Let's plant some autumn and winter color
0:03
in my flower beds. Welcome to Gardening
0:05
with Ben. And today we're going to be
0:07
planting some autuminal and winter color
0:10
into my flower bed that I did the other
0:13
week. I rearranged all the plants in it
0:15
and sorted them all out and it's created
0:17
quite a bit of space in there. I've
0:19
planted must be about 500 bulbs in
0:23
there. So, they're going to absolutely
0:25
jam-pack this flower bed in springtime.
0:27
I can't wait to see what that looks
0:28
like. But however, the spring bulbs
0:31
won't be ready till springtime. So, we
0:33
need to fill the area that's bare with
0:36
some color because I do love a bit of
0:38
color during the autumn and winter
0:39
months when all the shrubs are starting
0:41
to look bare and tired. It's nice to add
0:44
that bit of extra color into that area.
0:47
So, let's show you what we're going to
0:48
be planting today. So, we are going to
0:51
be planting some cichlmen. And we've got
0:53
four packs. They're all mixed packs, so
0:56
plenty of different color. and hopefully
0:59
with some pinks, some whites, some reds.
1:01
As you can see, some have got flowers on
1:04
already, so that's even better. And
1:07
these grow well in well drained soil in
1:10
full sun or partial shade. They do like
1:13
the like woodlands um cichlmen, so they
1:16
need that like area to be planted in.
1:19
So, it's partially shady where I'm going
1:21
to be planting these. These can get down
1:26
So they quite hardy but not fully hardy.
1:29
So try and plant them somewhere where
1:31
there's not much frost. These ones
1:33
growing in Yorkshire. So even better.
1:35
Yorkshire cichlmen. So they're used to
1:38
the temperatures around Yorkshire. So
1:41
obviously when growing them make sure
1:44
that you keep deadheading them so that
1:45
they keep flowering and obviously you
1:47
can give them a bit of feed as well to
1:49
help boost the flowers on them. So,
1:51
let's get all these arranged and get
1:53
them ready for planting. So, this is the
1:55
area that we're going to be planting in.
1:57
As you can see, there's a lot of bare
1:58
soil around. So, we need to fill it up
2:01
with some winter and autumn and all
2:03
color to just make it look a bit more
2:05
nicer and cheery until all the spring
2:08
bulbs come through. So, what are we
2:10
going to be planting? So, what we're
2:11
going to do, we're going to put them all
2:12
the way down the center of this bed so
2:15
that it adds some nice color. And yeah,
2:17
I think overall they'll look pretty good
2:20
once they're all established and get
2:21
growing and hopefully add lots of nice
2:24
color into this flower bed. So, let's
2:26
get them all planted. So, that is all
2:29
them planted in this bed. It looks
2:31
absolutely tons better with the flowers
2:33
and obviously as more and more buds come
2:35
out, they'll look even better. So, I
2:37
can't wait to see what this looks like
2:39
in a few months time. It's going to look
2:41
absolutely stunning. So cichlmen are
2:45
fantastic to add to the garden in autumn
2:48
winter time along with your pansies,
2:49
your violas. It adds a lot of color,
2:52
especially when there's a lot of bare
2:53
soil around. It'll brighten it up. So
2:55
they're perfect for pots, for hanging
2:57
baskets, for tubs, and in your borders
3:00
as well for adding some color. And like
3:02
I said, keep deadheading them on a
3:04
regular basis. And they'll keep
3:06
flowering all the way through. And
3:08
during the end, they'll start to wither
3:11
away and lose the leaves and everything
3:13
like that, but that doesn't necessarily
3:15
mean that they're dead. They're just
3:16
dormant and they'll come back again next
3:19
year and hopefully keep providing them
3:21
flowers in your garden. So, let me know
3:23
if you've tried growing cichlmens before
3:26
and if you've got any in your garden
3:27
because they are so attractive plants
3:29
and great to add color to the garden.
3:32
So, make sure that you keep listening to
3:34
the podcasts as well. We're putting new
3:36

3:41
with Ben and she will play it. So until
3:44
