantastic if you've
8:20
never grown flowers before these need to
8:22
be the first flowers that you'll grow in
8:24
your garden or alotment they easy to
8:28
grow you just keep picking them when the
8:30
flowers keep growing and people will
8:34
love them the more you pick them the
8:36
more they will flower and you will have
8:38
some epic
8:40
results and the other thing that you can
8:43
be doing this weekend is going through
8:45
all your seed packets like me I've got a
8:49
I'm just looking at my bag full that
8:51
I've got now like I said I get two
8:53
magazines a month uh grow own magazine
8:55
and kitchen Garden Magazine and each
8:57
magazine comes with 10 free packets of
8:59
seeds well they're not free because
9:00
you're paying for the magazine uh but 10
9:03
packets of seeds so I get 20 packets of
9:06
seeds a month so you can think of how
9:08
many packets of seeds I've actually got
9:11
I could open up my own garden center I
9:14
may have to open up an online shop
9:15
selling my packets of seeds off to
9:17
everybody uh but yeah that might be
9:20
something down the line uh line if I do
9:23
need to fund a new
9:25
shed but yeah just go through all your
9:28
packets of seeds have a look at what
9:29
you've got what you need to get and
9:32
think of that new thing that you want to
9:34
try growing this year have a look around
9:36
have you got a poly tunnel why don't you
9:39
start try and have a look at growing
9:40
some melons there's plenty of varieties
9:43
that can grow in the UK I've been doing
9:46
quite a lot of research today cuz I like
9:48
to update my website every so often and
9:50
send articles out and stuff and I'm
9:53
going to be sending an article out about
9:54
how to grow melons soon uh I'll do a
9:57
podcast talking about one soon
10:00
and there's so many varieties that can
10:02
be grown in the UK these days as long as
10:04
you've got a hot place to grow them like
10:07
polyon aot Greenhouse you will have some
10:09
great success from them and hopefully
10:12
some fantastic results so have a look at
10:15
trying to grow something new let me know
10:17
what you're going to try uh if I know
10:20
any tips and advice on them I'll do a
10:21
podcast on it so have a look around send
10:24
me a message and get in touch so yeah I
